I've Got The Yell-ows!
Comments (18)Wow, bbtx, you must've read my mind--I was looking at colors like that yesterday! Last night I looked at the orange-y antique in question and realized the finish is truly an awful color: orange pine with a biloous green cast. I've had it since my grandmother died, it was made in the 1850's or so by a cabinet maker relative. It hasn't been refinished since about 1970 when my mom stripped it. G-ma fthought it looked "naked" and painted the top & front panels with OX BLOOD MILK PAINT (her own recipe) to "brighten it up." Now, I adored my G-ma, and have lugged this heavy piece of furnitue aall over the country for years in a twisted form of ancestral worship because mother told me it's a family piece and selling or painting a family piece will earn me a lightening bolt from heaven. And I'm just now thinking "Wait--WHAT??" I'm talked to my older sister last night and SHE'S like "OMG, you took that seriously?" Long story short, (sorry!) aforementioned sister is visiting this weekend and we're going to examine options re: cleaning/refinishing/refinishing or painting this piece so it plays nicely with others an doesn't restrict my decor choices quite so much!...See MoreLet's post outdoor pics. I have Spring Fever!
Comments (78)KitchenKelly, have you seen the WinterSowing forum here on GW? Its a fun way to garden through the winter (although mine is short in GA!). I only found it this winter so i am not an expert but their FAQ page is very informative and the people on that forum are really nice and helpful. Basically, you sow seeds (they have long lists of seeds that are suitable for wintersowing) and leave them outside (covered) in the depth of winter, and they germinate nice and early and with a really good rate. There are amazing photos over there of whole flower beds that have come from wintersown seeds. I have several pots of perennial seedlings ready to plant out! I used to live in Rochester MN. I really miss how beautiful MN is in the winter. Although i do remember tiring of it by March! Hope spring comes soon for you :) Here is a link that might be useful: wintersowing FAQs...See More*headdesk*...I've seen it 1000 times. Why didn't I try it before?
Comments (13)Thanks for all your comments... I am still painting---I work a LOT and have little extra time, so I have to fit this project in an hour or so a day. However, I really do love Ivoire and I am SO happy I tried it. It just seems to be the perfect color for my things. *grin* P.S... I used the "Cashmere" paint and also LOVE that. I have never painted with SW before, but now that I know there is a store in my town, I will be a loyal customer! The finish is so much nicer than even the top of the line Behr or Valspar paints. I even prefer it to BM. YAY!...See MoreI think I've lost my mind....two extremes
Comments (25)If you're thinking Arts & Crafts bungalow, you can always look to some of the originals, many of which now have painted trims (though honestly I *wish* more of them still had their original stained trim, ours included!) It was also very common to paint trim and cabinetry (and thus use "lower grade" wood, which in those days meant redwood or fir instead of oak) in the kitchen, bath, and bedrooms and have stained trim and casework in the dining and living rooms, and that worked fine. That might be a way to manage costs while still getting the look you love. And I've seen some gorgeous kitchen remodels using cherry or fir cabinets with painted white trim and white built-ins that mix it up a bit in houses where the trim had already been painted but people didn't want white kitchens (and didn't want the cost of replacing original trim!) Fir in particular is one of my faves with soapstone, though it is a soft wood so it will ding. We also have a painted gray and white kitchen, which mixes it up a bit in a different way. There's no rule that painted cabs must be white---and honestly, a lot of the reason that listings for houses of that age have painted cabinets (especially white) is that it's a very easy way to clean up and "modernize" older cabinets for resale. (At least, that happens a lot where we live---people paint and put on new counters to sell an older kitchen.) Some of those were probably put in as stained kitchens, but had woods that aren't "trendy" these days and thus dated the kitchens. I love our painted kitchen, but if we'd had the resources, we would have seriously considered QS oak or fir (even the fir was far more costly than our paint-grade poplar). I'd be sure you're okay with the tradeoff before switching gears....See Morepatty_cakes
