I would think twice before tiling over existing floor tile. It's going to affect your doorway/entrance, the height of the toilet, the bottom edge of your wall tile and the baseboard heater.
Since the room is so small, it shouldn't take long to tear out the old floor. Not sure if you want to tackle it though!

Definitely keep the wall tile. You're lucky it's such a neutral color.

Talk to more shower door suppliers since one store doesn't carry everything that's available. We installed a semi-frameless unit on DS's shower. What made it semi was the fact the unit used a metal strip to connect the unit to the wall. The rest was frameless.

Re: the edging around base of the shower......that can be easily painted.

Do you really dislike the floor? I'd be inclined to keep it, along with the wall tile. Nice crisp white porcelain, and then coordinating wood cabinets and towel rods, perhaps, with a masculine paint color would look great.

I'd rip out the old tile floor and lay down a heated mat and tile over with much larger tiles. Then install a pedestal sink. Take out that cabinet above the toilet, it looks really dated. Replace with a medicine chest, recessed or not. A medicine chest will probably be able to store all the things the cabinet was storing.

Honestly, it looks pretty good. I would give him a "man toilet" - raised and elongated - and a new sink with storage below and inset mirrored medicine cabinet above. Remove the oak storage unit. Paint the walls. And then stop.

Before you get an elongated toilet, make sure there's enough clearance between the sink and the toilet for a guy to to guy stuff.

You also probably would have to keep a vanity cabinet no deeper than 18", should you want to go that route. However, I think that a cabinet will make the room look too closed in.

He wants masculine, but what colors does he like? Since this is primarily his bath, I would want to know that first of all.

I could see navy in here, or for more fun and drama, animal prints or tweeds or plaids mixed with black. Rusty red walls could be nice, too.

No cabinet because of the baseboard heat(and could that be painted to match the tile?), at least from what I can tell. Do a pedestal sink with the wide areas on either side of the sink that allow you to actually set down items as you use the sink.

I like the floor, but at least on my monitor it reads with a definite pink undertone. I would be inclined to take it out and replace it with the ceramic or porcelain tile that looks like wood.

If you were to paint the grout to pick up whatever colour or accessories you put in, it might perk things up quite a bit. Red, navy, green? Sometimes dyed grout is the best way to get colour in, but on a non-wet surface, grout paint should last quite well.

les917: you are right, I don't think I can do a cabinet under the sink due to the baseboard heating element. Didn't think of that before (duh). I'm thinking a pedestal sink something like the one below. As for colors, he likes browns. A mirror and matching cabinet above the toilet in an espresso finish might look good with the tile, and then a paint color in between those two. What about the trim on the window? White, or the same color as the mirror? As for the floor, what is the thinking regarding the size of the floor tile in a small room. Do you do a larger tile to make a small room look bigger?

Is the door into the room opposite the window? Does the door swing into the room, onto the wall opposite the toilet?

It looks like there is available wall space to left of sink - is there any available wall space on the wall opposite the window, or is it all shower and door?

Yes, the door into the room is opposite the window and it swings out of the room. There is a little space to the left of the sink, but probably not enough for a storage cabinet. There is no space at all on the wall opposite the window. Below is one possibility for above the sink. This is a bigger mirror than I have now, but it is a wall mounted unit, so that would be OK for size. (It wouldn't matter that the current inset space is smaller.) Let me know what you think.

You asked if larger tile makes a small room look bigger. I don't think so. I have identical small baths. One is a recent complete renovation and the other is the original 1963 build. When I first moved in 10 years ago I hated the small 60's tile and tried to camouflage it, which did not work. I decided to work with it. I now think it's OK (and with marble-like formica vanity top) and can live with it. The other bath has large tile. The baths are small either way!

Andee: love your new floor tile. I think I would like to do something similar, but perhaps on a diagonal. It makes such a difference compared to the other bathroom! Can't decide what color to do the floor, though. Am leaning towards darker to connect to the espresso color I'd like for the mirror and cabinet.

One more question: is it a big deal to cut a larger hole to accommodate a larger medicine cabinet? The one I like from Restoration Hardware is bigger than the cabinet I currently have. I would have to ask my carpenter or tile guy to cut a larger recessed opening to accommodate it.

I think larger tile does make a small space look larger, and large floor tile laid on the diagonal helps a lot. I think a lighter color floor will appear larger than a darker color.

Usually, slightly enlarging the hold for medicine cabinet is minor, but there's always the possibility of bumping into electrical wiring or pipes.

I'm assuming your current sink is 24-in wide. But it looks like there may be a few inches between it and the wall, so perhaps you could go as wide as 27-in to 30-in on the vanity. Those few extra inches can really make a difference for soap dish, etc. A contemporary, wall mounted sink would also be an option. OTOH, I like the pedestal sink that you chose, it's a great price, and it's a change from the wall mount sink there now.

I love the idea of the diagonal tile on the floor. Consider doing two tones, one the color of the wall tile, and one in the white as the fixtures are. It is a great look and will enlarge the feel of the space. I have two tones (almond and a medium tan)laid on the diagonal in the kitchen, and still love it every time I see it.

I would trim the window in the white, to compliment the fixtures. I would do the walls in a deep chocolate brown, in the same undertone as the tile . It will be crisp and effective with all the white fixtures and trim. I would do the medicine chest and cabinet over the toilet in white as well.

A green plant or two would break up all the brown. If he were willing, you could do a medium blue towel and rug instead of the brown/beige, which would still be very nice with the white fixtures and chocolate and beige walls.

Quite a delay from my previous posting, but what do you all think of this sink and cabinet from Ikea? I'd do a 12 inch tile on the floor, laid on a diagonal, possibly as les917 suggested with two tones, or just with a dark color to coordinate with the walls. I'm thinking chocolate brown on the walls, white trim, white toilet. With the storage under the sink I don't need a medicine cabinet above the sink. I could do a dark wood framed mirror or possibly a mirror going across the entire wall? I'd replace the wood cabinet above the toilet with cabinet that matches the dark wood of the mirror. Semi-frameless shower doors as well. Comments?

I LOVE the tan tile on the floor and the walls. I'd just decorate it.....as in paint, maybe wallpaper, window coverings, new towels. How about black as an accent color? That's masculine!
