Do you all tumble mirrored and Van Gogh glass? Is it safe?

Do NOT tumble Van Gogh! It will def chip. I THINK the mirror glass will have the same results.

How cool! I tried posting the link for you in SG, but I had already posted and it rejected my second message. What is up with that! I have a 3lb tumbler I use and love it. If I just want to smooth the edges, I use dish soap instead of frit, or whatever it's called. I could not find anywhere to put the amount of glass that I tumbled in a cememt mixer! Thanks for the link!

Get a hold of a tumbler(Harbor Frieght) and some stained glass from a stained glass store or Hobby Lobby, and tumble for a day or so...WAAAAYYY cheaper! and easy. Or use bottles smashed up and tumbled. Just make sure it real colored bottles and not the painted stuff as it will wear off. Clear will turn white.

slow- whats the detergent for? Does it make any frothing bubbles?? I read in the directions you could use powder to burnish your rocks if there is a haze on them! daylily- when I tried the jar method described above I tried it. It really worked for me, but I have to say I love the convenience of the tumbler I got today! I used my tumbler for quite a while today doing some china, I had cut up. Now I have to make myself understand..now that its tumbled it will DEFEAT the purpose if I nip them before I use them..I swear I am so horrible about the pieces fitting just so that I'm gonna have to hide the leponitts (which I broke the wheel can you believe it!!!) and hook myself up to shock therapy!!!

I say go w/your inspiration, but I agree w/SEA - no resin for me cuz I think it does sorta commercialize the art work. Another concern I'd have is: what if you accidentally put a hot dish or pan on the resin? I don't think Resin would be appropriate for a kitchen counter. LADYRONNIE used it on her bathroom counter for a safety factor w/her children- perfectly sensible. I am sooooooo enjoying my bathroom since I mosaiced the counter and backsplash. My HM said he thought I'd get tired of the bumps and different textures, but NOT - I LOVE it. I think you have a wonderful idea, and I also think you'll love the process. Not too far out at all. I feel the same about re-sale - this is my house and when I move to Heaven, it'll be my DD's job to sell it, and the new owners can rip it apart and replace the counter w/whatever, but I'm enjoying it now. Long before I knew about mosaics I saw a kitchen counter/backsplash mosaiced in plain rocks, and thought it was fabulous. You'll adjust to anything, no matter if it's a little inconvenient, when you follow your art. Since your DH is open to the idea, seems all y'all have to do is a little negotiating.

In all the glass I tumbled yesterday,8 loads, there was a few small bits of mirror. Just the regular not colored. Not sure if colored makes a difference. The regular did chip around the edges just a little. I would be more concerned with that the water and tumbeling would do to weaken the backing and turn them dark later. I did not see these mirror pieces when filling the tumblers and there was only three so no great loss.

I HAVE tumbled my mirror pieces and have not seen any noticeable difference. But thinking on Chris' comment that maybe the tumbling 'weakens' the mirror backing leads me to wonder if that is what is making the mirror deteriorate on some mosaics. I will be sealing my mirror backs from now on AFTER tumbling.

Whats a glass tumbler? Havent seen one here in Australia, what do you use them for?

Vintage, they are rock tumblers that when you put your glass in it, it softens the edges to make them kid friendly and people friendly.They tumble (kinda like a wash machine) against each other and it wears down the edges. I use mine to make beach glass for projects. You can see what they look like if you visit harbor freights web site and type in rock tumbler.

Does tumbling affect the smooth flat side of stined glass or just the edges? I can only find a toy one here in Australia.

Tumbling only affects the edges except as noted above for glass like Van Gogh that has a painted backing. It sure is nice for 3D projects to have smooth edges.

Vintage, I thought maybe a little explanation was needed. If you want to smooth the edges of your glass, just put the glass in the tumbler with water (about 1/2"-1" over the glass) and a drop of dish detergent. Let it run for 30-45 minutes. If you want the sea glass look, then you add the grit and must tumble it for quite a while.

You can get the same results by placing your glass in a jar or plastic container and shake it or roll it around.
