Where to buy quality rugs in DC area

We are relatively new to the DC area and don't have reliable sources for local shopping. We recently bought Stickley dining room furniture and need a new rug to tie together certain colors (e.g., chair upholstery, tile on bar). Right now I'm not looking for advice on the rug choice (colors, style) so much as reliable dealers. I've always been uncertain when buying rugs and not sure how to differentiate truth from fiction. I want to be able to trust the store where I'm shopping.

Not comfortable with the idea of buying a rug online. I want to see it in person, and some stores let you take rugs home and try them. Although price is a factor, it is not as important to me as getting what I pay for and knowing I can trust the dealer.

Can anyone recommend local dealers in the DC area? Not sure exactly what style we want, but patterned and nothing too modern.

If you find yourself in N.Va., you might want to check out Bakersfield Rugs on Leesburg Pike in Falls Church (the Baileys Crossroads part).

That is exactly what I was going to suggest! We have bought several rugs there. They have lots of styles and price ranges. I discovered Bakersfield because I taught nearby. They have been there for many years, so definitely not a fly-by-night place and we have always found them to be friendly and helpful.

The only place I think I have seen them is at my local feed store, never saw them while living in the burbs. If you are in a more rural area maybe that is a direction to explore?

Thanks for the reminder heyruthie7, I always go to Behnke's or Homestead. I guess I was hoping there were other decent sources. I tried a few nurseries this weekend and of course Behnke's was the only one with a decent selection of gladiolas. Came back from there with a couple more bags of bulbs.

Modern furniture, DC area?

We have done a ton of attempted research into brands, but the attempts get us nowhere with modern/contemporary furniture. There are too many brands with different names and no real communal information on them. For instance, here is a local place and item: http://www.zfurniture.com/mabelese.html What appears to be the exact same couch can be found under a few different brand names online. Prices vary from 1.9-5k. No reviews, or reviews like "just received, it is great" but nothing else interesting. As for the brands suggested, we haven't found anything by natuzzi that we liked unfortunately, nor did their inventory in the local shops appear to be modern/contemporary. I can look for the other ones. What about where to buy? I don't want to spend thousands without actually seeing something, nor do I want to spend through the nose. Any suggestions for those specific (or other liked) brands in the DC area?

Cyn....do you know if they have matching rugs and runners? I have ordered some sets online but don't like them in person and sending them back gets expensive! Also, do they carry wall to wall....I may go that route and just have them bound.

They may. I don't usually buy sets. My rugs on the main floor share some colors and blend from room to room and in the hallway(runner), but they don't match exactly in pattern. They should certainly be able to find ones that will go together and they may even have sets. Doesn't hurt to ask. :). Good luck.

The store is at one end (not attached) of the strip mall. If you are familiar with the restaurant The Peking Gourmet Inn (sort of a well-known spot), it is across the street from that strip of shops (maybe a tad further west, but only by a matter of yards).

OMG...Peking Gourmet Inn is still there? I lived in S. Arlington on Columbia Pike in the late 70's and it was a big deal when Carter ate there! Is Joe Theismann's still there...haha!

I have a small foyer and not sure if it will look right to have two different rugs, hence the matchy matchy. Thanks again!

Yep, still there. Joe T's..no. Where are you now, Joanie? You would not recognize a lot of the area. Columbia Pike is going to get a trolley! At least, I think it was approved!

We have a sort of open living/dining/foyer with a central fireplace separating LR and DR (1960 house). Our rugs are visible to each other (including the hall runner) from several vantage points. I like having the variation, but I did chose rugs with similar colorways. DH picked the dining room rug which doesn't work quite as well as the runner with the LR rug, but it is okay.
