Newbie with a Big Question

Hi All,

Let me first say that I have read many of your posts and seen much of your work. Beautiful, I am in awe. So now a bit of background. I did stain glass hobby many, many years ago...still have all my stuff, grinder, cutter and pounds of glass pieces big and small. I kept all of this stuff thinking that *~someday~* I will get back to it. Well...long story..short, I am now disabled I can't work anymore, I need a hobby. I would love to try mosaic. The problem is my arms and back won't allow me to be bent over cutting all that long.

HERE IS THE QUESTION (finally huh) I was wondering if that "Cutters mate" and "beetle bits" would allow me to do the cutting with relative ease, in other words little pressure involved on my arm and neck. I have spinal stenosis and cannot put pressure on my arm/neck. It is a big investment, and I am trying to do a little project to see if it is something I want to invest in. However, I don't know if Those two devices offer the help that I need. So, Can anyone who uses these things please tell me how easy or difficult it is physically, think as if you had a sprained arm or a injured neck. I appreciate any advice, Thank you ..you all seem so incredibly nice..

I can't answer your question about beetle bits etc. but I did want to jump in here and mention that you can buy little squares of stained glass, already cut, on eBay and also on some of the mosaic merchandise web sites. So if you have designs made up of squares or lines, maybe you can use the little tile-size already cut pieces of glass and concentrate on the gluing and not have to cut much, if at all. Thank you silvamae, and I will no doubt consider that option. Very, very handy to have that part all done for me. I was just thinkin if I really get into it that the cost of buying all the peices already cut might get to expensive. But I do luv that idea.

Many people are consistently able to grow very healthy plants in peat based soils, so it's certainly possible, even if a little more difficult. The original post & many of the follow-ups in the link I provided were written by me, & I use my own soils for the reasons outlined therein. Having done lots of experimenting with various soil components, I'm familiar with their effect on soil structure & chemistry. I use sand in some soils, but it's not the material that most consider sand to be. I use sand composed of particles that are somewhere near the size of BBs. Some a little larger & some a little smaller, but the particles are large. I don't recommend you use beach sand, play sand, or builders sand because though it is effective in promoting drainage, it's small size is death on aeration & it clogs all-important macro-pores or eliminates them. I regularly catch flack for speaking out against the use of compost in container soils. Already in an advanced state of decay, it breaks down quickly in soils, reducing aeration and retaining water. The additional retention of water as a result of its use further hastens not only the breakdown of of the compost, but the other soil components as well. Its one advantage, a possible source of minor elements, is outweighed by its deleterious effects on soil structure and can be compensated for by simply adding the minors in chemical or organic form. Some tout its use, citing the microbial activity it provides. All that's needed for all the microbes a 100% organic soil like most of us grow in can use, is a little moisture & some nitrogen. It's good to remember that too much microbial activity in container plantings has a negative effect on soil structure as a result of the rapid cleaving of hydrocarbon chains in any organic molecules - accelerated soil collapse. Though not ideal, I think you'd be better served by using a good variety of commercial soil with some perlite & pine bark added than to try a mix based on peat/compost/sand. Regarding the plastic: I had done some research on various plastic mulches, and found that some great studies had been done on white, clear, and black plastic mulches (interesting that I found that when I was trying to research the red mulch which supposedly makes tomatoes increase in yields and sweetness... sounds like the jury's still hung on that one; I guess the sunlight has to reflect OFF the red to be effective, and in some growing situations, not much sunlight hits the mulch, thereby negating any positive effect. But I digress...) The research found that black plastic mulches will warm the soil a couple degrees at 2" down, and not quite as much 4-6" down (black captures heat), and white didn't heat the soil much (white reflects most light), but what surprised me was the clear plastic. What they found was that certain wavelengths of light were allowed to enter via infrared, but wouldn't reflect back out. The soil with the clear plastic mulch was crazy--it was something like 10-14 degrees WARMER than non-mulched soil at 2" and 4-6 degrees warmer at 6 inches. I wish I had bookmarked that site, but you could probably find it if you googled "plasticulture." Anyway, I think this is going to be my technique for killing weeds and weed seeds/seedlings in the spring. I have a terrible bindweed problem, and those suckers just will not die (invasive roots can go to 60 FEET), which of course means WAR! I can put down the clear plastic over the rock beds (wet them first so the steam can build) and cover them with clear plastic. Sorry to get off-topic on your original question, but it kinda turned into a plastic mulch thread... Anyway, put the plastic down now; the sun can do much of the work even if the nights are cold, and the plastic will help keep the heat in at night. If you're going to continue to use plastic mulch after the plants are in-ground, you can use the research to apply the proper mulch for the various plants: peas like cooler soil (white), but tomatoes like it kinda warm (black), while okra likes it HOT (clear). Also good to know if a gardener is in the south--you just might inadvertently cook the roots of some of your plants if clear plastic is used! Regarding your original question, I found a package of small-diameter bamboo sticks--painted green, no less--at Walmart for like 3 bucks for about 20 of them. They're great for stabilizing tomatoes until you're able to cage them; just be careful what you use to tie the vines because if it doesn't have some give and take, it might just become a noose. Favorite cheapies are strips of old nylons--they give but are also sturdy enough to do the trick (I have alson been known to use a recently pulled strand of bindweed as a tie!). I expect we may yet have some more frosty nights here in CO, so I bamboo-"staked" my tomatoes in their gallon pots just today because they're getting whipped around in the wind. They're out all day, just like yours, and then into the garage each night unless it's going to be over 45--the garage stays warm enough, especially since there's no wind in there! Too much cold can stunt the growth--especially if you already have flowers, the fruit might not set, so don't rush it. Regarding the pollinating of the flowers--the plants are outside all day, so it's a fair shot that some of the bumbles are buzzing! Maybe pinch off half or 2/3 of the blooms--that way you'll still get some early fruit, but the plants won't be wearing themselves out trying to grow more roots and lots of fruit at the same time. Do a GW search for "hardening off" to get a better idea of how to prepare them for being in the ground. There's some great stuff out there. I'm kinda jealous, though; I waited so long that my indoor starts are puny (the ones I staked are from a swap!). Way to make sure that you've got some good plants ready to go! (and can I get on Santa's list for a greenhouse, too?)

