I would go ahead and let her do it....that's JMO. I think 12 is a hard age, anyway, and if she's getting teased about these things...it's an easily corrected problem, so why not?

I don't know if this would be an option for you but lasering requires only a few treatments (particularly for a small area like a unibrow) and is permanent. It would probably be a lot less expensive than waxing over the course of the next few years! Maybe a good birthday or Christmas present?

I think 12 is old enough to start 'cleaning up' around the eyebrows. When my daughter was younger, about 14, she started getting her eyebrows waxed, but the thing I did not allow was for them to be shaped. They can wax stray hairs under the brow (above the lid) and between the brows, but not create an arch or make them thinner. I told her she had to be older to get them shaped and thinned out. In my opinion, it makes younger girls look too much older.

I agree with the other ladies....I would get it done for her. Being teased about body issues is terribly difficult, especially when they are tweens and early teens. SD10 and I are talking about the "shaving the legs" issue at our house. Some girls in her class already do. She is fare haired so we can wait a little longer. They have so many issues and changes going on...bless their little hearts.

SD is just now getting into waxing, as are a couple of her friends and she's 13 - 8th grade. I know I didn't do it at her age, but I think I was tweezing. I'm with Ima - no sexy shaping, but clean up is okay. I take her in with me - it's kind of fun. :-)

Thanks girls! My dh and I were thinking it might be a good idea to let her get her eyebrows waxed so she will not get teased. Just a clean-up, I agree that thinning or shaping at her age is too much! For lip hair would you recommend waxing or lightening? She does not have a lot of hair on her lip, but it is just dark.

I think waxing a unibrow at 12 is OK....Bikini line,not so much. LOL. Since it's just an eyebrow I don't think it's a huge deal.

I'm sure she's self-conscious about it. 12 is a tuff age.

The children's salon I take my kids to does waxing. She said there's no age requirement. Once I was in there and a 9 yo was getting an eyebrow wax.

Personally, I would pluck her. A few years back I got an eyebrow wax and the lady accidentally took off half of one of my eyebrows...it never grew back right!!

Also, be glad she asked. My cousin's 11 yo just took a razor and shaved in between hers...yuck!!

I'm with Ima et al on the waxing... You don't even have to take her to get it done if you don't want - a little drugstore kit would be fine for a small area like that.

But I'd say just cream bleach the lip for now... After her hormones mature a little more, she may lose the lip hair (or she may get more - who's to say...) but I don't think I'd mess with the root system just yet.

I agree that she should have the option to remove the hair by whatever method is affordable and relatively painless. But I don't think YET that permanent removal (i.e. laser) is the way to go. This is because I think this would be a really good opportunity to simultaneously work on her self-esteem and broaden her beauty standards, and to say "I understand you don't want to be teased now while you're a kid and you have a bunch of immature kids around you who don't know any better. But one day you might decide you want to keep more of that hair because many people consider it beautiful." You can show her pictures of Frida Kahlo, Brooke Shields in her youth, Madonna in her thick-eyebrow phase, and tell her that all these women are considered very beautiful and distinctive. But certainly for now, the girl should have the choice to do something so she won't be teased.
