For the Crafts Fair

I've been working on a few pieces to add for our crafts fair that will benefit our castle (yes, we have a castle in our town)restoration project. Here's the ones I'm finishing up this week.

Ah! For fun, I'll toss in a picture of the castle! It's really nice to have it in our small town.

What a fabulous looking booth & beautiful stuff! And those birdhouses rock oak deer, nothing short of amazing! I am the next person in line to agree with the others when they say to mingle with your customers in a sort of chatty, neighborly manner. Sometimes some things need a little explanation in either the design or thought behind it & some things just almost sell themselves with just a bit more of a nudge from you the seller. You can bet that if you are selling something that is different & a good seller, someone next year will be copying your stuff & they'll be at the same show. I like to try to change things up from year to year, but still do some of the same things, just kickin' em up a notch, if you know what I mean. Some of the reasons that one booth might do better than another is if you can find your stuff cheaper & sell it cheaper, your gonna make more sales. That's why I love refurbishing junk & GS finds. You have next to nothing in it & can turn it around & make a good chunk of change off it if you can think of the right thing to make it into. One year, me & DH made some unique signs & was selling them for $20. No one bought a single one, but I had 3 men literally taking measurements & notes on how they were made. I never seen them being sold anywhere else, but I didn't sell them either, only to friends & personal acquaintances. i wish everyone that's doing craft shows this year all the best of luck - we're gonna need it!

Plastic bags may be tacky but the ones you take into grocery store mostly can't be washed or aren't & I wonder when there will be outbreak of roaches or bedbugs. They are trying to force us to use our own but we have enough trouble with people throwing garbage around, also when I shred mail I put it in 2 of those inside each other so it doesn't get all over the street, I understand that it is problem with birds but campaign to get people to stop leaving their trash & bags on mountain roads or at the beach makes more sense, it is going to cost a lot of people their jobs out here. So we are supposed to buy larger bags to put our garbage in, don't think that will work, I've found rotting beef stew in alley, try cleaning that up, I used a shovel & plastic bag.When neighbors are careless or overfill their trash so lid is back the wind often deposits bags on the streets, easier to pick up bag then have to figure out what to do with some disgusting trash like people that enter our neighborhood in middle of night & drink & leave their "Trojan" wrappers & contents on the streets. If I use the bags I have I will need help getting them in my car & will be carrying in 5 lb. flour then another trip to car to get couple of more items,when I get home, I do it at Sam's as I save enough, they aren't going to discount groceries at regular stores. The gift bags end up on streets too & larger critters could get caught in handles, don't hear complaints about them. It's not a perfect world, trade-offs no matter what you do.I'm sure someone will complain about bubble wrap too.(Yes, I recycle everything & have so much less trash than most of neighbors, no pizza boxes or TV dinners & wasteful packaging for me. I try to stay away from those things...I only live about 5 miles from the road to War Eagle. They're dangerous (lol) at least as traffic is out of control for the area. I'm going to be at ColorFest near Ponca on the Buffalo river the following weekend, trying to sell photography. That'll hopefully keep me safe and out of mischief. Otherwise, I might have to go see what this years hubhub was in War Eagle.

Beautiful play between the VERY ORGANIC and the very sweet pretty tess! I would have a couple of these in my garden in a heartbeat. The Castle is amazing, I tried to figure out by your profile where you live that there is such a building, but couldn't figure it out. What do they use it for? Thank goodness that they saw its heart and valued it enough to restore it!!!!!! I am just watching the photos to see if any fairies or gnomes jump out as a surprise.

I responded earlier, but guess I didn't submit it right. I'll see what I can do about getting up into the attic for you, Flag. There are definately treasures to be found, I'm sure!

Garden Crone, that was an especially nice note. Thank you. The castle is Preston Castle and was built here in Ione, California in the late 1800s as a reform school for boys. It's in Romanesque architecture.

Merle Haggard, Rochester (from the Jack Benney show) and Rory Calhoun all did time there. I guess it worked! They taught the boys trades and discipline and manners like wearing white shirts and ties to dinner. The photos from there are wholey interesting.

It's been in disrepair for many years but the castle foundation is quite active now and we managed to get a roof on it last year. The woodwork was all stripped out years ago to enhance other historical buildings in the state and that will be hard to replace. However, the inside is quite gracious with huge fireplaces and wide halls. It's wonderful to have it here just a couple blocks from the house and to be active with the Castle Foundation. Believe me, there's always something to do!

I'm a newbie and love your birdhouses and turtle! Are the birdhouses really heavy when they are done? Did you start with a wooden bird house? (did I mention I was a newbie?!?!) The turtle is very cute. Thanks for posting the photos.

No, they're not heavy. Most of them are decorative though and just on lightweight forms from Joanne's and Michaels. The first one you can get the forms for at Walmart for around $3.00. They shouldn't be out in the weather at all as moisture would make the wood swell and the pieces come off.
