Any new reviews on Hurd Casements?

We're about to begin a new build and our builder is trying to steer us toward the Hurd aluminum clad casements for our build. We had also considered Lincoln, Marvin Ingegrity and Kolbe. I know Hurd had a lot of problems and subsequent bankruptcy and were bought in Dec 2008. But the sales guy at the shop the builder uses believes these are now the best bang for the buck. I don't want to loose sleep about the windows in my house. Is there any objective evidence out there that the are now quality casement windows?

There is nothing anyone could ever do or say that would ever convince me to use a Hurd Window. Too many crappy windows over too many years. They always say "this time it will be different". It reminds me of the Peanuts cartoon when Lucy always snatch the ball away before Charlie Brown could kick it. At some point, you just say I don't care. That's how I feel about Hurd. Lied to too many times. I'm not buying it again.

Skydawggy...are you an installer or a consumer? Do you have personal experience with Hurd windows? If so could you please share your experience? I really would appreciate any objective information you have about the casement windows.

After reading all the comments above, Its imperative that I make mine. I owned a window tinting company for 22 years. Of all the window manufactures from 1981 to 1999 when we built our custom home, Marvin was the only true quality competitor to Hurd. We chose Hurd when our home was built in 1999. All of our windows are in great shape to this date except a few cranks have worn out and been replaced. All of our HURDS have 1" thick thermo-pane glass units. Ours are aluminum exterior clad w/ pine wood interiors. I tinted them all in 1999 when we moved in and just had all the tinting redone in 2019. All of our HURD windows are 5' to 6' tall each and very wide. we live in the country. I'm totally shocked at all the above comments.

Eagle? Pella? Hurd? Something better?

Our Eagle windows are in the process of being installed right now, 39 windows and doors in all. We looked at Marvin, Lepage, Pella and a few others before deciding. Bottom line for us was that Eagle offered a much better product for less money. They are all Aluminium with Maple interior, some having Douglas fur instead of the maple. Eagle is not known here in Montreal, I found out about them through this forum. I can honestly say that so far I am extremely happy I went with Eagle. First off, they arrived with the jams and completely stained. We have arches on the faÃ§ade and they look great, without any transoms. Pewter hardware also adds to the look. I have been taking pictures all along and will post some of the windows once I get them downloaded. My installers and others at the site had never heard of Eagle before and all were impressed with the quality and look. My only regret is that we should have gone with maple throughout, as it is really something. Pella, Marvin and LePage were more expensive, when comparing apples to apples. I will add the followingÂ.the Montreal dealer for Anderson/Eagle is also what made the difference. First off, I dealt with the owner and not a salesperson. This alone has made the greatest difference. There was an error in their measurements and the large window overlooking the staircase is 24 inches too small. He himself called me the day we discovered this, after one of his reps came by to inspect, and told me that he would order the new one all at no cost to me. So even once you decide which company you go with, make sure you feel comfortable working with them.

I can only share our experience with Marvin. These are 4 years old AL clad outside and wood inside. We are in northern CA up on a hill. Lots of windows and french doors facing SW. In the summer we get direct sun and 110+ heat on these units. In the winter, heavy wind and rain and some snow and hail hit them. Often, strong wind will whip pea gravel onto the French doors. Kids have hit these doors with frisbees, all sorts of balls, sticks, kites, a couple of bike tires when they crashed. So far, the color has not faded and there are no scratches or dents. Do know that if someone were to hit it hard with a large rock or a sharp object, I am sure it will scratch or dent just like a car body. We are reaplcing our gravel with wood chips this year just in case. As for rolled vs. extruded, the window shop where we ordered the windows showed us a cut-out. The extruded had uniform thickness all the way around sharp corners. The rolled, at least with what they showed us, had a "crimp" or thinner where the metal bent sharply. Is that really bad? Probably not if the metal is thick enough. Luckily, the wood work quality did the trick for us. Marvin had the wood work quality we want, so we got Marvin. If the other brand had the same quality woodwork, it would have made the decision a bit tougher. Good luck with your research and I hope you get something you really apprecaite!

Last longer? I replaced a casement operator last week in Vermont. It's an Andersen unit, from 1962. The patio doors were still in great shape. That's longevity. The cladding merely protects the wood, because society is too lazy to maintain their homes anymore. Fingerjointing reduces waste, and creates a more stable product than solid wood. It's less prone to warping and shrinking, not to mention splitting. None of the finger jointing is visible on a properly trimmed window. Economy priced? Show me any customer that doesn't want a good price. I do agree that all have their disappointments. I have used, and would recommend several brands, including Andersen. My philosophy is that the project and owner will dictate what works best. I'm not sure why you think they don't last, but I can attest to units that are 40+ years old in the field all over New England. And they still service even these older units if needed. Perhaps your area installers need some training. That's why most units, regardless of manufacturer, fail prematurely. My reps are much more than service guys. I'll leave it at that.

From a contractors standpoint, I am 100% in Sky's court.

From a temporary consumer standpoint, I did have them in my previous home and they were "ok". This was a bit more than your builders grade home and as such had a better class of material in them.

As a general rule, Hurd is probably one of the more avoidable brands out there by survey of public opinion.

Hate to be a salmon here, but we've had Hurd casemant/awnings in our house for 18 yrs. with zero call-backs and nary a hint of a problem.
That said, they went through a lot of pain over the past few years, so I don't have a present day reference.

Thanks folks. I'm not willing to take a chance. I think we'll go with Lincoln, Marvin Integrity or Kolbe depending on cost.

Marvin Integrity is going to be your best bet out of that group. I'd put Kolbe in second and I'd be really cautious about Lincoln. I don't have any direct experience with Lincoln but, you hear things..........

Here in Houston, Lincoln's earned a nickname; Leakin Lincolns.

That's not a compliment. I agree with skydawggy, Marvin or Kolbe would be the best options.
