New to this forum - here are a few projects

I have read this forum before, but finally decided to register. I wanted to post a few pictures, but don't know if they will show up. I mainly cover rocks and statues with stained glass. Some take months to complete.

Very nice work. That frog..WOW!! Looks big enough to be a frog HOTEL! I also really like the dog picture. The frame design is nice. The worm is just too cute!

Remember that peat-based mixes dry out very quickly in summer, especially in raised beds or in containers. Once a peat-based mix is very dry, it is hard to re-wet it because the peat will try to shed the moisture. To avoid that scenario,strive to never let the peat-based mix get that dry. As Susan said, you may have to water more than once a day in the hottest weather, especially if it is hot, windy weather. When you go away for a few days, you'll either need to have someone come check their moisture level every day and water if needed, or at least put them on a drip irrigation system with a timer so they get adequate moisture. Plants in containers cannot tolerate neglect as well as plants in the ground because they cannot just send out roots farther searching for water. Be sure you know what the pH of your water is and keep that in mind with watering. Even when you plant blueberries in an acid-rich soil-less mix, if you water them with pretty alkaline water all the time, that alkaline irrigation water can affect your ph of your soil-less mix and can affect the plants. If you could catch rainwater in a rain barrel, that would be better for them than alkaline water if your water happens to be strongly alkaline. I have experience with this issue because our water from our local rural water co-op routinely tests at a pH of 8,2 or 8,3, I've linked the OSU Fact Sheet on growing blueberries in the home garden for you. It is full of useful information. While blueberries are able to tolerate cold weather once established, remember that yours are not well-established yet. If they've been growing in a nice, warm greenhouse all winter, they could be hurt by a sudden very cold spell were one to occur in the next month or two merely because it is very different from what they are used to. Once your plants are acclimated to cold weather, then the kind of weather we have here in winter won't bother them. Some companies sell worm tea that is really only the leachate dripping out of the bin. This may be good or bad for plants depending on what was in the bin and what actually dripped through. Real Worm Casting tea would be brewed by soaking castings in water. If you seal it tight in a bottle, you kill a lot of the good microbes that are a primary purpose of using worm products. Unless you really are planning a comercial operation of worm farming in your spare room, I doubt you are going to be buried in castings. Remember that you have to feed the worms a fair bit to get that kind of production of castings and you need a large number of worms in order to produce it. Also, 15 pounds of castings isn't actually that much, perhaps three gallons (provided they are wet instead of dehydrated.) If you have not yet spent any money, I too would suggest building your own small bin to get the feel for worm farming. It could be a rubbermaid bin or a home built wood bin. (we built a 2' by 4' plywood box on legs for our worms.) We started small with 2# of worms and only filled up half of that plywood box. After 3 months it is starting to look like we should add bedding and food into the other half and eventually we can harvest from the original half. Things I have learned from my first three months of worm farming. 1- You don't actually need to water them very much as food provides most of the moisture necessary so long as the original bedding was appropriately moist. 2- If you overfeed, it will get hot and stinky in the bin. (make sure to leave a "safe" area of the bin where you don't feed so that the worms will have a cool place to wait out the heat if they need.) 3- shredded paper clumps so make sure to mix it well with other stuff. I like cardboard bedding. 4- There are likely to be many other critters in the bin. Most of em may indicate something about the conditions but generally are not a problem in and of themselves. 5- Here in zone 9, outdoor worms like an ice bottle in the summer if you can manage it. They will survive without though.

