Urgent: exterior color advice! pics

I have to choose a color for our house TODAY! Everyone keeps telling me to stick with what I've got. The color that matches it is Kelly Moore Cumberland Cream. The deck surface and stairs will be in terra cotta (KM Point Sienna) and the trim will stay white. The paint is in really bad shape, as you can see from the photo.

I am having second and third thoughts. I am thinking of changing to a pale smoky blue green??? Any suggestions appreciated.

BTW, our town is on the list to have utilities put underground soon - don't those wires look awful!

(The guys on deck are painters.)

I'm sure you'll be getting a lot of good advice here. Mine...well, a pale, smoky green does not sound compatible with the warm tone of your roofing material. If your doing terracotta elswhere on the house, (sounds very nice) the smoky green will be at odds w/that too. You must keep warmth in mind when choosing a shade for your house as the earthy brown roof dicatates that! I love the golden hue you currently have. It is so right for the cottage-like feel of your house & is cheerful w/out being loud. Also love the contrast it provides w/ your plantings. Everything looks so fresh! Your house is adorable. The green, in addition to being too "cool" may also appear dark & drab compared to what you have. I love greens, by the way! I'm not saying this because I hate green! Just don't think it's the best way to go for your exterior! I know choosing paint color can be anxiety-provoking. Breathe...

Yes, I've always loved the color - don't know what the heck I'm thinking.

Hi Pedimom, Wondering if you have had any luck with the grantie seam problem? I am shopping for granite and started to think about your seams. They have been just terrible to you. I am so sorry you are going through this. While learning all I can about granite I found some links on my search. Maybe this will help you on your discussions with the granite people. Other then that pick the end which is not seen as easy from outside the room. The lower the angle you look the easier it can be seen. so when your farther away the seam will stand out more because of the reflective nature of the stone. But any good counter company worth their salt should be able to seam this with little effort and is should hide quite well. Black is a fairly easy color to seam. There is no written rule about this but this is the quality standard in the industry. The joint should be filled flush with epoxy in a color that best matches the general granite color. If you are not happy with the color, ask the installer to redo it. This is not difficult. Sometimes the joint can be made smoother with the epoxy as well. If the joint is still rough, then you will need to have the seams professionally ground down and re-polished. This is not easy to do correctly and even impossible with some homogenous colors. But here are a few other tricks of the trade. Get some large soft rubber suction cups of five or six inch diameter and some turnbuckles eight or ten inches long. Attach one cup to each end of the turnbuckle. After you butter the edge of the seam with the epoxy that you have tinted the color of the granite stone you are using set them in place and squeeze them together gently. Then take your assembly of turnbuckles and suction cups and straddle the seam placing one suction cup on each side. Then spin the turnbuckle to gently pull the two panels together. You don't want to apply too much force here or you will break the suction of the rubber cups to the granite. Wedges are also useful in achieving a tight seam by forcing the panel in the direction of the seam.

I think it depends entirely on the color of your walls. First let me say that I am opposed in almost all cases to pure white ceilings. At the risk of beating a dead horse...a pure white ceiling can look unfinished; if the rooms have 8 or even 9 foot ceilings, it can look like the inside of a box top, and make the ceiling seem to sit down on top of you instead of fading into the air above. A little color in the ceiling makes the room seem finished. That said, I think your existing color does sound a little drab. I have done ceilings in almost-not-there-at-all shades of sky blue, palest peachy pink, and almost undetectable warm yellow, depending on the scheme of the room. The trick is to choose a shade that reflects light, and makes the ceiling almost luminous. Blue ceilings look great in rooms that go toward camel, khaki, brown, or fawn. Peachy ones are wonderful in rooms in shades of gray. Yellow is fresh and envigorating in rooms with green or golden walls...but avoid them in anything with a hint of purple in it. If your room is strongly colored, a very pale tint of the wall color in a pure white base can look wonderful. In SW paint, if you are interested in thinking about doing that, look at SW7173 "Brooklet" and SW 7129 Opera Glass for blues, and SW 7117 "Melon Tint" and SW 7118 "French Vanilla" for peachy tones. Look for similar characteristics in palest yellows, but be careful of yellow unless your rooms get a lot of sunlight.

