PS: my photos do not do it justice. the color is actually a little more darker on the rust side then it looks in the pics - it's gorgeous by the way.

That's lookin' good, Steve. Do you think it will be too dark with the dr wall painted the red? Is that the same bright gold futon cover you showed the swatch of? I don't see any gold in it, at all! I now see there's white trim around the stained doors. Thought it was stained there.

I'm thinking the study door needs to be the red. It looks interrupted to me. An odd breaking point. What are your thoughts on the kitchen and hall?

Can you get a shot of the full back wall stretch, all included? If some of the dr wall can fit in that would be great, too, haha.

the futon cover didn't come through very well. There is rust, gold and some kind of blue-grey like the carpet plus a couple of other earthtones - looks real nice.

When you said "study door"; if you meant the white door in the middle of the wall that is the door to master suite and nearly always open. First I thought both that door and the trim around the french door should be red and leave the trim along the floor white. But I think I am foing to live with it for a while because maybe it provides a nice contrast to all the rust color. right now I am at a complete loss about that long wall. I'm afraid it may be too much red, but your pics in the other thread look pretty good.

This is the same swatch you have? I get beige and brown and what looks to be rust stripes. Barely a hint of gold coming through.

One thing you could do is get some brown kraft paper, or something else. Paint that and cover up some of the wall in the dr to see how it feels.

What I'm calling the study door is the one with the angled glass doors. Thought the hall door was the bath.

Well I guess I did instructions for you on your other thread for nothing. I had no clue you'd gotten so far since I'd not seen this thread. It looks awesome by the way. Love the futon cover too.
I'm with squirrel in thinking that the angled wall could be painted in rust. I think the dining kitchen side needs more color too. Not sure what to suggest though.

I am not sure but I think the rust on that wall would be too much. You could do that wall in a golden color that is in your futon cover.

You don't want your space to look as if it's cut in half; or on the diagonal! There are other ways to lighten up that dr wall, which I think you'll need to do. What do you think about something like this, using a buffy golden color. Stretching into the kitchen and over the door. I goldened up the sofa a tad and added a lighter pillow to lighten things up there, also. The window bay is painted the light color also. Panels transition it all and lighten that wall a good deal.

I don't like that brown over the door and I don't know about splitting those colors at the edge of the kitchen tile. Looks funny to me; but you gave me another idea. IF I can find a good contrasting color I like, how about painting the bay window the red as a tie-in and the rest of the wall the new color.

Glad you found a red color you like! Squirrel is great, isn't she? I love the way she took the rust/red into the dining room, but lightened up the kitchen with a different color. And nothing too dark or bright - just a good neutral to offset the rusty red.

I also like the way Squirrel brought in those panels in the same shade as the kitchen paint. Really brings it all together. And the bay is painted the kitchen color?! I would have never thought of that, but with the panels it looks good.

And I didn't notice before that you have green bar chairs. I think that all looks great together. When you paint the red, don't forget the grey primer!

I've tried a stronger gold, since you seem to like that. It's kind of amber-y, picking up on the rusty-red and good with the blue of your gray carpet.

It's quite hot! so I tried bringing in some green and a little blue, along with the light pillow to break it up. This color seems a bit like the Bees Wax but darker and more amber.

my first thought is maybe painting the long wall the same color as the carpet (it looks gray to me?) to tie everything together? but that maybe too dark so perhaps a lighter gray?

I painted that angle wall red and it looks good.

I just don't know about either the brown shown above or the Bee's Wax color - something is just not right.

I'm leaning toward maybe that long wall should be red like the rest but leave the bay window and that short partition wall white to help mute it a little. Just don't know. The Bee's Wax looks great against the red and against the kitchen cabinets, but I'm afraid the contrast difference may be too much. I only want to paint that wall once because it is a long wall with a lot technical painting. Two much work to do it twice!

I agree something's just not right. If you go into the kitchen with it, only on that wall, rather than stopping at the tile at the breakfast bar, I think it will look rather incomplete because of the tile at the splash (instead of the red) and the red only being above the cabs and a bit more around the window.

I know you probably like your wall art just the way it is, but some light panels and light paintings flanking the bay would really lighten things up.

