I swear, we just NEVER have good stuff on CL! Aside from that cute little cottagey chair and ottoman that I drooled over yesterday, there's just the most awful assortment of junk! Like this beauty. Looks like something my cat peed to death. And the dirty sneaker's a terrific touch too ... Forgive me if I sound snarky and petty, but dang it! Where's the good stuff that so many of you guys find on your CL!

Auntjen, I so agree most of the time where I live too (also loved that cottagey chair and ottoman), truly most of it looks like expensive, stained 'stuff'. Today there was a recliner in grey with huge stains in three places and they wanted I think $100 and said, "you could clean it and there was a tear in the back but you could probably mead it & it wouldn't show". I wouldn't have spent $35 on it let alone $100. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking? Don't get me wrong there are bargains to be found but less than more of the time. I will say one thing about CL, I did find a good cleaning gal a few wks. back and she's working out fine and $10/hr. plus I do give her extra for gas although she didn't ask for it. I look at CL every day! Happy hunting.

Jay, I am married to a former Pennsylvanian and he still has relatives there who garden and every summer I envy their cool temperatures (you know, they think 85 degrees is hot) and their usually abundant rainfall. When we go there to visit in summertime, everything is so lush and lovely that it blows my mind, especially compared to how roasting hot and tired everything looks in this part of the country at the same time. On the other hand, Late Blight seems to be on a tear there the last few years, so their beaufiful crops can fail suddenly. Marcy, That's a great list from the Kerr Center. Thanks for linking it. Susan, I think each of us adds/drops varieties for many reasons. After growing tomatoes for 25 years on my own and for at least 15 years with my dad prior to that, I'm just through with the massive experimentation. The truth is that out of every 20 or 25 new (to me) varieties that I try, maybe one or two is worth putting into the permanent growing rotation. So, rather than constantly looking for something new, I'm trying to refine the grow list and weed out those that perform least well in a broad range of conditions. I've reached the conclusion that there really aren't many, or maybe not any, incredible undiscovered varieties out there that taste/perform significantly better than what I've already tried....so I've stopped looking. I had high hopes for the Brandymaster series, likely because it is so tempting to believe there could be anything that could match Brandywine's flavor. They've performed so poorly here that I doubt I'd see a better performance next year or the year after. While many of you may be seeing significantly hotter or drier weather this year than in your average year, for us here in southcentral OK, our rainfall has been exactly 'average' for the year to date and so have our temperatures. If anything we've had slightly lower temperatures, in general, in Love County than we usually have although higher than average heat indices. So, for me, this is a pretty typical year except the real heat arrived in mid-May instead of late June so we got hot earlier, but not necessarily hotter than average...just earlier than average. A tomato variety that didn't perform well in what was a fairly typical year here at our place this year likely wouldn't perform any differently next year. In Oklahoma we have a wide range of average annual rainfall....some folks may average 15" of rainfall per year in western OK while others in eastern OK may average 50-60" or more. Humidity varies widely as does soil type and pH. So, what grows well for someone in highly alkaline soil and water in western OK may not grow nearly as well for someone in eastern OK with entirely different weather and soil. I enjoy looking at everybody's lists and hearing how different tomatoes perform for different people but I know that works well in areas drastically different from mine may not work well here. Growing in containers is much more complicated. First of all, nothing that I grow performs as well in containers as in the ground. Heat and pests hit container-grown plants much harder every year than those in the ground. The grasshoppers have completely stripped my container tomatoes of every leaf and fruit, but have only done sporadic damage to in-ground plants. It is the same thing with spider mites....only the container plants have had issues with them this summer. For me, container-grown tomatoes are great from Jan. or Feb. through the end of June or early July. After that, I might as well yank out those plants and toss them on the compost pile because they're toast. Last year, the tomatoes in containers did somewhat better than they usually do....but we had much higher than average rainfall and much more rain/clouds/cool weather than we see in an average summer. I'm looking for plants that perform best in the worst of conditions, not the best ones, because more often than not, we get the worst conditions every July and August. In containers, I plant tomatoes that can tolerate the heat and the restriction of their root growth and still perform. That means I often grow tomatoes in containers that I don't consider 'good enough' to plant into the ground....stuff like Better Bush and Husky Red Cherry. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm just at the point that I want what produces best for us here, and I don't want to keep looking for something 'better' because I don't think there is anything out there that's really that much better than our tried and true varieties that make our grow list most years. For a long time, I gardened for fun....trying any and every thing that interested me. We ate all we wanted fresh and gave tons away and didn't care if we put up much for the non-gardening season or not. In recent years, though, I've developed a deeper appreciation for the truly superior flavor of anything/everything that's grown locally and picked/prepared/preserved at its peak of perfection. Thus, I give away little and try to raise as much of our annual food supply as possible. In a good year I fill up three freezers, a root cellar and manage to can 2 or 3 or 4 hundred jars of 'stuff'. Since that is what is important to me now, I want plants that produce well, that provide tasty food we like and that are not prima donnas requiring a lot of pampering. Thus, I'm less inclined to experiment and more inclined to plant what produces really well with little fuss. In a lot of ways, the 'experimentation years' were a lot more fun, but the farm-garden-preserving years have been much more productive. Now my family is spoiled and I must produce as much home-grown food as possible because they don't like grocery store stuff as much as they used to. Even DS's firestation co-workers prefer fresh, home-grown and I'm going to try to plant a lot more for them next year so I can send them all the tomatoes, peppers and other yuummy things they're craving. There just isn't room, or enough improved soil, to experiment with varieties now as there used to be. I don't mind that, really, because as long as what I'm growing is producing well, I've gotten over thinking there are incredible varieties out there just waiting for me to find them. Megan, Black Plum grew very well for me for a long time and then for 2 or 3 years it didn't and I dropped it. It is odd how that happens....and I loved Coyote too. If my garden were twice as large as it is, I'd bring it back to the grow list. So many varieties, so little time (and improved soil). Walkin- I am in central NM. The consignment shop, I believe, was called Furniture on Consignment. It is off of I-25 in Albuquerque. You could call and see if they have any bunks and ask to have them forward you pictures to gauge if you like them. If you decide to make a trip to Albq, places to check would be: 1. American Home. I think that this is the largest furniture dealer in NM (not saying much but they have a large kids section). 2. Unpainted Furniture - I haven't been there in a while but there prices are reasonable. 3. Simply Stickley - Stickley is pretty good quality and thus not cheap but they just opened a showroom in Albq. I think that I saw bunks on their site under Stickley Starters. 4. Amish Connection - Once I saw bunks in their showroom. I don't remember seeing them there recently but they also have catalogs and they may have different wood options if you desire that. As far as making the bed, I make 9 yo DS change his own sheets on the top bunk. I think I have seen him crawling under the mattress flipped up to do it, but I just look the other way. Since the bottom bunk is perpendicular, it is on casters and I just pull it out to change the sheets for the 3yo. HTH