holliwog, The eyes go up, smoothside down. The roots also grow laterally from the top or eyeside so plant large tubers about 3" deep giving them room to expand in pots. You can start them early or grow them indoors in a bright partially sunny window any time of the year. In the midwest they are easiest where they don't get mid-day sun during the hot summer months. Especially with the hybrids keeping them wet enough to grow in full sun can make them rot. I think Tulsa is about as far north as you can expect them to overwinter in the ground. When I see reports of them surviving in the upper midwest I think they must be growing Calla pallustris that looks kind of like a small Zantedeschia aethiopica. Keiko

Climbingpink, my Duchesse has been a pill all her life. She put out about two canes each of her first two years - all in the same angled, awkward direction. What I wouldn't have given for a straight-up vertical cane! Well, this year (her third) I got one. It came out near the top of her tallest cane and went almost 3 feet taller, so now she was lopsided the other way and wierd-looking again. I've been real nervous about cutting anything on her. After all, she might not like it. Last month I conducted an experiment, cutting a few places that looked like blind growth. And lo, the world did not end. So a week ago I took that long high cane and cut it off where it broke from the first cane. And I cut another odd cane the same way. Now I have a fairly round (though still see-through) bush. A friend once grew DdB in a tomato cage and wound up with something that looked like a standard. She liked it. All the best to you - and patience, too. I've needed it with my Duchesse which doesn't in the least resemble a vase. Sherry

Wisrose - YES, yes, yes - these are the products for you. You can score all your glass sitting down - I do, especially with the Cutter's mate. Every product the cutter is positioned at the perfect angle for cutting 90 degree angle I think. As a matter of fact, when I first used the BB system, I was pressing way too hard & had to adjust my pressure & NOT press so hard.

The cutter's mate that arm is already weighted down & you are basically just guiding the arm to score your glass with slight pressure - it's AWESOME!

I know a lady with MS that was going to have to give up on working in stained glass - it was getting too hard for her & she now has the Cutter's Mate & raves about the tool & she has no problems when using it.

I hope this helps - this isn't an advertisement - it's just the facts.

I do have a blog that has some BB system tutorials in it & you can see how easy it is. You are just pressing down on the button of the cutter & sliding down the bar, very easy, & you don't need to be a rocket scientist to get it to work.

Welcome to our site and YES!!! Ray's cutter system is the BEST!!! It is SO WORTH getting for exactly what you have mentioned!!! It is a joyful hobby when you have all the right tools!!! I also recommend a rock tumbler to take the sharp edges off your tesserae, so worth it too! Jane

nicethyme; Thank You for the intro to RAY, I watched the you tube video...it makes cutting glass look like cutting butter...so cool. Gotta have that!

cacbeary; Thank You for the valuable and personal tutorials, they were great. I clearly need the cutters mate but I'm wondering does it not do diamonds and triangles well, is that where beetle bits comes in more useful? I guess I am just confused about needing both systems. Do you have the *flying beetle glass cutter* with your system or do you cut by hand with beetle bits?

And a big ~*~Thank You~*~ to everyone else who welcomed me aboard the mosaic train!

Wisrose - The BB system is for making squares, triangles, etc.The Cutter's mate is more your free form stuff. He has a strip pro that uses the one arm of the Cutter's mate to make strips but I'd buy the BB system & the cutter's mate & don't worry about the strip pro.

If you are interested in making squares, rectangles, diamonds, & triangles - get the BB system first. And then add on the Cutter's Mate at a later time. It takes about 10 min to cut a sheet of glass - it sounds like that is what you are more interested in to start with. He just come out with a Beetle Bit Mini that is smaller & only uses 2 waffle grids & doesn't take up as much space but you have to buy from a SG store. You can always email Ray if that is what you are interested in too for details. I don't know how big a work area you have.

If you notice, my set up on my blog shows the cutter's mate on the left & BB system on the right sitting on the waffle grids. That's what I mean about adding on. I started with the BB system & then added the cutter's mate. I love them both but use the BB system all the time. It is way cheaper cutting yourself. For mosaics it's the BB system & my wheeled nippers that I use all the time.

Welcome Wisrose! You sure came to the right place to get inspired, encouraged, and all the help you'll ever need!
Ray and Carol have pretty much covered all your BB system questions. I started with this: complete system and can't imagine what I ever did without it! AND I just ordered the mini-system from a nearby SG store and am real excited about the portability of it.
Looking forward to seeing all the wonderful things you will create!