I think you need a second coat of paint. It looks like you can see the sample colors you painted by the door, showing through.

Oh, I forgot. Is there a backsplash area you can paint on the left wall of the kitchen, or is that all tile too? I put a little swatch on that side. If it's tile, maybe get some rich dark red canisters (or something), to carry the color around in the kitchen.

I like the red too : ) But he's experiencing it first hand. I think some of the other elements just need to be worked, to lighten it up, so it's not just all paint color.

Thanks Steve. I feel better knowing someone over on paint had the same idea. I know it works on flat walls, but wasn't sure about textured. In theory it should, but without doing it myself, I didn't want to say it would work for sure.

I'm liking your home either all in red or the lighter colors. I think if you go all red, but the window and divider, I'd paint them in the lighter (bees wax or amber) so they won't stick out as much. They'll still give you a break, but not such a stark one.

I think he'll need to do that, too, GottaBe. I'd do that part last, and see what you think. Just something warm and light but toned down from the bright white. Don't care for it in the red. It feels very heavy and oppressive.

OK, here is where I see it. First, the backsplash in the kitchen on both sides is all white tile between countertop and bottom of cabinets. the actual kitchen itself will not have a lot of red. Just along both walls above cabinets the two sides in front and the wall at back between ktichen and washroom. It's that huge piece of wall by the bay window, when combined with the other three walls that I'm concerned about; i.e., too much red.

Here's a plan.

Option 1: Paint the whole wall red, except for the bay window and that protruding half wall by the front door.

Option 2: Paint the whole wall Bee's Wax (yellowish gold) except leave the bay window and half wall white.

(note: I have been having a problem with all the edges between the red and white. A lot of 45 and 90 degree edges. I'm going to have to spend a great deal of time cleaning the half of them up before I learned how to paint them without bleed through.)

Option 1, Step 2: Paint the bay window and half wall Bee's Wax. Install a trim strip all the way around the room at that line between the red and white, painted Bee's Wax. and maybe paint the trim around all the doors Bees Wax also, leaving the trim at the floor white.

OK - so vote: (1) red or Bees Wax; and (2) trim strips or not. :)

Option 1 red.

Window bay something light but warm. Haven't seen the real Bees Wax to vote on it. I wouldn't do something too colorful there.

Might do the back wall of the kitchen as the 'Bees Wax.' Does that area have a door or is it just an opening? Looks like a laundry area/back entrance?

Would not throw another trim color in, making three : )

Are you doing light panels at the bay?

I've been following along and love squirrel's work as usual. I agree Option 1. Also leave the trim as is. I love watching this room come together, you work fast.

He does work fast, doesn't he! I picture him as a man on a mission, blinders on, getting the job done, lol.

"Blinder's" is getting a little frustrated. I started taping off that long wall and it's going to be more work than than the other three walls combined because of all the corners, edges, etc. Plus there are a huge amount of footage going to need special treating to keep the paint from bleeding. So anyway, tomarrow or Sunday I am going to paint the bay window half of the wall (up to the kitchen) and leave the bay window and half wall white for know. See how it looks.

Too bad for all that stucco. Put on your favorite music and sing your way through it. Works like a charm to pass the time through drudgery!

It doesn't seem like you are diggin' panels at the window. I just realized the bay area isn't trimmed out. Here it is with some trim, which helps to fill out that area and transition the colors. Don't have to worry about the paint, either. Beeswax at the door as you were thinking; also added it to the back kitchen wall.

Actually I had meant to comment on your hanging curtains outside the bay window. I kind of liked that and may do it later.

This is a closeout for INYO-part II. Things have kinda gone where the went. I going to finish out painting the primary wall area on the kitchen/dining wall, leave the bay window, trim, doors, etc white and clean it all up. then post some new pics for a final review of what else I might do/change on the trim, etc. I'll put it in a new post: "I Need Your Opinion - final Part" :). I have cut in all the wall edges and will finish off in a day or two. You are right in that the bay window has no trim. but I think you will be surprised. I taped off and am painting around the bay window so it looks like it has trim. Kinda hard to explain, have to wait for the pic.

We will anxiously await your return with new photos! Good luck. Sounds like you are heading down hill now, with what is a lot of tedious work.