A long time ago, someone on here posted a general rule for CL items that I've discovered works over and over again. List the item for 25% of what you paid, and negotiate from there based on demand. So, here, let's assume the chair went for about $1800. 25% would be $450. Then it would probably be negotiated to $350 -which is exactly what a few people have suggested. See, it works again! So I too, would offer about $350.

Update: the dresser/buffet was finally sold tonight! (a/k/a chest, credenza, flat screen TV stand, LOL!) Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate the time people took to be of assistance. I learned a lot, and will save these ideas for the future. Thanks especially to dilly_dally for her many good ideas. It really helped. It took almost 3 weeks to sell the dresser. Im not sure if thats typical or not. It sold after I re-titled it as a campaign chest. (Yes!) From my first to third posting I lowered the price from $425 to $275. But I was happy with what I got in the end. I had overpriced it originally figuring I would be bargained down. With both that and the table that sold a little faster, they paid the reduced price listed in the second (or third) ad and did not ask for a further reduction. Each was sold to the one and only person who came to look at it. Not sure if thats typical either. I had sent pictures to the local consignment shop as a backup, she said she would price it at $450, but I would have gotten half of that, and would have had to pay $50 to have it moved there. I sold the dresser/buffet just in time; I have just enough time to get the carpets shampooed before I go Saturday to pick up the CL dining room set that I paid a deposit on in December! I couldnt see bringing that in until I moved out my old stuff. Thanks again!

Excuse me but I am not interested in an item with a stock photo from the internet. I want to see the real thing, especially when a minor repair is needed. Good grief!

