Disengaging?! just a thought

I have read over and over again the word disengage in reference to scenerio after scenerio, situation after situation. And, I can't help to think "Is that the person we thought we would be?" "Is that the person we want to be?"

Take my current scenerio: My oldest SS has ADD. School has never been easy for him and this year is no exception. We are already dealing with not bringing homework home, low test grades, scholarship warnings, and now more recently outright lieing. The other weekend my SS didnt bring home his homework for the weekend. He had a quiz on that homework on Monday. So, no homework = failing quiz grade = not improving grades that were just sent home on scholarship warning. So, all weekend long SS had work to do... study US presidents ... Not fun, but that is the point. It was a fight all day Sunday to get him to do what he was supposed to do... So, finally frustrated with SS I asked him what his punishment should be.. we discussed it and he decided it with the understanding that if he did not hold up his end of the bargain I would take back over and there would be no football no fun. Later that night ex calls hubby to say SS has worked without trouble... we are going to watch a movie can he watch. Hubby was in the process of saying yes, when he saw the look on my face and changed his answer. I was livid... after low grades, no homework, fighting all weekend... he finally does what he is supposed to do for a couple of hours and we want to take back all agreements (ie no tv just reading for rest of night) and say it's okay go watch TV... I dont think so ... what is that teaching him. And, we have mom calling to ask, dad almost saying yes, and me saying what are you guys thinking?? I said something to hubby later to which he said well I dont want to be a dick... to me that is not being a dick... that is teaching him to do what is right and try harder.

Anyways, my point is I was frustrated and upset. What am I going to do; work my butt off for years being the bad guy while everyone else gets to be joe cool... and nothing gets done about anything... I was angry to say the least... I was next to tears... I sat on my front porch thinking for a long time... And that word kept popping into my head ... just disengage ... let it be their problem. It is their child... why should I do all of this if they are not.

And then I thought some more... Can I really do that? Can I really step back and watch a child fail out of school, not do what he is supposed to do, never push, never get him to accomplish what he is so capable of accomplishing? And then what do I say to myself, oh well it wasnt my problem? Will I be able to justify those actions when I am older? or Would I rather say I did everything possible? I worked until I couldnt work anymore... I pushed and pulled and coaxed and prodded and sang and danced until there was nothing more that could be done and therefore I am okay with what the outcome was because I tried.

Really, when I look back which person do I want to be? Do I let go of all of the saintly principles that I have held so high in regard my entire life to just let go now because it's hard... because I don't want him to resent me? Is it better to let go of the person and family I dreamed about and just adapt to what is here in order to deal... or is that just the easy way out?

Just a thought or thoughts to consider... Sorry it ended up being so long