Well...anytime someone posts a question about interior or exterior materials and finishes, the responses generally result in a range of individual and personal opinions...without much else in the way of learning or useful information. So here's my thoughts to add to the mix: --Your elevations show a combination of stone and brick at the lower levels. Are you really intending to do that? It's very seldom that stone and brick textures, sizes and colors are harmonious and compatible. If it was my house, I'd forget any brick, and limit the stone to a "foundation course", approximately 2 to 3-feet above grade, around all four sides of the house. If you are not prepared to put stone on all sides of the house I would omit it entirely. I certainly would not make one portion of the house full height stone as your elevations show. --Siding: I'd make the siding above the stone foundation course either vertical board and batten or horizontal lap siding. My preference is vertical board and batten. The shingle siding at the upper level of the elevation is fine, and would be harmonious with either vertical board and batten or horizontal lap siding. I would paint everything a single color, and not make two different colors on the elevation. My preference is a warm white, but a neutral earth color would also work well. --Warm white fascia, corner and window trim and exposed soffits is always a timeless and inviting color choice, for virtually any siding type or color. The style of your architecture strongly suggests the need and importance for using window and door trim around all four sides of each opening. Don't make the trim black, especially with dark gray siding. --A dark, monotone roof material would be my first choice; --Natural wood colored shutters seem out of place and inconsistent with the rest of the house. Plus the addition of yet another finish material simply pushes the number of materials and colors over the top. Less is always more, and much more appealing over a longer period. I'd paint the shutters a color harmonious with the siding color. For example, if the siding is a warm white, I'd make the shutters a very dark green, almost black. --Down spouts are utilitarian--they are not, nor are intended to be, design elements. Thus the best finish is often to make them match the walls where they are attached. --Finally, the doors. If you like, front doors are often appealing with a painted, contrasting but harmonious color. For example, if the siding is dark gray, the front door could be a bright red or yellow. The garage door(s) however are always too large and out of scale for a residential building, thus, making them the same color as the siding, so that the doors do not stand out visually, is always a good idea. Here's a smokey, blue-gray. I guess you could do it on the lattice, too. Tying in the roof and floor color to the rail, also. Might as well put the options out there!

Postum, do you want someone out there to photoshop any other colors? Like squirrel said, it's helpful in visualizing the alternatives.

I think she's set on her original color, which she does love.

Here are some greens for TeaCat, and a different blue (the first is looking baby blue now for some reason). Just for curiosity and viewing pleasure : )

Stick with what you've got. It's very cheery, as stinky said. It ain't broke....don't fix it! :-) Really sweet house, btw.

Squirrel, nice job. Maybe she'll see your new concoctions & it will help her further. I like the sandy color. It's very subtle & warm. But the original is still my fave.

Hmm, I saw blue-gray in your post, Postum, not blue-green. We have some of those around here. Sorry about that!

Hope you get to do some color tests on your selection so that your new one ends up about the same.

I also love the color of Zipdee's house which I think is SW Compatible Cream. It's not a golden color, but it is a brighter color. It's half way down the page.

You guys are the greatest!

I'm having minor painter problems - he was supposed to come out yesterday afternoon and put on a bunch of samples so I could see them before work today, but he never showed. I passed him in his truck on the way to work this morning! They are supposed to be starting painting today, but I told dh not to let them start till I check all the samples.

Both dh and the painters balked when I asked for samples. Now, it clearly states on the contract "Paint samples to be applied for customer approval yadayada..." but dh and the painter are telling me it's going to "look just like it does on the chip" and "why try any other colors?"
May I hear a collective groan?

Anyhow, in addition to the Cumberland Cream, I'm having a couple of richer (but similar) colors put on, and trying out a green called Coronado Moss. I'll try and post a photo of the samples if those crazy guys will even let me get a look at them.

Believe it or not but I lived in a house that color and with the same color roof. After being in the house a few years, I decided I wanted to change the color. I went with a buttery color and kept the trim white, painted the front door a dark red and adorned it with brass.

When I sold the house, the lady who bought it (not knowing she had ever seen it before) asked me what was the color I had on the house before I painted it this color, that she had driven by that house so many times saying she loved that house and the color, and wanted it for 10 years before she bought it. So maybe the color you have is the color it loves.
