Small kitchen window...Inside or outside mount?

Hi,
I'm trying to decide on inside or outside mount roman shade.
It's a small kitchen window 36x40.
Normally I prefer inside, but maybe mounted outside and higher would make it look larger?
I don't want it to look squeezed in.

Shadylady...thanks, this is the only window, so I'm thinking I will prefer to keep as much light as possible.

The mount doesn't have much to do with the cords. The potential issue with Outside mount is that the edges of the shade are not as protected by the frame of the window and can be more easily damaged.

Trailrunner - I have a bungalow too! A little ranch bungalow; about 1300 sq. ft. I will try to post some pics of it this week. I'm in NY, not far from NYC. I don't know if she's a gem -- maybe a semi-precious stone :) I love your marble coffee bar! I am now thinking of a marble shelf to the right of the second (big) window about a foot under the print on the wall. I am a coffee freak so I have various pots -- a french press, an espresso maker for the stove and then another small espresso machine with frother. I'd like to put them all on the marble shelf with cups -- all within reach and easy to just pick which kind of coffee and pot I want to use... Or I might put a completely different wall cabinet there with glass doors. I'm undecided and tired of making decisions and there's no rush. I just love marble though... love it to bits!

Just saw this thread - I don't read kitchen forum as often now that my kitchen has been completed for almost a year. Our pass-through window is pretty much a miniature version of our sliding doors - one fixed window and a sliding window with a sliding screen. I'm 5' 1" and can reach the bottom of the window to close it or slide the screen but I have to stand on a step stool to reach the latch mechanism because it is at middle height on the center of the window. We are in a mild winter hot summer area (near Sacramento, CA). Since our back wall is mostly glass with 4 full size sliding doors plus additional fixed glass panels, the sliding pass through doesn't make much difference. teedup, for hot summers even with the occasional 115 temp, there is at most a 40 degree temp difference from an internal house temp of approx 75. On the other hand if a house is in a cold winter area where the outside temp drops to say 5 below zero, the temp difference is 80 degrees - twice as big a thermal differential - a very well insulated pass through and other windows is probably a bigger issue for cold winter people. And with our semi-arid climate the temperature drops to comfortable or even cool during the night time so we can cool the house back down with a whole house fan. The issue with our very hot summers is more preventing heat gain from the sun shining in these windows rather than the conducted heat through the windows. We deal with that by trees that give our house lots of shade plus putting up some shade umbrellas on the back deck. Our house is old enough that it was built without double pane windows, but with shade, attic fans (which keep the attic from super-heating) and cooling off with whole house fans when the evening temperature drops, we rarely need our air conditioner in the summer.

outside mount and hang it where the top hits the ceiling. that way when it's rolled up the whole window is exposed so you get maximum light and view. it also will balance out the ceiling height cabinets.

I'd do outside mount and mount it up high near the crown molding, and run it the width of the space between the cabinets so it fills the space and acts like a valance when drawn up.

I have inside mount bamboo shades because IMO, inside seems to look neater. If there's space, why not take advantage of it? Just seems right to me.

I prefer inside mounts, especially if the window frame is attractive. If your window were taller I'd recommend it, but I think Annie may be on to something. A stacked shade is going to take up a foot or so of space and that might make your window look even smaller. Since you don't have any crown above the window the expanse of space above the window tends to stand out. I would keep the width of the shade just big enough to cover the frame ... not take it all the way to the cabinets.

I think it should be outside mounted and higher, so that when it's fully drawn up it just covers the top window frame. What a beautiful kitchen!

I prefer inside mount, but depends on how much light you want. If that's your only window in the kitchen, outside mount would allow you to raise it higher and let more light in.
If you do outside mount, I would only make it 1/2" wider on each side so it hugs the window. Anything wider looks like the window is wearing a top hat.

I was leaning that direction, I just didn't want it to appear squeezed in.

Patty...I usually prefer inside mount for the same reasons.

Osage...I think you are right, the window would actually wind up looking smaller!

If you decide to hang it above the window make sure the shade is either tightly woven or lined, otherwise you'll see the wall behind the shade.

Yep, yup high so as not to block any of the window when open :)