The worst here in N.O. is when the college kids are leaving to go back home and they start selling those sofa's and chairs that have been on the porches of their capa betta whatever house!! OMG, I can't imagine walking by one, let alone sitting on one. They describe them as "sweet". Oh yea, right!

That is disgusting. My CL is usually pretty good, though I will tell you last week I experienced a bait and switch. The ad posted a pretty little Queen Anne style foot stool. When I went to the house, the seller show my three others, but not the one in the pic. When I questioned her, she said her son posted the ad and she had no idea what pic he'd posted. So on the upside, at least the pic is accurate, if nothing else.

Even if the photo looks good, I'm suspicious - stained, bug infested or whatever. I keep thinking about the hotel room investigations where they take the blacklight and shine them on comforters and chairs and they nearly always come up with some yucky stuff. No...can't go there.

It ruins secondhand shopping for me, but there you are.

A lot of stuff skeeves me too. There are actually some pretty good things on the CL around here (and I have 2-3 areas to look at that are pretty close) I think if I could get past the skeeve factor of soft goods in someone else's house I would be able to get a bunch of things (not sure I need them though ;), but it would help me on my way to change my style.

But then the pricing is just not right....

Now, I know that lots of you have had great finds on chairs, sofas, etc, but personally? The thought of buying someone's used upholstery (or bedding *shudder*) just totally squicks me out. =8-O

Case goods are another story. I wish I had a huge house for some of the great pieces I've seen listed!

I agree, Auntjen! Why doesn't the DFW CL have any good stuff? I love seeing all the wonderfull things others have found. But when I go browsing, I see nothing. What are people in the DFW area doing with all their unwanted fabulous things? They're certainly not putting them on CL.

I just sold a dining table on CL - my first sale on CL. I was so disgusted with all the scammers and their stories about why they couldn't come pick it up and would have to send a cashier's check! One of them said he was on his honeymoon in Hawaii and wanted to surprise his wife, so his 'driver' would pick it up. I'm sorry, if you can afford a Hawaii honeymoon and have a driver, why are you buying your wife used stuff from CL??? Not to mention, no man should be picking out the furniture without his wife!!! LOL!!

I have only sold one thing on CL and the scammers really do come out to play.

Auntjen, I hear ya. I live in Miami, which because of the transient nature of the population and the relatively short history of the area being inhabited is extremely unlikely to toss up antique/classic furniture or old forgotten treasures from the attic (heck we don't even HAVE attics).

My CL leans extremely heavily to very cheap cardboard furniture and Rooms To Go bedding/upholstered pieces that somebody got when they moved here 2 years ago and is now unloading as they move somewhere else. Interspersed with the occasional Ethan Allen or Bernhardt pieces that somebody bought when they moved here 2 years ago and now wants to sell for the same price minus a hundred bucks or so now that they are moving out...

Wonder if anyone ever has done or could do a study on what kinds of furniture turns up in different regions of the country? I suspect, on no evidence whatsoever, that people in the Northeast-New England area have the best CL pickin', but I'd be interested to know if that is so or not.

I bought some floor cushions on CL here. They were in a very nice home and in great condition and I didn't have any heebie jeebies about buying them even though I wouldn't have bought them at an even cheaper price from a thrift store. I was a little intimidated by going to someone's house alone so dh went with me. He stayed out talking cars with the lady's husband while I went in with the lady. I asked her if she had sold much on CL & she had and said she had never had a problem.

It makes me depressed to look at that stuff. And when I go into a suppose to be antique shop and see crap for big $$$$$ it's insulting. Like the public is too stupid to know the difference between crap and fabulous.

OK, here's my take, probably not too popular, but here goes...

The words "Old", "Shag" and "cream-colored" in the same headline followed by that location all told me EXACTLY what I need to know prior to opening (I never would have).

Call me a snob, but I rarely open anything from that burb and many others I could list that are known to be economically challenged. I've purchased 3 items from CL and all of them came from the burbs north of Dallas, although I have looked at a couple of things as far away as Arlington.

I have found that DFW's CL goes in spurts. Sometimes you can find a bunch of great stuff, other times it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The best stuff around here (antiques and high-end furniture) will be found at auction more than at CL.
