Patio path done!

WOW, it's done, the path that is. My honey even cut out a turtle. Check it out, no straight lines for him. The turtles eye is iradized dk blue, and he'll be surrounded in tan & browns. That should make him stand out. He's placed behind the brown post in the top pic. I'm starting on the fill-in tomorrow. It's time consumming, but WHAT FUN!!

GOTCHA!!!! ~: D Gorgeous mosaic work! The tiles you used for the turtle, I have the same ones! They have some great colors in them.

i may be too late with this, but i thought i might be able to help. you really don't need the "landscape cloth" layer, and in fact your suspicion that it inhibits the compaction is correct. the compacted dg will tend to break up as it slips on the landscape cloth and be less stable than if it were just on a base course. i am an architect and have been working with landscape architects on decomposed granite paths, parking lots, patios, etc. for years. we have always had problems when the contractor insisted on using some kind of weed prevention cloth layer. the first thing you need to do is REMOVE the grass - don't just kill it. if you leave the dead grass, as it decomposes it will create voids that will cause settlement. the best way to install dg is to compact the base soil with a plate compactor, lay down about 4-6" of what is called aggregate base course or "road base" (assorted size gravel with some fines) and then compact that with the plate compactor, and finally the dg (about 3 inches thick) and compact that too. if the base is properly prepared and everything is compacted that way, it will be a rare and hardy weed that ever makes it's way through. make sure that the surface is crowned slightly or else slopes one way or the other. dg will absorb water, but it does so at a semi-slow rate, and you want to eliminate ponding. you don't really need any kind of stabilizer or binder unless you want to support vehicular traffic. if you do, i don't know that you can get it at lowes or home depot. we usually have it supplied by a company called Stabilizer Solutions (out of Arizona) but they pre-mix it into the material and truck it out to the jobsite (cross country if necessary). not really good for do-it-yourself kind of jobs...

It will not work well to have an abrupt angle like that immediately as one exits the door of greenhouse. Mark it out similarly at any door in real life and test it (especially exiting quickly.) It will be awkward. If there's going to be planting between house and patio, it would be better not to pinch it so tightly. Very few plants are going to appear lush and full if cramped into an 18" depth bed. And consider what heights the plants might be given the wall space at the house. (More height generally needs greater width.) A 4' front-to-back depth bed would be more versatile and attractive. Also, the steps presently seem like a huge object occupying a lot of space on the patio. If the patio was farther from the house, they wouldn't seem to take up so much room. And it might ease constraints in connecting the greenhouse to the patio. Wouldn't it be good to also have paved access to the cellar door? Must the greenhouse abut the home? If not, it seems the orientation of the door could change. I would get away from the computer for a while and scratch out some different possibilities with pencil and paper, working out the functional aspects before being concerned with style elements.

I have done both stamped concrete and paver jobs. I don't have a negative opinion of stamped concrete as do some of other pros in the threads running concurrently about this subject. However, concrete is like cooking; there are many variables. Stamped concrete adds more variables. Therefore, it takes a very experienced subcontractor if one wants to make sure of the outcome. And not absolutely everything can be controlled 100%. If you can find a really good sub -- whose prior work you've inspected -- then you can probably get a result you like. Pavers are easier, and more easily corrected if there are errors to fix.

The contractor surely is suggesting to lay them in a mortar set over the existing concrete right? If so, it works but better be done properly or else one stone coming loose will be very difficult to repair. The surface joints too would need to be well mortared and sealed to prevent any moisture from entering, and don't forget expansion gaps. Laying a gravel base over concrete is an even worse idea IMO. Doesn't compact and creates an impermeable foundation beneath what little gravel base you may have. Furthermore it leaves your entire patio susceptible to any movement experienced by the concrete slab. Gravel bases are used in our climate in part due to their flexibility. In the end I wouldn't do it for a client and if I did I wouldn't warranty it. All that said though, you do have an opportunity to install what I consider to be one of the nicer and more underrated outdoor ground surfaces- reclaimed red brick turned on edge. One of my favorite designers James Van Sweden is big on this as it creates one of the warmest and most transitional (home to exterior) ground surfaces as well as being very amenable to patterned desings. Would need to work with your home and greater landscape though.

yellow- I ALSO have that tile that your dh used on the turtle (looks like alot of us have great taste ha ha!!!)

What did your hubby use to cut the neck and legs? I have a tile saw but I certainly couldnt do those shapes!!!!!! Now Im thinking...I need another tool so I can make cuts like that!!!!

Oh and by the way..your patio is turning out sooooo awesome!!! It is such a beautiful wip!!!!

Just beautiful, and you completed that soooo fast. CHICKEE - you can make the soft curves you see in the turtle w/the tile saw, just have to maneuver it under the blade. I THINK I've seen those tiles at Lowes?????

Thank you, thank you. I've put rhinstone anklebraclets & necklaces on Little Missy, but I haven't put mosaic on her Yet. No she isn't much help, but she makes me smile while I work. Chick, it was done with a tile saw. No new tools. Darn! Would you like a diagram? Here's a pic of 1 of the dasies we did. And some of the background color. It's darker that the walk. So they'll be separate and make the figures stand out.

Yellow- Heck ya I want a diagram!!! My tile saw has the blade coming out of the bottom, its not the kind that has the blade at the top. If I remember right that is how your saw is too. I am just have a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact you can make those shapes with that straight blade!!

YELLOW-ROSIE! This is looking so fabulous! I am so inspired to do our front patio! But you know what...??

I DO NOT have any of that cool turtle-tile, so guess I am NOT turtle-y enough to be in The Turtle Club*! Bummer! But SLOW mentioned they may have it at Lowes? I may have to check that out, even though I have to drive 45 minutes to get there! I'm lovin' this!

*from a line from the movie "The Master of Disguise", can't remember the actor, Jim Carey maybe? "So am I turtle-y enough to be in The Turtle Club?"

A few mentioned that this may be slippery. Ceramic tile is slippery when wet. But between the grout lines and the different levels of tile I think it will be minimal. I'll let you know next year. It may take that long to rain!

Lady, yes, Lowes carries this tile. I wish they carried more colors. It's so hard to find color! And, you have but to 'yearn' to 'belong'.

Chick. I hope I can explain myself here. All cuts are done with the guard on. I covered 2 objects on this diagram. On the Rt is a circle, the LT a turtles head. BL ink shows the object. The 1st cuts are marked in pencil. They are to remove the bulk of unwanted tile (or glass).

2nd cuts are in green. The solid lines are 1 straight cut. The dashes are 2 str, cuts into each other. Making a 'V' cut. Yellow points are sliced off. This leaves only the inside curve left. It's done with many small cuts. 1 into the curve, then UP the curve. In small degrees. Once it gets to this point you're making such small cuts that you can pick the tile up at an angle and move it around on the blade smoothing out the curve. It's much easier to do than to explain. So dump some water in your saw and try it!

Rose... your path is wonderful! The whole thing is just going to be unique... and VERY special! I'm gonna have to look for those tiles at Lowes also... love the color! Hey... I like that little fairy gal on the back of the smiling turtle, too! Almost as cute as Miss Missy! :)
It's a SUPER project! Just keeps getting better and better!
