Rotted door studs - How to fix?

Hey,

I was ready to place my patio door order with Lowes yesterday for one of those Pella doors when they said their installers will not fix studs. Is it that complicated to pull out 2 studs and put in 2 new ones? I don't get it. I figured they would charge me the install price and then charge me for the repair.

Is my only choice the Pella store now? I expected to have to pay a lot for an install because of my repair problem and wanted to save a small amount of money by ordering through Lowes.

Please somebody give some advice. The carpenters near me are busy with big jobs and want me to wait at least a month before coming to check out the job. I really need to get this moving.

I have installers who install for Lowes every day. Lowes is very strict on any re-working of the opening. Some installers are just babies and won't do it. We do it everyday here in MN. To just knock out the Jack Studs and insert two new ones is about as easy as it gets. Sounds like they just don't have the experience or their Area Installation Manager (AIM) has tightened the reins on what they can and can't do. If you have any doubt with their decision you can ask to speak with the Operations Manager of the store and have them clarify why they can't do it. Just let them know this does not fall under the category of "Altering The Existing Opening". They would only be repairing the opening. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the tip.
I went back today and spoke with the dept. mgr. He said he would send them out to measure but that he expected the paperwork would come back saying the job was rejected because of the repair involved. I asked him if he had qualified carpenters doing this work why it was not possible for them to do this on the side and then do the installation through Lowes. He said I could try it.

I can't believe they are passing up $2,000 because of needing to remove and install 2 (2x4)s. It makes me think their installers must not know how to make a repair.

You need a lot more information to design the header. Roof pitch and snow loads right off the bat. Header span tables are all over the place. The problem is in knowing how to compute the loads.

That stud is nailed in place with a neighboring stud (there are 3 all next to each other: 2 to hold up the lintel, one to take up space since the cabinet extends 1/2 inch into doorway) The cabinets are also screwed into that stud along with the drywall. So I can't easy take that stud out. I have to cut a part of it off with it in place. I'll have probably have to do the hand planing idea, and finish the part near the floor with a hacksaw or something. A door will not be hung there. This was just going to be drywalled over to be an entryway. Jonnyp - The stud was straight. I know about eyeballing studs. The issue is that it was squared up, and nobody noticed it shifted as it was nailed into place.

I'ld replace that entire board ... looks to be a 1"x6" with a rounded over edge. Get it in a pre-treated pine variety of the appropriate length and paint it white to match, and fasten it securely to the wall. That looks like moisture damage, most likely from either warm air coming in through the cracks and leaving condensed water on your wood, or cold air coming in through the cracks and condensing the moisture in the house where it ends up on the wood. Either way it's bad for your wood. After you have replaced the board properly, you will definitely want to look in to replacing the weatherstripping and seals around that area to solve the actual cause of this problem, or you will end up replacing the board again in the future. Pre-treated lumber will stand up to that kind of abuse for longer than untreated wood, but in the end, the water will win.

Sorry for bringing this post back to life: My wife and I just moved to a new house. We got some guys to do all the renovations and the finished product was good and fine. Installed new doors, new tiles, the works. But after a night out we noticed the light from the inside seeping very noticeably from the sides of the door. My wife has OCD and it irks her just by looking at the tiny cracks. A friend highly recommended to call this door installation company (He said they do it fast and clean) and get them to install a new door with a perfect fit from the panels. Question: Is it more expensive to do it yourself? What do I need to buy if I do it? or should I just call the door installation company? I'm not really good at housework. (I have a health condition. The issue is actually bigger than the jack studs. If they are rotted, then there is a water management problem somewhere. Replacing the studs and door may not solve the problem, leaving the new contractor responsible. And if the jack studs are rotted that badly, I'd imagine the king studs ans sill plate can't be too pretty either. Now you're talking about structural repairs.
While most of the installers for the big boxes are qualified to handle the work, it is beyond the scope of work allowed by the box stores, and may not be covered by their insurance.
While it may take a little while, it will be worth it in the long run to have a qualified remodeler look at the damage and determine the extent of work needed. This way, it gets fixed the right way the first time. Good Luck!!!