Wow--thanks again, everyone. I guess sometimes I just wonder if I'm doing things right. You know, you get used to seeing the same thing day after day, so you just get used to it, even if it's hideous! I do love having a morning room. It was the ONE thing that my husband insisted on when we built the house, and I'm so thankful now that we did! funkyart: the flowers on the table are fresh cut from my garden...I've been working on a perennial/cutting garden for a few years now and it's finally paying off!! We're actually in WV, on the border of MD, but most of my family is from PA, so we know Boscovs. It is gorgeous...we're on our way to the pool as soon as I'm off the computer! parma42: I like the idea of putting 2 pictures there. That would fill the space more. I'll have to be on the lookout for a good deal (which I love to do!!). daisyadair: thank you! The window treatments are actually from Lowes. They are single straight valances, but I pinned them together and added the little pull up part in the middle. It was one really straight long line when we first hung them, so I'm happy they turned out. The desk I found at Home Goods, and it was 20% off b/c it had a little scratch on it (which I fixed easily with a black permanent pen). I'll hand the desk over any day to you, if the bills stacked on it can go with it!! :) bodica: Thank you. So you saw my next room we are working on too!! The color is SW Pennywise. I fell in love the picture that is hanging in there, and worked the room around it. I did the first floor bathroom in SW Spicy Hue (which is one shade darker) as well. Once the house is clean, I'll post more pictures. Oh, and I should give my DH credit for the crown molding/chair rail and picture frames on the lower half of the dining room. Dave, thank you! Well... the garden house was created by my wonderfully talented hubby who, when I showed him a picture of a similar one in a magazine and asked if he could build it, he promptly said, CAN I?? In a bit of an offended tone. Anyways, he built it and I often have dinner parties, luncheons and that sort of thing. He also repurposed a swing out of an old iron bed so I can sit and relax and just have a place of my own to enjoy. He told me I had a "she shed" before they were cool. Haha! Carol, hmmm. Maybe I could make enough to pay for my all my new rose purchases :)

I've been doing this probably 2 years. Yes have a serious addiction to it. I love to cut micro pieces of glass to cover things. Right now am working on a terra cotta frog that has taken two 10x20 sheets of green glass and one 8x10 glass for his chest. All done with triangles. Soon I will be starting on a halloween pumpkin with 1/4" squares of orange with black grout. I just love all the work I've seen on this forum.

It is probably 12" high by 16" long. It weighed nine pounds before I started putting glass on it. I wanted to add that I hand cut each piece (sometimes 1000 for one statue) and don't own a grinder. I've just started putting pictures in the photobucket. Here are a few more I finished this summer:
Do you see these photos or do you have to copy and see them in photobucket? I can't see them myself, only the typing.

Beautiful! That frog is great. I'm sure it just shines in the sun! The ladybug was cute, too! How did you do that dog? Are you able to see things as stained glass, or did you use a computer program?

I really like your worm!! Then the frog..they are all great but those two caught my eye. Welcome to our madness. Now for the membership dues...you have to go out and buy at least two items from a second hand store and wa-la you have paid your dues!!! (just kidding)

Seaglassic-highlight one pic line, hit Control key and C key at the same time to copy it. Open new tap, put cursor in address link bar and hit control key and letter V at the same time. It will copy it into the address bar and show the pic.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. The dog was originally a picture I drew of my dog and then one day I thought I would try transferring the picture to the glass in a picture frame. Took a long time to get that one done. Don't use any kind of computer program for anything. I kind of look at an object and then just go for it with color choice. I live in North Carolina for the person that asked. Here are a few more:

I found the buddha at Big Lots for about $10.00. I do a lot of browsing around there, Garden Ridge, get some stuff from e-bay. My next project should be coming in the mail - a halloween pumpkin, that should be fun.

OH MY GOSH!! Your stuff is FABULOUS! I especially LOVE the bluebird! He's (or she's) GORGEOUS! Tell me, what is the glass you used for it? So glad you joined us, I have two southwest style coyotes that I've been staring at just knowing that my pieces would be too big of scale but the micro mosaics would be perfect...seem to forget about that. THANKS for sharing and WELCOME!!

Did you add some more pics to your photobucket? How did I miss that bluebird? Where did you find the bird statue for that? Please say somewhere near me and that it was cheap!!

oh yeah, you DID add more pictures to your album. OMG - the bluebird - FANTASTIC!! And those pots - I just love all your pots - they are gorgeous. And every time I look at that buddha I'm amazed all over again. Beautiful work, so glad you joined us.

The bird I'm sorry to say came from Kohl's during the summer when all their outdoor stuff was on sale. The glass I used for the bluebird was Van Gogh Blue and used the blue/green on the tail and wings. That one was a pistol to complete. Sometimes by the end of the project I am absolutely sick of cutting small pieces, and my arm is beyond hurting but it is my stress relief and keeps me out of trouble!
