mod, shabby chic or traditional?

This piece shouts MODERN and it's all about color! I was working on this pedestal (a wooden base I've had for more than a year!) before my trip and only just finished it. The mosaic part was finished but I had to grout it and add painted trim to the corners and paint the top and bottom wood bits. I cut a square piece of plain white glass for the top and added a beveled mirror for more interest. Notice that I left some of the 9 square tiles the wrong way out. They look like windows to me. CJ: Did you notice that I used a row of the blue glass tiles you sent?

I'd call it BEAUTIFUL modern!!!! wowzers, that is very different than anything I've seen. very cool!!!!

It shouts "craftsman" or "mission" style to me.

Very nice and I applaud the way you let the pedestal call the shots rather than trying to impose something else over it (how vague and zen-like is that???) LOL.

Decorating with antique sofa without looking too traditional?

So the sofa is in storage right now. I went to go look at it again and it is not even close to how dirty the one in my link was. It is completely white just kind of grayish (probably nothing a little cleaning couldnt fix) so I don't THINK the white trim will be a problem. Also, I am not going to do the full on wainscoting and instead just the chair rail and picture framing. Newdawn, that is actually the exact color I wanted. I found that same picture online! However, we decided to just go for a shabby chic look so the color will probably be a light gray (similar to the color in the link below). I will post pictures (when I learn how) when we have the room all together. So far all we have done is take out the old carpeting and popcorn ceiling so it will be a while.. Now I have another problem. We were planning on redoing the kitchen in a contemporary dark brown with stainless steel appliances. We already bought the appliances and i don't think a shabby chic look will go well with that.. will it be really awkward to have a vintage shabby chic living room leading into a contemporary kitchen?? what to do? I think your cottage chest could work very well with your lovely new mirrored chest if you tweak it up a bit with glass crystal knobs and a flashy tray on top, and special lamp. You should wait for the bedding to make those choices — and maybe painting the chest pink is a possibility — but I think it looks fine for the chest to sit partially in front of the window as you have it. Does a bedside lamp like this on the left have any appeal? Or one more traditional? I think new ceiling lighting will nail the room. The only things thus far I would do differently are a new clock for the mirrored chest and no ivy valence. After you get the bedding, maybe adding a scarf valance in pink or green or a print would be a great touch, but for me the ivy doesn’t work.

I would remove that backsplash and paint above counters. Change out the ceiling fan for LED lighting. I don't know that I would bother with the floor as long as those cabinets are limiting the possibilities. Save the money for a future complete redo when you transform the entire space. If the counters are in good condition then leave them otherwise get stock laminate counters and save the rest for later. I have a rental property with that stye of cabinets. I like them as they are extremely durable and clean up well. Tenants like the organizers, smooth drawer glides and solid construction. As mentioned, many different companies produced this general style from the cheapest to expensive lines. Cabinets in my property are from Plato Woodwork so those were top of the line when new.

I call this on the mod side, but BEAUTIFUL is an even better description. It's just perfectly done! Amazing, spectacular and lots of other positive words that are escaping me right now! Wonderful workmanship!

Well I'll be danged. Who would have thought that modest little wooden pedestal we found in that dinky little TX town over a year ago would turn out so colorful and pretty. Nothing shabby about that, ROSIE, but it surely is chicy chic/. The molding is a very nice touch. Great way to avoid the grout issue at the corners.

Artisticbum: The only "before" photo is the very next photo, the ungrouted piece. The before had wallpaper-like grape leaf decals on the sides and top. That had to be scraped off.

Is this a stand alone piece or do you have another one? It is really cool, lately I've been leaning towards the craftsman look. Nice details!
