Frame for Kate's Painting

Have had this since last Christmas. It's a watercolor painting that Kate - my DGD painted for her Mo. Since I don't care for the painting, I've had a problem coming up w/a frame. I sprayed it seven layers of watercolor sealer, and used OSB for the substrate. The little slate tiles are from Lowes, and the yellow satin finish glass tiles were purchased from a surplus store in town. Grape-colored 3/4" tiles trimmed to 1/2" were used for the edges. Tomorrow's sealer w/shiny up the slate and charcoal grout. It felt good to be mosaicing again, even though it's something I don't LOVE. There were so many colors in the painting I tried not to draw attention away from it.

Yes, you can paint mirrored glass. Here's one article I found online, if you search you will find more.Paint on Mirrors You could also do a dye/glaze mix to make the beveled frame look antiqued. Don't rule out spray painting--with careful taping it might be the easiest and most effective way to go.

Love the floating frame that IdaClaire put up. Of course, we don't know what else is going on in your house. Is this abstract painting an anomaly or does the rest of your home have more modern elements? A linen mat and more conventional frame would convey a much more traditional look whereas the floating frame with no mat is much more modern. As for the colour, to my eye, the painting looks much more impactful with a dark frame.

I've worked with Frame Destination professionally, and they're a great company. Their wood frames are beautiful and well-made. I can attest to their finishes, too. Would you consider a floater frame? This is typically used for canvas, especially with finished sides. However, if you prefer a traditional frame, pay attention to rabbet (depth) of the frame, as noted above. Typically, it can be difficult to find a thicker frame face with 3/4 inch or larger rabbet. But 2 of the options you found in your original post have rabbets that will work with your art. This option below is from the link above, just playing around with your size. It has a 1-5/16 rabbet--plenty for your canvas. But the frame is only 1 inch wide. The cost would be about $130. https://www.framedestination.com/custom-frames/wood/wood-frame-profile-s24.html This cost is a bit more than the Custom Picture Frames link in your original post (with a 2-inch rabbet). I've not worked with that company. The finish is described as lacquer, which will probably be more shiny and sleek than a painted matte white. The Custom Frames Canada link is 2.5x the cost, but based on what I can see, it's a superior frame to the Custom Picture Frame. (And they have a 30% coupon, it appears.) It's finish is matte white, and has a 1-1/2 rabbet, which works. The Frame USA option is the widest frame face, but it has only a 1/2-inch rabbet, which means your art will protrude 1/4 inch from the back. Personally, I could work around this with framing tools, depending upon where I hung the art, and if I was totally in love with the frame (like a unique antique frame). But this is definitely subpar framing that I would never do for someone else's art, and I wouldn't advise you to do. You have better options. With these options, perhaps consult with a professional framer to compare costs. If you go the online route, go to each site for guidance about framing hardware included/not included with the frame. With Frame Destination, hardware is included, but I always have to call them to be sure I've calculated the "points" correctly before I order. I love your chosen piece and its dimensions. Thank you so much for your input. I'm leaning toward leaving the wood frame around the window as well, so it's nice to hear that you like it. But we've had folks mentioning we should paint it white to match the cabinets, etc. You are right, there is an island with pendant lights in the foreground. (Photography is not one of my skills unfortunately.) Thanks again!

Thanks, y'all. I cut petals for colorful flowers to go around the edges - couldn't help myself, and since my tumbler stopped working, I dug out my ice cream freezer. What a nice tumbler that turned out to be. Hope to get this project finished today, w/the hangers on the back, sealing and the flowers on. WHY do I most always neglect to put the hangers on FIRST???!!!

Wow nice frame...No doubt she is your GD! You can see that wild bohemian style in her painting....LOL!!!! Nice job..I always forget the hangers too...Much easier putting them on before but I always end up doing it after

Ooooh YES, CATH - took me three times to put the hangers on, then had to put washers on the six screws, and then file down cuz they were a still a bit too long. I never learn. THEN, I was disappointed that I didn't notice I'd bought non-glossy Tile Lab sealer!!! I couldn't resit adding a little more color. Might be tacky or gaudi, but hey, that's me - call me gaudy. Don't care.

Really nice job, Slow. It's hard when you don't like a piece and can't alter it, isn't it? I love the flowers too. They add something special, but don't subtract a thing. Well done.

Not gaudy at all, they look just fine. I agree with Ann, they kind of make the painting appear "suspended" in the frame. Was that the right word?

Slow, you did a great job, and I'm sure it was especially hard for you since you didn't care for it anyway.

It doesn't look gaudy to me, and to anyone who says our Slow is that, shame on them, they are just silly uneducated people in the ways of true ART!!

I heard you've been absent a lot, glad you are back. I'll try to check in more often too. Hope you had a nice thanksgiving.

Yes, have been absent - busy as a cat covering poop on a marble floor. Hope to get back to mosaicing after the holidays and PV trip. Thanksgiving was WONDERFUL. I posted pictures of the trip on the conversation side. Thanks, y'all, for your comments.

this is the first time I've been back in a month..
oh, where to begin...
first off, I love that painting..it's random, unique, abstract, colorful and has wonderful movement in it..
give her my compliments, will you?

all around the house, I see my supplies for mosaic and it calls to me but there have been so many things that I've been up to, that it's never given me a chance to even begin to pull it out again..

I will though, you can count on it.
