My MIL has requested a mosaic! she has a collection of glod framed mirrors, things she picks up at thrift stores...

She wants me to make her one ... OMG! I need gold van gogh and gold leaf and... anyone got thoughts... PYRITE suns!!!!

of course this will be MIL's 1st abstract! LOL

Thanks for the ideas and input -- - On the tax revenues issue: No doubt, a scrape and rebuild produces more revenue than leaving an unimproved old house. But in our specific case, the tax base would be increased by allowing us to expand, and remain flat by denying our variance request since there's no chance of a 'scrape' happening while we're still living here. (And we'd live here a while since reselling would be so $ painful.) In fact, if they don't allow the expansion, we'd be foolish to invest ANYTHING in improving our property further as it would probably be considered either a white elephant (no master BR or functional garage) or a scrape by the future buyer -- so sold for lot value. (Reference prices: Lot $800K, w/ Phase II ~$1.8M, post-scrape ~$2.2M) - We've already talked to each of out neighbors about our plans for the house, and they said supportive things. Of course putting it in writing or taking the time to show up in person is a different thing... If you were on the zoning variance board, what type of communication would be most persuasive to you? I could draft a letter/petition and ask them to sign, ask them to write their own letters (who's got time?), or?... - The reason we split Phase I and Phase II was because we were not 100% firm on the space configuration for Phase II. Well, not certain enough to draft it and permit it. And indeed, our vision for the space has changed substantially a few times -- though most recently back to the original! But there seems to be very little sympathy on the board for either the "old administration said it would be OK" or the "it'll be financially devastating" arguments... - I'm not sure how persuasive the 'landfill' arguments would be since our little village doesn't have it's own landfill and hauling off construction debris would all be on us in any case.

Those are AMAZING! My thoughts: The first BB would look good with black grout.( but it is difficult to tell with photos) Maybe you can mix the grouts, black on the red& green, gold on outer sides, or vice versa...?? I really love the geode! Maybe you can paint the ball? There are some nice textured paints that can take the elements. check out these links to get a good idea of what some look like. "Would the groove mistake or any of the scratches or dark areas make you think paint over stain?" No no nooo! Absolutely not. Remedying those would only destroy characteristics of the chairs, I often intentionaly build into new pieces what will later appear to be flaws. It gives me satisfaction seeing somone pause to touch one of those "flaws". Staining will blend the color variations. Not conceal or cover,just pleasantly blend them. What I would do with the groove mistake is clean it up so it will be closer to color of surounding wood. It will only require 15 secounds with an artist's brush to make darker groove appear to run straight through the divot. The seat is white oak so the rays can realy throw you a curve by blotching with stain. For that reason,go slow until you know if it is blotching. One more area where shellac can make the difference between rays appearing as blotchy or beautiful pop. The problem is caused by variations in stain absorbed. To see this at work,stain all 6 surfaces on a scrap of wood. Note how much darker both ends appear compared to 4 sides. On a new unstained piece,sand one end with 180,other with 320,one side with 100 and oppisite with 220 then stain as before. Applying 1-2 or 3 wash coats or different cuts of shellac has similar effect as sanding grits. A good starting point is 1 Lb cut and go from there as you develop a preferance. If using top coat which is thinned with mineral spirits,a wash coat can be made by starting with 1 part finish in 4 parts mineral sprits. Ditto for laquer but don't attempt making wash coats with water base finish,buy commercial.

When I first bought my house almost 18 years ago I wanted to see poppies and lupines growing on the dry slopes of my yard's fringes. I bought seeds and scattered them in the fall. Today the poppies are still going strong, coming back year after year. But the lupines I bought turned out to be anemic little plants that had almost no flowers on them, and the few unspectacular almost invisible flowers that did exist reproduced rapidly and soon I had a vigorously self sowing annual weed that added nothing to my yard. I'm still pulling out specimens today, about 16 years since I first started trying to get rid of them. This year I decided to try again with a perennial lupinus albifrons that I found in a 4 inch pot at Theodore Payne. It has grown rapidly and I had visions of a nice perennial giving me those intense blue flowers year after year. It developed a flower head a few weeks ago and started blooming this week. It is almost white, a pale boring shade of very very light blue, nothing like that intense blue you see in the wild. I have no luck with lupines.

Does she want you to make a gold mirror or do something with one of hers?? How about Van Faux with either gold leaf or gold spray paint And gold mirror tiles?? You could take some clear globs ( or see if they have goldish ones and either gold leaf or paint clear ones? Sort of an abstract all in gold w/different textures. maybe spray some keys gold!!

oh yeah!!!! how bout mirror, van gogh, clear globs painted, crash glass over gold paint, glitter tiles, gold keys... yes maria, all one color but mixed textures and patterns! perfect.

I'll be picking a mirror out to decorate, it seems that all of hers are ?? 9" X 12" ish... I could make something I think?

I'm liking that idea. a monochrome with the abstract in the textures...hmmmm.

This isn't what I'll do with it all, just how I start. I lay all my possible tesserae out and wait for the IDEA to strike.

Oh, yeah, that's going to be good. How about some ts jewelry and spray it gold. something different that may not usually found in gold..thinking along the lines of flowers or something like that

Well, I see this is the start of the thread I just responded to. I have those small gold glitter or (maybe the metallic ones) tiles from M/Maria, and I was disappointed in them. Not glitzy enough for me. Can never find a place to use them. Lots of good suggestions here on making your own tesserae.
