Hanging Curtain Rods and Curtains with Clips

I finally found some drapes and rods for my den. We've always just had shears because one whole wall is French Doors. One the other wall is 2 windows. I bought really long drapes (and shears) and had my husband hang them really high, which he thought I was crazy. That wall turned out Fab and especially with the 2 wood and wrought iron shutter door things. Now, I want to do same thing to wall with French doors, but my husband is saying we'd have curtains right over the door we use. Since they are on clips (and you move them around easily anywhere) I think it would look better at same height and I can always move them away from the door. Would do you think? Wouldn't it look strange having them at different hts?

For me, it would depend on how often you use the doors. If it's often then I wouldn't do it...if the drapes aren't pulled back all the way, they can get ripped by or caught in the doors. Better to mount a window treatment to the door directly...

Not 100% understanding your question. Is it one set of doors on the one wall or is it wall to wall doors? If it's just one set, then as long as you have room on the sides to stack them out of the way, you'll be OK.
Not understanding where your husband wants to hang them, but yes, they'd look better hung at the same heights, if possible.
The only problem I can see, is with the clip ons. If you're going to be opening closing them all the time, the panels are going to pulling off the clips all the time.

Thanks Kathi, I think I figured it out. You wouldn't think it could be so difficult! I tried it your way a couple of times myself but I ended up with 9 rings and you need an even number for them to hang evenly with the ends toward the back (I think). I put rings on the ends 2 inches in. Then divided the remaining space by 9 and somehow ended up with 10 perfectly spaced rings! Go figure. Now I need to buy more rings because for some reason they put 7 in a package when most people will need at least 8. Maybe more sane people don't stress over the even number requirement. Can I hang sheers behind drapes without a double curtain rod?

There is another wqy to add sheers behind your drapes and much less expensive than the 'Add a Rod' idea as well as less cumbersome than the bungee idea, depending on the type of rod you use for the drapes. IF you use a standard type curtain rod, there is a solid 'u' shaped hook you can insert into the bottom fold of the of the rod while inserting a regular cafe type rod into it to hold the sheers. They can be found at big box stores and often at drapery stores. lollll But I can't find it on the Internet drapery ads. Mucho inexpensive, mucho easy, and your sheers will definitely be behind your drapes as far as you want.

@Jan Moyer We are building a guest house with 10’ ceilings and i am planning to install outside mount woven shades and sheers as in your mockup photo. I have 2 more days to do any additional blocking for shades and curtain rods. see photo i planned to hang rods about 9” from ceiling in case we later add crown moulding Question 1: is this height ok? 2. Is this enough blocking? or need more? 3. For nearby kitchen and mudroom windows, should they also be outside mounted to provide the most light ? or since they wont have sheers, should they be inside mounted? thanks!

It can be anywhere from 2" above the trim to the ceiling. It's preference, but I like it about halfway. Will the curtains be custom or readymade? If custom, mount the rod before you measure for curtains. If readymade, the length of the curtains may dictate where the rod needs to go. You don't want them more than 1/2" from the floor, preferably 1/4". Curtains should not reveal the side trim and in fact should be at least an inch into the glass, otherwise they look like wall panels rather than window curtains IMO. I know some may like this look but I find it odd looking.

I'm not really sure I understand, either. All the same height would look best. Just make sure you have plenty of room for them to stack back on the sides, and you won't have an issue with them getting caught in the doors.

Or are the sheers the question? I wouldn't want sheers over a door that was used often, unless you planned to leave them open all day.

It is 8 French Doors that actually one open on each end. I was going to use the drapes on each end and shears all in middle. You can move the drapes very easily and I pull them back from windows every day. No problem. So, I thought that I could do the same where the door we use often (on side of house and have electronic gate. So, only my husband I only one's that use it. I found a picture (wish I knew how to show it) Where it's exactly what I was thinking about. It would be drape on each end where doors open, but we rarely use but one door and I could pull it back each day or even leave it pulled away from door we use.Looks fine that way.. I don't even use it that much since garage connects to back of house off kitchen. I do think they would look much better hanging same length. The one wall we did ended up costing 650, but I told him drapes and rods are "an investment." You plan on using them for long, long time!
