Hi, I'm new here. Mainly have just lurked for awhile but had a question and needed advice from the experts (i.e. people who may know what I am talking about.) To make a long story short, I am a mom of 5 children (3 who are stepchildren but we have had full custody of them for 4 years now and I have been there primary caretaker all of this time since Dad works LONG hours.)
I love all of my babies to death...but I have been bugged out by one thing my SD has always done. I will call it the "poor pitiful me" routine. When she (13yrsold) is in any situation where she wants something, whether it be an actual item (purse, clothing), candy or even just sympathy, she is quick to complain about how deprived she is.
For example: She recently spent the night with my husband's sister and complained to her aunt about how she wasn't going to get to go to our county fair on the following Friday because I wouldn't take her. My sister in law called a couple of days later, mentioned how pitiful she sounded about not getting to go to the fair and said she felt so sorry for her that she wanted to pick her up and take her to another fair being held in a nearby county. I asked my sister in law if she realized that my SD and ALL of our kids WERE going to the fair but they would just be going on Monday instead of Friday...and then asked my SIL if she knew why she couldn't go on the day that she wanted to go. She, of course, did not. I then told her "Well, that Friday is the day that I drive her and her brothers 2 hours away to visit their mom for her bimonthly visit...we can't go on that particular day because we won't be in town." SIL seemed to understand at this point but still said SD was so pitiful that she wanted to take her anyway.
As it turns out though, I worked it out with BM for the kids to switch weekends so that they COULD go on that particular Friday...we did this primarily so SD could enter the karaoke contest that day but it was also a more affordable day as well. That day came, and as I promised, I gave her and BS (15yrsold) some money and let them walk around with friends while I rode rides with our younger 3 boys.
The time came for the karaoke contest and myself and SD went to the table for the sign in. She then explained to me that she had a great lunch despite the amount of amount money I gave her. She had been running around with a friend and they spent her money on drinks. When it came time to eat lunch she only had a dollar left. SD tells me that her friend's father asked her why she was only getting a small thing for lunch and she explained to him that I didn't give her much money for food. She said "He told me 'that's not right. you deserve a REAL meal' and he bought me a cheeseburger and fries."
I could go on and on but I won't. You get the general idea. She even does this with me--talking about what BM doesn't buy her or let her do--but I do not cave in. This doesn't really stop the routine though. It's very common and I could list at least 2 other events concerning outside people (friend's parents) where this has happened just in the last month.
My question: Is this something that should even be discussed? Is this common? I know that I do everything in this world for this child from spending time with her, praising her and providing more materially than any 13 year old should have...I know I am a good parent...Do kids do this? My biological sons (15 and 11) have never done this kind of thing and I never did it as a child so it isn't something I am used to...Am I just being touchy because we are talking about a stepchild that I have sacrificed so much for?
