For the New Year...

I come at this forum for a bit different perspective. It is a great source of information and comfort for many people, granted. But, and it's a big BUT, I get discouraged with it because most of the posting on here is about "how can "I" get this" or "how come the ex is doing this to "ME?"

If you scan down the posts, you see this a lot. I understand stepparenting is difficult. I understand that stepparenting is thankless. I understand that stepparenting is costly on a personal and financial level--don't get me wrong. BUT, and this not directed and any one person in particular, stepparenting is not about YOU or I. Stepparenting is about these children.

I would love to do premarital classes for those considering marriage to someone who already has children. That's when it starts.

I WISH that more people would take the time to consider things from the children's perspective (and I'm not talking about adult children, here. That's different). I wish that more people realized that when they marry someone with children it is required of you to get along, to smile nicely, to act with consideration, to be the better person ALL of the time...not just some of it. And if you CANNOT do that, then you should not marry this person.

I realize that biological parents can cause problems for a multitude of reasons, BUT we are just stepparents. We cannot affect change ourselves. As unfortunate as that is (because I know that there are a lot of very GOOD stepparents out there), it is our lot.

I don't address the issue of blended families because I have no practical experience there. I came into this marriage childless and my husband and I made the decision to not have any of our own. The older I get, the WISER I realize that decision was. I wish people who are considering marrying someone with children thought about that more.

So anyway, that's just my rant for the New Year. I'm putting on my flame retardant suit just in case, but I really meant for it to be commentary, not criticism. But alas, I realize that someone somewhere will probably take offense and I'm sorry for that.
