Loewen and Marvin douglas fir vertical grain count

Hi Everyone,

Im replacing all our home windows and we've narrowed our choices down to Marvin and Loewen. We are going with Douglas Fir Vertical grain on both exterior and interior. No metal cladding. Instead, we are going to just stain the exterior with a marine seal (every 2 years).

Since the stained douglas fir exterior will be exposed to the texas elements, I was wondering if the number of growth rings (i.e vertical grain count) per inch is a deciding factor? The marvin rep showed me a sample of around 22 rings per inch. I was surprised it was that high. The corresponding Loewen has only around 8 per inch. Sounds like the Marvin douglas fir is older growth.

The prices are similar (marvin is $1000 higher). Since the stained wood exterior will be exposed, does anyone think that the larger ring count with the Marvin windows might hold up better to the outside elements versus the Loewen's lower ring count?

Thanks a lot

Will
