wood table repair

I'm in need of a sturdy dining table. I found this beautiful Eastern White Pine dining table at a great price, but the catch is that there's a crack in the apron. (Restoration Hardware sells the same table: http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product_suite.jsp?productId=prod1040007&navAction=jump)

A furniture medic quoted $120 to seal it and put in a bracket. I want the job done right, but that seems like a lot of money to put some glue on and attach a bracket. For all you handy gurus out there, would you go with the repairman, or would you do it yourself? If you'd do the repair yourself, how would you do it?

The joint will need to be spread enough to inject glue along the whole crack and then clamped tightly together. Then the appropriate bracket installed with the proper size and length screws.

You might be able to do that---I am a hobby woodworker and a remodler---but do not have the glue injector, clamps nor the bracket/screws.

I could attempt the repair, depending on the situation, but would have to see it to make a judgement.

Point being, for the proper repair, use the proper tools/person.

If the crack is due to shrinking wood, the repair might not hold, and the crack may reappear, in time. Does the crack result in any weakness, or is it simply a cosmetic issue?

If the substrate is swelled due to moisture, the top is toast. You can get a new top made from laminate, plywood, veneer, or solid woods. Affordable is all relative and dependent upon your choices and requirements.

I use liquid hide glue (available in a bottle -- be sure to get a fresh one from the mfg. date). I buy syringes at my pharmacy and inject the glue underneath the bubbles. Smear a little vaseline over the spot, get some waxed paper, and clamp down a wooden caul over the spot overnight. It should suck your veneer back down and hold it for good. Ironing with a damp cloth is likely to damage the finish. Even though it might be repairable, it's not necessary.

In the roughly 10,000 pieces of furniture that I've repaired, there have been 3 that were not some sort of lacquer. Highly unlikely that any commercial furniture made after 1940 is shellac. The reason Pledge was noted was that its silicone oil will dramatically affect most finishes with a problem called "fish-eye" -- little craters when a finish is applied over the top of it. The lifting of the finish is most likely due to a crack in the finish that has allowed water to get underneath and compromise the finish. Letting it go is only get worse.. While there are lots of repair approaches depending upon materials and skill available, you've spent a lot of money on this table and I'd suggest not trying to do a DIY and really messing it up. Contact the seller and see if this is a warranted claim damage. If not, try to find a competent furniture repair technician. A repair might include excavating and inserting a "dutchman", stripping and refinishing the top, filling with polyester filler, epoxy, burn in sticks, or really thick "repair lacquer" depending upon closer evaluation.

My Daughter found this table on FB market place. Works great in their small Boston Apartment, however clearly not wood, nor does it appear to be laminate. It has some chipped paint. Any suggestions for a relatively easy fix to touch up those spots and cover it so that it doesn’t continue to chip? Was thinking that she could mix a paint to touch it up, then put some type of clear coat on it. Any suggestions on type of paint, clear or technique is greatly appreciated!
