SM & BM chat? What do you think?

Haven't posted in a while, but our situation continues...

Just a reminder...our "situation" is that SD15 wants to return to Michigan to live for high school.

DH & ex had their meeting (with attornies) with court referee...couldn't come to an agreement. SD had her private meeting with referee. Then referee had ANOTHER meeting with DH & ex, without their attornies. The referee is surprised and disappointed that no agreement has been reached (ie, Mom has not agreed to the change). Now, a hearing (of sorts) is scheduled for the end of this month. The same referee will preside over the hearing, and we assume that he will render his verdict in SD's favor, as he commented on how impressed he was with her maturity, ability to clearly articulate her wishes and why she wants to move here. Unfortunately, he expects that Mom will likely appeal, and force a de novo hearing with the judge in family court. And he is concerned that it could drag into September, after the start of school.

So, I've been thinking about talking directly to Mom. Our relationship has always been o.k., and we've had some fairly deep discussions about the kids. My reason for this is because I really don't think she's heard "the whole story" from SD. SD HAS told Mom that yes, she wants to move here. But that's the extent of it, because (according to SD) that's when Mom starts laying on the guilt trips, and asking things like, "Why would you want to leave me here with no kids", and "What's so awful about living here". SD has tried to explain that it's not about Mom or stepdad or living there at all, it's really just that she misses her dad and wants to spend a few years here before she's an adult. She wants Dad to be on the sidelines cheering her on, and coaching her track team, and seeing her dance. She's missed "showing off" for Dad and seeing how proud he is of her. Also, she really wants to "be there" for her little sister(5) and be a "big part of her life" and teach her things, etc. She is a great big sister.

These are things that I don't think Mom has heard. And I wonder if that would help her to be able to see that this isn't about "mom vs. dad" and who will be the winner. That this is really about things that are profoundly important to her daughter, but she hasn't been able to share with Mom because the conversation always turns into "mom's issues". SD has said that she is "fine with talking to the judge" if she has to...of course, she would rather not have to. My hope is to try and help Mom get to the point of not making SD have to endure the court scene, if possible.

What do you guys think? As I said, we've had a pretty good working relationship, up until now. I know that she's likely fairly annoyed with DH, but I have remained very distant from all of their meetings, etc. So, I think this might not be a bad idea.

Have any of you ever been able to really have serious conversations with BM about this kind of stuff?

Let me know...
