2 area rugs in one room -how to coordinate?

It's a large room, with formal dining area at one end, and a sitting area at the other.

We had a hardwood floor installed today, and I think I need one rug under the table, and one for the seating area.

I like oriental rugs. But I need ideas and thoughts:

-Should they be the same?

-Same colors or contrasting?

-Anything else to think about?

Mine is an "L" shaped living/dining room that flows together. The two rugs do not match, but they don't clash either. It worked out just fine. There is about 6.5' of bare floor between them.

I have 3 rugs in my FR. What I go by is to have a color that is in each rug and keep the rugs close to the same style. One of my rugs is a Safavieh tribal with navy blue center and rusty-red border, the second rug is a karastan type that is mainly rust with 2 tones of blue in the design. The third has beige/brown tones with some rust.

While it's difficult to say for sure since your pictures don't include the furniture in place nor the rug, my recommendation would be not to divide up the space visually too much with the different paint colors and/or trim. As you say your space is small, having a single unifying color will make your rooms feel more expansive, plus if you need to borrow space from one room for the other, such as seating for a larger group in the dining room, it will be more cohesive. I think grouping the LR furniture around the rug will unify that space. Adding a second rug below the dining room table will help ground that room as well. Once you add decor, paintings, art, etc. it will look lovely. That said, if you have your heart set on having a different paint color, I would think more in terms of an accent wall since the rooms are not competely separate.

Two different Persian rugs could look great, and gives you a more interesting collected look than trying to match them exactly. Choose rugs that have the same colors, but in different proportions for each room. Or, choose rugs that have the same colors but in different patterns. A good rug store can help you choose them both together. I love mixing Oriental, Persian, et al, rugs together … so many choices. But I was wondering what you think of a more casual woven rug, a jute? They need not be the same, although they can be. I have two in my L-shaped LR and DR that "go" together. They aren't at all the same, but the colors work well. They were bought years apart. On the other hand, they have some space between them. You will probably need to experiment a lot. I brought home half a dozen rugs to try out for my previous home until I found the right one. And then when I moved here, more try-outs until I found the second one that would go with the first one and in the new home.

In our living room we have red/blue orientals and they coordinate but don't necessarily match. Across the hall in the DR we have one that compliments the others. For me coordinating colors is the key, as I don't like matchy-matchy.
