This stuff isn't lightweight, obviously. But a flat-rate box would fit LOTS of materials!

The PO has a flat rate box ..... I once stuffed 12 lbs of broken glass for mosaics into one small box .

This has turned out to be a very interesting thread. Who ever would have thought that someone would think about turning the boxes inside out? That kind of thinking boggles my mind! I need ONE Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box-O-FRB2 Format 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8". Don't know what I'd do with 9 extra. I called the PO to see if they have them so I could get it right away. The very pleasant clerk said after I put the items in the box, I would have to bring it there, and it would have to be inspected before they send it out. Have you heard of that, or was he joking? Surely if you give it to your mailman, he doesn't inspect it, does he? Sue

Thanks for all the input, everyone! I originally planned to use interior grilles, but honestly I'm hesitant to do so unless the manufacturer has specifically tested the assembly using grilles. I'm guessing the effect of the grilles is probably minimal, but it's also my instinct that the grilles could transfer sound if they are touching both panes of glass. Even though we don't have any concrete answers on this yet, you've all confirmed that the basis for my suspicion is valid. I definitely don't want to take a chance on messing up the STC rating after shelling out extra money for beefed-up windows! I'm a little torn as to whether we should continue pursuing dissimilar and/or laminated glass vs. going with storm windows. From my research so far, it looks like we can go from the builder's window option with an STC of 26-28 to a window with dissimilar glass with an STC of 34. I'm hoping that would be a big enough jump to make it worthwhile. I'm guessing it will be sufficient in the main part of the house, but we may need to consider the addition of a storm window in the bedroom if the traffic noise is still too loud at night. We have a pretty limited budget, so we're looking for the most cost-effective solution. Fortunately, our home will be all-brick with upgraded insulation, so the walls shouldn't be a major source of noise infiltration.

oops ! LOL I watch the catalogs .... I know Warner Crivellaro has 1 cent shipping once in a while - I take advantage of it,too ! They have great prices and will match any cheap internet prices you find. I got my ring saw this way -- I found it really cheap on line and they met that price - no problem. They also have free shipping over a certain amount.

What TMG said, plus WC have web incentives so the odd shopping voucher comes your way. They're having a relocation sale so prices are good right now if they have the stock.
Using USPS flat rate is restrictive for broken glass as the packages are small, I'm thinking by the time you conform to the sharp items packaging requirements you wouldn't get much in the box.
Oversized packaging is now subject to a penalty rate of over 5 bucks. Christmas is going to be very profitable for the Post Office!
