Window with blind between glass

We are looking for a double hung widow for our kitchen that has a blind built in between the glass.

It would be easier to keep the blind clean and save us from hanging a blind on the inside frame

Any ideas?

Yes that would make it easier for certain, the only problem with that is Pella is the only company that I am aware of that makes this type of unit and the quality of Pella is in my opinion marginal at best

What makes a SH unit easier to operate than a casement? The major manufacturers offer ADA compliant casement hardware and even motorized units that can operate at the push of a button. Casements are more expensive, but with a SH/DH unit you have to buy 2 sets of blind between the glass which will cost more than the casement with a single blind. Who ever you go with make sure they have a good warranty and service. We have done several commercial projects with blinds between the glass and they add some work to the project, but the clients love them. Any sales rep that is bidding the job needs to provide a list of commercial projects that they have installed blinds between the glass on. Preferably projects that are 10 years old and you can go look at. See how the blinds are holding up. A lot of window peddlers will claim they have a product durable enough for commercial use, but only a few of them have the projects and track record to back it up.

If it is a wood door, it is most likely a Pella door. They have a service department that would come out to your home to replace the glass (and blind if necessary) no matter where you live. You wouldn't need a whole new door. A local glass company could replace the glass too but they wouldn't be able to replace the blind if you need a new one. Is your door wood or vinyl (hopefully it's wood because you should never paint over vinyl)? Like the previous post states, check for etchings on the glass or glass spacer for the name of the manufacturer. Hopefully it's there. Sometimes the name is on the hinges too.

They are correct. Most SGD with internal blinds have neither soft-coat low-e or an argon fill. Some do come with hard coat low-e but the blinds tend to offer the client much of the shading control and therefore control the heat. That is probably the biggest complaint (minus just malfunctions and failure) we get around older patio doors - heat and bleaching the floor.

I have Pella patio doors with blinds between the glass in both my dining room and in my master bedroom. Love them. Both of those doors face south and get loads of sun. I hated the vertical blinds I had on the previous doors. Prior to getting the new door I had removed the vertical blinds from the dining room and just hung grommet top panels. I didn't like having to slide those panels across every sunny day and every night. It's so much easier to raise/lower and or tilt the blinds of the between the glass blinds for light control. And the blinds are never in your way when going through the patio doors. I did leave the curtain panels on each side of the dining room door for decoration. I have had the between the glass blinds for almost 4 years and they have been problem free.

I may be mistaken but I think I've seen them as a retrofit option? Home Depot I think...

Interesting that there is another company with the between-the-glass shades/blinds. However, it appears Sunrise are vinyl windows (with woodgrain option) and do not offer paintable/stainable real wood windows.

I did find a company called Royal Tech Vinyl windows ans emailed them but so far they have not got back to me. I could live with a vinyl window behind the sink if need be...

I would be afraid that the blind would fail once the window (and blind) was out of warranty, and then I'd be stuck with the blind in whatever position it was in when it malfunctioned. I have mini blinds in the kitchen over the sink, and they don't get that dusty or dirty as they are 'up' for most of the day. It isn't too bad to just give them a quick 'swish' in the tub every so often.

Enclosed would be a great idea. I know I've seen them on many houses I've worked on, they're magnetic. They're not sealed in the argon sense of the world, in essence they're triple glazing with the argon part to the outside.

You'll just have to google or go to the big hardware stores and look and ask, I know I've seen them on french doors, so windows might be a custom order.

It's actually a great idea for a kitchen window (as long as you don't want an opener I guess) much cleaner.
