Two more turtles WIP

They aren't cleaned up yet...just did the 'ocean floor' tonight but they're almost done. DH helped! He put on the thinset and I squished in the "stuff." Makes me happy that he likes the turtles and wanted to help.

The first one is for his son and our daughter-in-law who are HUGE U of FL gator fans. I have a small plastic gator to glue on tomorrow. The gator will be crawling up onto the turtle's back.

The next turtle is for my daughter and son-in-law in TX. (They are here with my darling little Gdaughter.. but I have a nasty cold so haven't spent much time with them yet.) SIL is a big TX longhorn fan so the turtle has a silver T on it's back but that's it. I just couldn't bring myself to make it an orange and white turtle when I thoughts of a darling baby in mind! :)

Enough talk... here they are...

(Oh... and I have to say... DH said "I never would have thought to put the thinset in a plastic bag and pipe it out." I said... "well... I learned it on the mosaic forum!" So... thank you all for that.. and the 100's of other things I'm learning from y'all! :)

I'm working on some vases for gifts, too...hope to grout them tomorrow and will post pics.

I LOVE 3d stuff, it my fav to do so I've been drooling over these turtles since you first showed up with them! What a great gift and it is so neat that DH is not only helping but likes a good idea when he sees it!!lol!

Yes these turned out great also. I'll bet your family will love them!!! I just love the base with all that stuff in it. Its awesome that your hubby helped you!!! Tell him we said he was awesome for it!!!

Box turtles are land tortoises, so they don't migrate to water. Tho they do need it to drink. I keep a shallow dish or two for them. I think they might live to 50 yrs old or more, who knows how old he really is? You can count the ridges of the plates on their shell to tell the age of younger turtles, but I've never found one on our property that has more than 16 ridges and I know some of them are much older than that. Maybe they stop growing at that age. This one is the same size as he was when we first met him. As for putting him in the will, he was doing fine when we first found him and I guess he will do fine on his own when we are gone! Our property and the woods behind us are great turtle habitat. Yes, both are Box Turtles,the lighter one is certainly a boy, and the darker one might be a girl. Sometimes this can cause color variations, but often it is just genetics, sort of like in humans. Sliders (and Cooters, and other water turtles in that family) have much less domed shells, probably for pushing through the water, plus, they can get much larger.

Ladyronnie, Your link is the same place I got my idea from. Course mine is not going to be so wonderful as her's is. I wanted to just do something really simple. I have a second fountain and will get more pipe and do another one for it later on when I feel like getting tedious.I just love what she did. Hoping to get back to work on mine soon as our company leaves.I am so glad you put up the link. I had it on my old computer and lost it. The glass checks are still just sitting on my dresser in the office. The more I look at them sort of uneven the more I am liking the look. Weird I know. I do not think I ewill make myself crazy trying to get each square perfect. Can't wait to work on that too. I need some more purple glass so will have to finish the fountain first and wait for a trip to town. Chris

Thanks guys! More fill it is. I'm gonna try to work on that today...altho, I did have a light bulb moment on a box I want to do and am now excited about that! AADD not a good thing to have if ya wanna get stuff finished, lol! DAISY: I don't know what the glass for the back is called. I just went to my local stained glass lady and said I was looking for something that looked like turtle shell. I ended up with a pretty big piece of it, so guess there are more turtles in my future! ANNIE: Do you have the Taurus? Just watch the DVD and you'll be laughing so hard and no longer afraid of the saw! Seriously, I'm more wary of my grinder than the saw!

Those are the coolest turtles! What a great find, I've never seen any like that, almost lifelike. Beautiful mosaic job and great gifts!

Kate, those are adorable. Love the themed idea on their shell. The next time I go to the concrete place, I'm going to look for these. Now I know what to do with them.

Annie... I found them at KMart...and Sears Essential (which has taken over for some KMart stores here in FL.
They are a hard composite type of material.. quite light before putting all the rocks and stuff on them... found them in the garden department.

Love these turtles! I too adored Slow's rooster standing in all those found objects! the ball chain along the edge of the turtle shell is inspired

I think I first read about ball chain from Linlee... but it may have been from someone else, too. Sure like the edge it gives. I've used it on several things.

Everyone liked their turtles... and each of the three called yesterday to say that they took a better look at it.. and loved finding all of the "stuff" in the sand. So... thanks to everyone here for all of the help and support! Y'all are WONDERFUL teachers!!!

So glad that you will make one to keep for yourself. I really love all that treasure in the sand. I made something similar to that once, but I wasn't as clever as you to add all those trinkets.. but next time I will. Thanks for sharing!

Everyone here is a HUGE inspiration... an amazing group you ALL are. :) We're going camping over the next few days... can't wait to get back to making things! Completely addicted!
