Loewen V Marvin V Hurd
Comments (3)I saw stained Loewen at a friend's house and they are beautiful windows. It was about two or three years ago and so far, he has had no problems with them. We use Marvin Ultimate which is AL-clad exterior and we ordered bare wood interior to stain. They are now five years plus a few months old, all are fine. We are in milder central CA near the coast. These windows and doors have put up with searing summer heat of over 100-F to winter temp of around 29-F; wind, rain, some rare snow. So far, so good. We approached a total of three Marvin dealers in our region about six years ago. Two were really bad and they are no longer in business. One long-time Marvin shop got our business because they were respectful and answered all our questions without stupid sales tactics. WE also got a really competent contractor (GC) who did an excellent job. Even the best company will have problems in a small fraction of their products, so it helps to carefully analyze what sort of problems have been reported on-line. Some are systemic problems, some are isolated incidents reported only by very few owners and some are either shipping damage or installation mistakes. Can you share what sort of problems are being reported now? Marvin had a class-action against them way back in the 80's and 90's due to a chemical company's defective wood treatment product. The wood windows rotted and Marvin in turn sued the chemical company. That whole mess was settled long ago and affected owners dealt with. We found the info while we were researching our windows six years ago. I do not know if there are any more new problems associated with Marvin. This class-action thing was recently rehashed and reposted as new by posters either ignorant of the actual dates of the event or for other unknown agenda. If this is what you have been reading, it is safe to ignore. If the problems are new, please do let us know. A friend is also looking at Brothers Custom Windows because of an architect's recommendation but I have absolutely no information about this company. Good luck with your research!...See MoreNeed advice about enlarging rough opening for sliding doors
Comments (2)The sizes given you by the Marvin rep are right on. You should discuss the sizing issue with your contractor but you need a minimum RO of 97 1/8" with a 1/4" on each side rather than Marvin's recommended 1/2". Simpson makes a product called a header hanger that lets you replace some of the trimmers without compromising structural integrity. Of the products that you mention, I would recommend the Marvin. Good luck!...See MoreChoices, choices: Loewen, Marvin, Screens and Cladding
Comments (2)Looks like you and your GC have a couple of items to work out. While the aluminum clad window is in no way shape or form a bullet proof material, it is considerable more shielded and less prone to deteriorate as compared to bare wood. Wood windows require considerably more maintenance and upkeep. No comparison. A properly clad window will live much longer is only maintained slightly. If you need wood to the interior, have you considered a fiberglass window? Same construction look to the exterior, available with wood on the inside, and usually a bit cheaper. I would stay with the factory version of the roll away screen and I think your reasoning on the push out casements is completely correct....See MoreMarvin Integrity
Comments (9)I am wondering if you really need the triple-pane. You may have more options if you don't require triple-pane. I can only speak from my experience. I am in the Chicago area. Last fall I replaced a wall of 5 windows in the master bedroom with Marvin Ultimates, double-pane, not triple-pane. With last winter's polar vortex situation, the outdoor temperature was below zero almost every night for months. Despite below-zero temps and this region's famous howling winds, the bedroom with its new double-pane windows had no drafts, and the comfort level improved 100%. The experts here can maybe advise on how beneficial triple-pane is over double-pane. I just thought I'd suggest that alternative....See Moremillworkman
