Our ceiling fan (one of the few things we kept from the old kitchen) is an original-style Hunter fan with a black motor housing and medium-tone wood blades. Our appliances are stainless, sink is stainless, faucet and hardware are brushed nickel. But we do have some other black elements (soapstone counters and a steel counter and bookshelf uprights, as well as a couple of steel and glass pendants) that connect with the ceiling fan. I was worried about leaving the fan, since we have three other pendants in the space. But to me it just disappears; I have no idea how others react to it (and unfortunately I don't have any pictures that show it).

We've had ceiling fans in 2 houses, one with 7'8" and another with 7'6". My husband is 6'4" and he has no problem with them hanging over his head. One was over a dining table, I have one over the island in my kitchen, and a small one is in my son's room. They all have hanging lights. I confess I don't care for the look of the lights on them, but we have no AC and they certainly help keep our rooms more comfortable in hot or muggy weather. Of course, S.Carolina gets a lot hotter than Maine.

pozj, I have a TG fir ceiling, ipe on all other areas, with a ceiling fan installed. As you can tell from the photo, I am still in the construction phase. The answer to this one is quite subjective, so everyone will have their own opinion. Blending with the ceiling is less risky and will make the fan less obtrusive in the room. Blending with the floor may make more of a design statement. But if you are really creative with your design and willing to take a little more risk to make a statement, you might decide that the fan does not need to match the ceiling or the floor, but blend in with the room decor.
