Country Cottage Style

I love this style. While English country cottage is probably my favorite, I enjoy bringing a few details that give it a little French or Italian accent. Always fun to add wrought iron and punches of yellow and blue.

This kitchen looks very English country cottage to me. I think it's the beams (and the Aga, of course) but also the cabinetry. I'd be very happy with this kind of kitchen :)

That's a clean, cozy kitchen. I've seen in recent decor mags, that Aga has a purple stove. Oh, be still my heart. lol I would love to have one.

I, too love cottage decor. I lean toward a southern France or Tuscany cottage look. I like to pretend I live on a little stone cottage in the middle of a vineyard in Tuscany. I'm slowly shifting all my decor toward that end.

One of the things I love about cottage is painted furniture. Lately, I've been obsessed with painted wood. lol My husband is not a painted wood fella. Sigh.

I love beach cottage decor, too. Even though I live a land-locked life.

No photos at the moment for you and no time to look...I'm supposed to be finishing a brochure for a deadline tomorrow. ;0)

Oh, that's a gorgeous kitchen! If you're looking for more images, you can go to Google, click on Images, and type in Cottage Style or whatever similar terms you might think of. You should get millions of photos to look at. Hope you're feeling better soon!

just_me_6: Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread with my gardening project. As for your siding color for your garden with blues and purples, a soft yellow or creamy white would give you backlighting for those colors to be visible. Some pinks might not go well with a yellow (although I break that rule), and you can use greenery behind the pink if that's an issue. A yellow or white will draw more attention to your house, but those colors work well with country cottage gardens. As you can see from my photos, we built in the back of a 2 acre meadow that has mature woods on 2 sides. We chose the grey/sage/cream to let the lines of the house show up without distracting from the surrounding natural areas. I had considered using a deep brown on the siding, but with our southern exposure on the front, I was concerned about paint fading (we are passive solar). I mentioned having used these same colors twice, so here are the exact colors on my previous house, which was a craftsman-influenced design set in a wooded area with minimal lawn. The only color difference here is that we used a deep charcoal on the window sashes of the true divided lights.

i don't think putting a trellis on porch would work well because the porch itself is at least three and a half feet off the ground level. So whatever we put on the trellis would have to grow almost four feet tall to even be at the bottom of the trellis, and that would do nothing to block our view. Also, anything that climbs is not going to be evergreen and that means we would have this same privacy issue again in the winter when the plants dies back. That's why I wanted an evergreen, large, fast growing shrub. Maybe I could hang a hanging basket of a sun loving fern above that to fill in until the shrub gets taller.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I do like the idea of using ticking stripes; but the room already has a stripe in the lampshade, which is right next to the window. If I get the striped curtains, I'll probably change the shade. I will definitely order some sample fabrics from Country Curtains. I'm still drawn to their toile curtains, even though I don't want an entire room of toile. This is sort of how I envisioned the toile fabric working with the red floral pillows. (Thanks for the link to the toile rooms. That's where I found this picture.)

I'd start with finding pulls that you love, for these closets, maybe new or maybe vintage ones(there are plenty very interesting ones on Etsy, someties being sold in bulk or sets too), and switch the plain white one for the ones you find. (just make sure it's same size as not to drill the holes etc. If it's standard you'll have no problem. It will a) instantly change the look b) give you a lot of clues about what you love and what else you'd like to see in the room and it can be a really cheap change as well before you start repainting etc I agree that throws and pillows will make a huge difference, toward your preffered style, in an instant. So would be very close to changing hardware, on my list..you can look for them simultaneously..:) also nothing wrong in buying art you love the moment you see it, if affordable of course. Shouldn't be tied to whether your rooms are finished or empty or half the way. If you see it-buy it. Will inform you a lot as well.

Thank you both for the responses. A purple stove...wow, that would be cool! I love that Tuscany/southern France look, too. I seem to be heading in that direction in my garden, as well, with lots of lavender, sunflowers, roses, daisies, salvias and herbs. Although I do love my blueberries and butterfly bushes :)

That you for the ideas, I think I might spend some time looking for more photos...and that purple Aga.

Methinks a few Aga Saga novels would be good for you to tuck up with along with a cup of tea, (in a proper English teacup) or chamomile in a mustard yellow burgundian clay mug?

I love country cottage style and I am seriously thinking of painting my cherry bedroom furniture (4 poster bed)white. Haven't decided yet if I should sand the edges to have the vintage look. There is a local store that is full of this type furniture and all of their furniture is painted white (no sanded edges). Has anyone painted their furniture white and what color white did you use, also type of paint.
