I don't have any stephanias, but I have heard some people have had luck encouraging roots to grow with water therapy techniques. Like suspending them slightly above the water in a bowl/vase. Or even placing the bottom in a water as you would to water prop something. I'm not really a major fan of water propping, but I don't think it's beyond the pale to theorize that you could "force" them like you could paper whites/daffodils/tulips around this time of year. I mean I'm just thinking maybe that could jumpstart something like root production so yiu have a starting point. Could you try just putting them in something like the 5-1-1 mix, watering enough to keep moist and providing a light source? Maybe a heat mat as well, aren't these native to somewhere tropical/subtropical? I really want to add the disclaimer that I am wildly speculating and do not have any firsthand experience with stephanias.

Linnea, Thanks for the "thanks', glad I could be of some help. I finally got a few photos of the plants I have in my rooting set-up, and thought it might be some help for you to see what I am talking about. The first photo is the overall setup in the kitchen window to show just how terribly complicated the whole thing is. There are leaves from two violets rooting in the containers. The top group is from a named plant, and the bottom group from an unnamed plant that I will use for give away plants. Both groups of leaves were started at about the same time (a bit over a month ago). I don't put anything in my rooting water-just pop the leaves off the plant, and drop them in. The second photo shows the base of one set of leaves that has decided not to root yet-It is, however producting a really nice crop of what I call "Mickey Mouse Ears" these are tiny little plants that should soon produce roots as they grow larger, and I will pick them off the leaf stem and pot them into individual pots when they get a bit larger. The third photo shows leaves from the other plant that has decided to just give me a nice set of roots. When These get a bit larger I will plant the leaf stem, roots and all in potting soil, and expect them to soon afterwards produce little leaves. I have cut the leaves (little plants) off these stems and returned the stems to the water, and gotten as many as three little plants off one leaf. I realize we are operating under different stress levels, because if I loose a rooting leaf, I can always go back to the original plant and get more leaves. This time, you are trying to save a particular plant, and should you loose your rooting leaves, you have perhaps lost the entire plant. From what I see of your rooted leaves, it is, in my opinion, highly unlikely that you will loose this 'battle'. keep up the good work, and have fun! Bill
