2 area rugs in one room -how to coordinate?

It's a large room, with formal dining area at one end, and a sitting area at the other.

We had a hardwood floor installed today, and I think I need one rug under the table, and one for the seating area.

I like oriental rugs. But I need ideas and thoughts:

-Should they be the same?

-Same colors or contrasting?

-Anything else to think about?

Mine is an "L" shaped living/dining room that flows together. The two rugs do not match, but they don't clash either. It worked out just fine. There is about 6.5' of bare floor between them.

I have 3 rugs in my FR. What I go by is to have a color that is in each rug and keep the rugs close to the same style. One of my rugs is a Safavieh tribal with navy blue center and rusty-red border, the second rug is a karastan type that is mainly rust with 2 tones of blue in the design. The third has beige/brown tones with some rust.

We have a similar situation: Foyer opens to Dr; DR opens to Sun Room. From the front door you can see all three rooms. What I did with the area rugs was transition through proportion of color. We also made sure the rug colors in each room picked up the wall colors from the other rooms. The Foyer (painted Stuart Gold) rug is predominantly red. The DR (painted Confederate Red) rug has quite a bit of black with obvious touches of red, gold, olive and terra cotta. The Sun Room (painted Olive Branch) rug has quite a bit of terra cotta with a black edging and obvious touches of gold, olive and cream. The patterns are somewhat similar but in no way do they look to be part of a "rug family". Does this help?

For now, we ended up having the living room, dining area and hall all one color. There was much disagreement about what color this should actually be. We were aiming for a neutral tan/goldish color. Everything seemed to beige or too yellow. FINALLY, we determined that SW Restrained Gold was the way to go and it is all painted and perfect. My Uncle who is in town painted everything for us as well as touched up trim in the other rooms. Uncle Bob is a professional painter and he thought that using the dining room as accent walls would be a fine idea, however, he is only in town for a week or so. We may look at different colors again when he is back in the sumer. For now though, everything looks really nice.

Glad you like it! It's the Bridgette Printed rug from Pottery Barn and is made from wool and jute - so a nice natural fiber mix. I may be mistaken, but I thought Pottery Barn once offered samples. Take a look. Bridgette Printed Rug

They need not be the same, although they can be. I have two in my L-shaped LR and DR that "go" together. They aren't at all the same, but the colors work well. They were bought years apart. On the other hand, they have some space between them. You will probably need to experiment a lot. I brought home half a dozen rugs to try out for my previous home until I found the right one. And then when I moved here, more try-outs until I found the second one that would go with the first one and in the new home.

In our living room we have red/blue orientals and they coordinate but don't necessarily match. Across the hall in the DR we have one that compliments the others. For me coordinating colors is the key, as I don't like matchy-matchy.
