My parents divorced when I was eight. By the time I was 10, I had quit going for visitation with my father. I remember one Saturday morning as my mother picked me up from my dad's to take me for my gymnastics lessons as I was sitting in the car telling her about how fun the night before had been and how great a time I was having with my father that she flipped out on me. Her words went something like: "You think your dad is so great, don't you? Do you realize what he did to me? I did not tell you the truth as to why we split up. Your father beat me." I was about 9 at this time, I believe. My dad was/is a drinker and when he came home late one night my mother started in on him and things got VERY carried away. I do not in anyway condone a man hitting a woman but sometimes when my mother opens her mouth, I totally understand the desire. You just have to know the woman to understand. Anyway, it didn't take me long to figure out that it drove my mom crazy that I went on my weekends to my dad's and I had one more reason to finding excuses. My older step-brother (as my father had remarried or had moved in with SM by this time) was molesting me. He was 14 and I was 10. I never said a word to anyone. I was worried that I would not be believed and that I would start more arguing and I did not want to be the cause of more arguments. They fought every chance that she could start something. I will give her that my dad did not pay child support regularly, did not show up for birthdays or sporting events, and usually spent most nights of the weekends my sister and I were there at the bar, but today I see the importance of being able to form my own opinions instead of having my mother's beliefs pushed upon me. Pretty soon, I was making up excuses and my mom would love the opportunity to call my dad and tell him that I just did not want to be there this weekend. I did not spend another night at my dad's until I was 18. I finally talked to my dad about not visiting him not very long ago. He was tired of fighting with my mom and he did not fight me not going over there. I believe that my sister went for a little while after I did but it wasn't long before she was staying home every weekend also--I have later found out that my step-brother had turned his attentions to her (she was about 7 at the time) but did not progress as far with her as he had with me. I still hate holidays because my mother controlled every one of them to her schedule and it finally got to the point that the only time we could have Christmas with my dad was at 7 am in the morning and I was back home by about 9. It's sad but my mom still hates my dad although they can now be in the same room without her starting an argument. A few months ago she and I were talking about a friend's husband beating her and she started in on my dad and what a horrible person he was/is. After 28 years, she cannot let it go. They are both remarried and live in different towns but she cannot help just throwing in her comments whenever the opportunity arises.

The beginning of my sophomore year of college, I decided that I could not handle school any longer and called her to tell her that I wanted to come home. She refused and I did the unforgivable, I called my father. I truly understand her reasoning now but felt at the time that she would not listen to mine and once again felt that she was continuing to make every decision in my life for me. I was 19 and felt that I knew what was best for me, which is why I am still trying to finish my degree now because it is now taking forever. I ended up moving in with him for awhile until I got on my feet and things have never been the same between my mom and I. My mom in the meantime went through all of my things that I had packed up at her house and found an old diary. She read it from start to finish. I believe that she found out about the step-brother but she has never asked me about it. She tried to get my dad to read it but he refused. I believe he realized my mom found out A LOT more than she wanted and he did not want to. My dad still does not know what happened and my step-brother acts as if he did nothing wrong. But SB doesn't work, drinks all of the time, and SM and her ex are usually supporting him. I went to counseling a few years back to clear my head and although it is still hard to think about, it doesn't affect me like it once did. My sister, my ex (who told SM, by the way)and two of my closest friends are the only ones that know the story.

My mom will call me once or twice a week or so but it is not the same anymore. For the most part, I do not call her and I do not allow her much interaction with my life because she still tries to control my life by telling me how to raise DS, what I am doing wrong, who to date and who not to date. I end up just putting more distance between us because I am 36 and even though I have made my share of mistakes in my life, I am an adult and allowed to now make my own choices. I am very close to my father and live about a five minute drive from him. When I need someone to talk to, I call my SM. For years, I hated her also because my mom wanted me to but I have found her to be the most non-judgemental person that I know and she will listen without telling me how to live my life. I guess that is why I can turn the other cheek with DS' SM now because I know in the end that the ones that play the games will lose just as my mother has. But if I stand back and let DS make own opinions and choices that he will see what is truly going on. Some days are harder than others and I can feel my mother coming out wanting me to make DS hate ex and SM but I know that is not what is best for DS. He is a smart kid and he will figure it out.
