crisis of my own

As you are all well aware of the difficult situation with blended families...I have a situation of my own and I hope someone can offer some helpful advice.

My daughter(14) and my new wife are really clashing right now. To the point that my wife says it's either my daughter or her and one of them has to go. I am pulling my hair out at this point and don't know where to turn or what to do.

Daughter is always lying to us and being sneaky. She gets grounded etc. There is always consequences but my wife thinks she needs a spanking. I think at 14, they are past that point and other methods are more effective. I always look at the situation from all sides to feel that I have the whole story before I make assumptions where my wife is more reactionary. She and daughter have clashed on numerous occasions coming toe to toe before I stepped in to defend what my wife was saying.

Current situation is that my daughter has been disrepectful to me lately and yesterday, I decided to take away her cell phone. I also got the code and went through her text messages. Most were harmless but there were a few where it was clear that she was bashing my wife and others were she has not been where she said she told us she would be (being sneaky).

Anyway, wife took her phone to work today and a text message comes across from one of her friends saying "You better stop going through XXX's (daughters) phone" I called my daughter and told her that it was not her friends place to tell us as parents what we should or should not do. With her being 14, we have the right to check up on her and know what she is doing. I have also told her that things that happen in our home stay in our home and don't belong outside of there. It's for our family to deal with and no one else regardless if she thinks it is fair or not. We are the parents and make the decisions.

That text was followed up with one that tried to cover the first one up something lke "Uhhh, XXX (daughters name), you know what I mean". That told me that my daughter had gotten ahold of her friend and told her that I was upset about the first text message. She is not supposed to use a phone right now other than to contact her work or me in an emergency. That is issue 2.

Wife calls and says that she has had enough of the stress from my daughter and that she will move unless my daughter moves back in with her mother. She is tired of her lies. She has put up with a lot from my ex and I think everything is snowballing her as she is working 2+ jobs and going to school this summer while preparing for coninuation of her nursing program this fall. She is stressed to say the least and I am trying to manage everyone so I am streessed to the max as well.

I don't think she will be satisfied unless I do something major to bring a change to the situation. My daughter cannot move back with her mom and that would not be a good situation for her even if it was an option. I don't want my wife to be so stressed that she wants to move out.

I am against divorce at this point in my life and look at our commitment as a lifelong one and she agreeed to the same but this stress is eating her alive.

I am one not to make assumtions and get the facts. She is more reactionary and not trusting. I see both view points but think you need to take time to get the facts the best way you know how before administering punishment.

Please give me your insight......soon.
