Food at stepgrandmother's house

She lives on stale junk food, and when my nieces kids are there, they have to eat the same. My niece has tried giving the kids food to eat while they are over there, but she tells the kids it's terrible and they end up eating stale Christmas cookie and crackers from the Dollar Store.

Many elderly people on a tight budget shop price not quality. Perhaps when you drop t he kids off, you can also leave some edible goodies and say - Got these on sale on Mom. They are the kids' favorites and I thought you might enjoy them too. My Grandma (I'm just into my 50's) passed away this year. She also treated us with the most disgusting food you can imagine. If she gave you Xmas cookies, you would wonder from which year. Even her tea had a moldy moth ball taste. I would do anything to sit at her table one more time to share a cup of moldy tea and eat some green coffee cake with her. Point is - I'm alive and those memories are some of the sweetest of my life.

SEND GROCERIES WITH THE KIDS WHEN THEY GO VISIT HER. People who don't have kids, don't have cupboards stocked with children in mind.

I just went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago. My SD went to spend the night at my Mom's house. When she woke up my Mom had nothing for breakfast except a couple of chocolate cookies. And lunch consisted of a turkey sandwich served at 4:00 PM. I know it was just because my Mom wasn't thinking enough to go by the grocery store before my SD came over.

My wife was furious. She said "That's not how a grandmother is supposed to act, they're supposed to be baking things in the kitchen and trying to feed you all day long."

Oh well, I guess Betty Crocker has left the building.

Im new to canning and food preservation. So much information..".to trust or not to trust." Yet even though I hear the bottom line is to trust only the approved testing, I find that I still have questions and have a hard time trusting my end product simply because of the possibility of human error. I read that there is a field test similar to a home pregnancy test that they use to detect botulinum in 20 minutes. Has this been made available to the public and if not, why? It's a great business plan if someone can come up with the science behind it. And Ill buy it. Home testing might also make it possible for others to continue testing since the government quit. But while we're waiting for that, I would like for someone to clarify some information. I know botulinum is the bacteria which produce the toxin (gases) that can hurt us. The bacteria die at a certain temp for a certain time. I have heard some people suggest to boil a home-canned product thoroughly after opening/before eating it to kill the bacteria, but this seems insufficient as the toxins would still be present. It is not the live bacteria that are toxic but the gases that they produce. Also the bacteria die when exposed to oxygen. Does boiling somehow neutralize toxins? Or is this just false information? Lastly, since bacteria produce gases, is it safe to conclude that jars tainted with bacteria would definitely have some outward visible signs of contamination? I know that other bacteria can infect food, but in my short studies I have been led to believe that botulinum is the hardest to kill. But do all bacteria produce gases and therefore provide some indication that food isn't safe?

i remember years ago, we visited by stepgrandfather in florida. i was maybe 10?11?. he had these huge banana groves with ripe bananas. he tried to give me one and when i tried to reach for it hed pull it back, after a couple of times he said "look at the monkey reachin for the banana". after a couple of times of him doing it, i walked away. a bit later my mom noticed something wasnt right with me, so i told her about the banana episode. i never saw my mom so mad. she told my dad (step) what had happened. He made the decision at the time, that we were leaving. we loaded up the van and never went back. his mentality was that regardless of blood (or lack of) i WAS his daughter and that he wouldnt allow his father to treat any of the grandkids differently. it takes a strong man to stand up for his family. now as far as the inheritance, dads stepmom (dolly, a wonderful lady) died a couple of years before his dad did. his dad remarried, and we he passed away, he willed everything to his new wife....when SHE passed away, she donated everything (about 100 prime acres in florida) to the local animal shelter. to this day, dad doesnt regret his decision to stand up for us. on the other hand, the girls' mom needs to stand up FOR THEM. in a sense, shes condoning the behaving by allowing it. believe you me, it would take one time, and one time only for someone to toss a present at my child. noone likes a confrontation, but you have to stand up for what you believe in and her subjecting the children to the stepg'mas antics makes me wonder why she allows it. food for thought jen

I don't mean to scare you but you are obligated by law to refer this situation to the proper authorities in your state. Probably the Child Protective Services unit at your local Department of Human Services. If you are aware of abuse and you do nothing then you are an accessory to the abuse. Please for the sake of this child, do not ignore this. At the very least, make her parents aware of what is going on and if they do not put a stop to it then you must take it further. Scars from physical and emotional abuse can last a lifetime. You may be the only person who can, and will, save this little girls life. Please keep us updated. I am very concerned for this child.

No more food at home, yet still new food moths

We live in a 3500 square foot home and have been battling pantry moths since December 2021. Fortunately, the moths have been contained to our mud room which is a room between our attached garage and the rest of the house. We believe the source was birdseed that had been stored in the mud room. (I have no idea why someon put birdseed in that room!) Although we discovered the moths in December, I am pretty confident that they were there for at least a month or longer before we found them. We found moth pupae in the sealed glass Yankee candles! One blessing was that our actual pantry in the kitchen was free of moths, and remains free. Needless to say we still invested in hundreds of dollars of airtight containers to store our food. Now it is May 2022 and we still are finding moths. Not many though- we went over 3 weeks without seeing one. We thought we finally beat them. The two mud room doors remain closed at all times except when entering or exiting through to the garage. We removed most of the cabinets from the mud room when we did the initial clean out. The mud room is almost completely stripped. We contemplated taking off the trim that goes around the doors and the baseboards…. however we haven’t since there is caulk between the trim and the walls… It seems so ridiculous that an insect can be so disruptive…. So we will continue to monitor and kill on site…A couple of weeks ago, we had mulch delivered for the flower beds - to my disgust, the mulch had moths in them. Not the same as the pantry moths, but moths no less. We paid for 11 yards of mulch and the nursery threw in the moths for free, I suspect… I don’t think there is an answer for any of this. I am just sharing my story, to let others know, if you see a moth in your house, be vigilant - don’t ignore them.

When I was small my great great aunt was the same way. She was my dad's great aunt. I can remember going to her house and her forcing yucky chocolate cake and Sunny D on us. Not only did we eat it there, but she insisted on sending some home with us. I also remember cheeseburgers every time too. She was no cook. SHe ate her cheeseburgers with a spoon too. I'll never understand that one. The thing was we were not hurt. She thought it was what we liked. What grandmother is not going to give her grandkids cookies and stuff. The budget thing is probably a factor in it too. A lot of older people are used to buying after holidays thinking that a little stale food is not bad. RosieL is right. The chocolate cake and Sunny D made memories that will stay with me and one day I will share with my kids the stories of their weird Aunt Berthie and how she was so loving.

I second the idea of sending food with the kids. If you don't think it will be accepted easily, have the kids make it themselves to share "what they have made". My MIL is not a step, but was on a limited budget. I often "stopped" by the farmer's market and "picked up a great deal" and shared it. The kids also "packed" treats to share, brought recipes and the ingredients to "cook with her". I was just thinking of ways to get the kids food they liked while visiting (sometimes overnight). I heard later how much my MIL LIKED to have the kids "sharing" with her.

I agree -- send something with the kids. Many of the elderly have fixed incomes, but yet are too proud to take or ask for help. With my own Dad, I do the same thing Susan in NC does -- I frequently bring stuff over under the guise of "it was on sale and I know you like this" or "buy one-get-one-free" -- something like that, because he would balk if I just brought over a bag of groceries (although I once spent $300 on groceries and household stuff for him -- boy was he mad!).

Susan, your idea of having the kids make something is great. What a win-win idea!
