Making your own molds for stones

There are sooooooo many things out there that make great molds - usually a one time use , but what the heck ??? I Have made molds from plastic candy boxes ........ plastic bakery containers ......soda bottles ....jello molds .... so much more I Can't think ! Let's list what we've used creatively for molds :)

Usually I have been using cool shaped cake pans or jello molds.

I've made concrete bowls using plastic bowls that DH cut in half and then taped together..those are actually reusable. Pretty much everything I've gotten to use is reusable.

don't leave out the leaves....
actually, today I was thinking about making a 'drape' mold.
taking a pot or bowl and with the cement/tufa, to lather the cement all over it and when it's just at a good set up time..to take leaves and cover the cement. as it cures, the imprints would be on the outside of the container, rather than just the inside of a cast leaf..
I was driving, while thinking about it..lol
that's when a lot of ideas happen.

it was more fun than thinking of where I was headed..
to pay the power bill lol

Millie_36, I made large containers using river rock (beige aquarium gravel) held on with outdoor caluk. Supplies.. Styrofoam box any size Rocks any kind Caulk (it comes in colors) Plastic knife sheet of plastic Cleaner bag works good Spread your caulking on one side of the box. Like icing a cake. 1" thick. Spread gravel on the plastic and press the glue side of your box on the gravel. Repeat until the enrire box is covered. Any blank spots put more glue and press some gravel in between. It helps to have rubber gloves for this step. I had glue on my hands for days, LOL! I am sure you can use little bowls in place of the styrofoam since they are doing those Bowling Balls on the Garden Junk forum with the glue.

In answer to using old plush toys filled with soil? Why Not? Plants are rather adaptive and you will find something willing to take over and be cut back regularly, returning with a vengeance to cover that toy completely. I make topiary for a living and have used alot of drainage pipe for letters like a billboard I did in SF for garden.com that was completely planted with ficus vine for a years' contract. I secured the black plastic 4" tubing to the billboard forming letters along the way, forty feet up...filled with soil, made plant holes 1 per foot,covered in sphagnum moss secured with fishing line, made a solar powered drip system with 50 gallon drum water reservoir (remote location) pumped it 40' up, another pump for 40' across...The new disney retail headquarters in Pasadena, CA has an 18' Mickey Mouse Archway at the entrance...it has alot of spare space inside and is filled with refuse plastic. the plants dont mind as long as they have soil and water to grow in. The 15' ABSOLUT bottle I did in St Thomas has basically a teddy bear lining inside to hold plants and soils in, come to think of it. 3 months later the ficus vine had fully taken over, no doubt it did not hurt using grey water for conservation methods...dark green plants after that!

I'm not sure if offset newspapers still sell old metal plates, but if they do they would be great to use as a ceiling "square". Depending on the printing press, the size varies. I can picture it working. Make a jig for what you want the impression to look like out of molding. lay the plate down with the ink side towards the molding and whack with a rubber mallet to shape it around the form of the moldings. The plates are rugged aluminum but would take an impression I'm sure! The plates are held onto the press with a bend that runs the longest length about a quarter of an inch. You could maybe overlap these and fasten to strapping with a fancy tack of something. I saw a show on HGTV where a guy in FL used them as siding on his castle! Hey, it is worth at least a trip to the newspaper to ask about them. Several years ago when I worked in the printing industry they went for $3.00 a dozen which would cover a heck of a lot of footage. those silicone baking pans make great molds and they are reusable. ive used mine 4 or 5 times already

Guess i'm not all that creative...i've never made a mold...get some moldy bread once in a while tho....wish they made 1/2 loaves .LOL

I have been slowly making rocks to go around my flower beds. On the Accoutrements or Hypertufa forum (I check them all regularly so I can't remember which one.)someone suggested using plastic bags from the grocery store to create the rock form. Just put your mixture in it, twist up and ta-da. I used them and WOW! It really worked. Thank you Wendy2shoes!

I just bought one of those silicone molds you bake in, it's a rose shape, bought it at a thrift store, and the first thing Klinger and I thought when we saw it, was, concrete rose!!! Well maybe I'll make my choc zucc cake first!lol!
