Is this square-round table 1940s vintage

I decided I needed a square table for my new small dining room. I never imagined I'd find one this shape, which I like very much and find perfect for the room.

But I don't understand the legs, and I didn't want to get new chairs but my splat chairs would never go - would they?

(Actually, that might be my second question. They are not the heavily carved type of splat chair with wide hips. They are english ash and fairly lightweight and old, with straight legs and a little foot, and seats that do not angle outward toward the front.)

Is this Italian Provincial revival from the 40s? The chair fabric looks 1960s.

It's going into a colonial home. I want the elements that are not obviously very old (pre 1900) to be neutral or at least timeless.

In other words, I don't want anything that looks midcentury modern or anything like that. I don't want anything too evocative or "typee".

How does this table and chairs read?

So is the table a go? What about chairs? Matching or use my old ones?

What I'm seeing is a modern take on Shaker style, and I think it's classic enough to marry into any family.

I'd take the whole set and bring it into a traditional house with new fabric and redesigned (fatter and not overlapping the frame) seat cushions on the chairs.

MCM classicists may think this is heresy - y'all??

Overall I will call this late 50s to early 60s. The forties moderne-->midcentury mod stuff seemed to have fatter, slightly curvier legs. I am not sure that the chairs could take more upholstery without looking misshapen.

I think it is spare enough to go with a lot of things.

Paler gray on the bricks; deeper darker gray on both of the eaves .... white columns; black front door (add silver knocker) -- and please paint the downspout in the same color as the brick! LOL! :) Just teasing! :) No shutters at all .... If possible .... add lighting by the front door -- and in the garden. Add a white-painted round vent at the top of both of the eaves. Remove original plantings -- and expand the garden beds -- and make them flank the walkway. Add some larger gray rocks in several spots and a variety of height in the new plantings. Add vintage garden chairs or a white bench to the front porch.

I don't know of anyone who makes an "uncushioned" hex tile (one with a square edge) now. If you could find it, though, it would be installed the same as standard hex tile, and grouted with sanded grout. One thing you might think about-- if you can't find any that's uncushioned, there's still a way to get that same look. Use the cushioned hex, complete the installation (including grout), let it set for a couple of weeks, and then have a pro who specializes in stone refinishing come in and refinish your floor. What he'll do is actually use a progression of varying grits to grind the floor down, and by the time he's done, your floor should be perfectly flat, just like the one you have now.

Hi Tara -- lots of great advice upthread about how to transform the feel of the rooms while doing very little to change the architecture (also on team remove shutters here...and preferably put nothing up...I've only ever seen accent windows like that left bare but...). April's nailed it re the before/after shots (perhaps a wide-angle lens, too?). You aren't that far away from your own after in that space, though it may not feel that way. Whether you end up with paler or deeper wall shades the key is complementing the wood, so Google This Old House tips for cleaning it so you're working from the best starting point. As someone who's lived in vintage fixers and been involved with fixers I also just wanted to offer encouragement. There's a real mental health toll to living in disarray with no end date, spending spare time fixing, not having enough budget to fix or decorate immediately, perhaps navigating different priorities for what gets fixed when, etc. If any of those apply it's draining...not sure of your story, but if they all apply it can cause even more issues. If you have space to call one room or closet or whatever the crap room, do it and clear as much as possible out of these rooms. If you can DIY the scrubbing and painting do that asap...i think you'll feel a real lift when you walk through the door. If you need to furnish on a tight budget, post separately for ideas you may not have thought of. While I love love love older homes they can carry so many styles of design -- see examples others' posted plus homes of Europeans, who laugh at our idea of "old." I Rx zero heavier dark wood pieces since you're already struggling...hopefully your husband will be on board!

I like the ones Patricia posted. Not only do they look more comfortable, and I can attest to rush seats because I have them, but they are more rounded . I have found that on a round table square seats rarely fit well. Something more rounded physically fits better and if you desire to squeeze more people in on occasion you're able to do so. With a square chair that isnt the case. I suppose the old adage of not fitting a square peg into a round hole may somewhat apply here.

Yes I think it is more MCM 1950-60. Looks a lot like all the furniture my parents had.

These pieces by Dyrlund (Danish) are 1960s. It seems as time went by the legs got closer to the table edges and straighter up and down so yours may be slightly earlier than these examples, but the chairs are very similar.

I agree with 1960-ish. It's mid-century, but fairly subdued and not to "atomic" for lack of a better description. I really like it.

But if you're going for a Colonial Williamsburg-lite type feeling, it may not be for you. Can you post a picture of your chairs?

Definitely what we called Danish MOdern in the 1960s-1970s.

Now I see. It is one of those standard danish modern
oval-oblong tables without the leaf.

Once I see one with the leaf in it becomes more obvious to me.

I love the table. I'm personally not crazy about the chairs but I am pretty eclectic and would choose different chairs. The chairs definitely would be more attractive with new upholstery.
I feel like it a style that could fit into your home.

My MIL had these chairs and a similar table, but the backs was cained. When she died the set was passed to a grand son who recently passed them to his sister, newly married. I was shocked at the cheap IKEA set he preferred. I tried to find the set by doing a search so I could date it. I tried MCM and got no where. I believe her set was maple and the table was round w/o the leaves with a center pedestal leg arrangement. There was a discussion on keeping or passing on hand me downs two weeks ago. This style seems very non specific to me. One that could blend in many decors, not overly large, ornate,or bold. After seeing what he chose vs this set it is easier for me to understand that some styles just would not work in some homes,no matter how "free".

I have a table exactly like that with its matching china closet. My parents bought the set new in 1962, danish modern. I no longer have the chairs, which were nothing like those posted here.

My table has been in constant use since '62 and is quite beat up, but still solid. It could easiy be refinished. The china closet is in excellent condition.
