New light fixture needs wire rated at higher temp

Hi,

All of my new light fixtures need a temperature rated supply wire that was not used in my 50 year old house. Is the temperature rating needed to withstand the heat that the light fixture itself gives off (from the lightbulbs) or is it needed due to the heat generated in the wire itself due to conducting electricity through it? If the latter, why would that have changed over time? If the former, then I assume that I wouldn't need the entire run to be new wire, but only the part that directly feeds the fixture (from the junction box to the fixture only). Thank you.
