replace wood pane with glass pane / insert ?
Comments (1)Is this is a wood door with 1/4" flat panels?. If it is you can cut off the interior stops that hold the panels in. Measure the opening and deduct an 1/8" or so from the width and height. Have the glass cut locally. Buy some small molding that is similar in size to the stops you removed. Apply some window glazing to the exterior stops. Insert a glass panel in the opening and gently press it into the glazing compound. Hold the glass in place with those little metal glass holders( forget the name). Local hardware store should have them. Cut the molding and carefully tack it in place. Clean off the excess compound from the exterior. Paint the exterior stops and just cover the glass about a 1/16- 1/8" to seal it from water. Ron...See Morebeveled glass entry door inserts
Comments (2)If your door has glass in it now, you can put in replacement glass yourself. The insert is held in with molding attached with screws. Here's a how to I found. We considered doing something similar, but our door is already half glass. I found insulated replacement leaded glass inserts at the big box store but it was fairly pricey (about the same cost as a new door) so we decided to make a wood grille instead. I found a blog where someone had a full glass insert put into their whole wood door for under $100. I'm thinking the $100 was just labor and they didn't divulge the cost of the glass. When I called a glass shop, just replacing it with the same clear insulated glass we have now was over $150 for the cost of the glass without installation. I don't have a habitat store or a salvage store near me and didn't check any surplus stores....See MoreFront door glass insert
Comments (1)It will probably be difficult as most of the Steel Door companies from 10,15 or 20 yrs ago are gone, either out of business or purchased by larger companies. As such plus the fact that pretty much every company used different size glass you may be out of luck, without cutting a larger hole in your existing door. Not to be a barer of bad news but you will run into the same issue with the frame as none of the companies frames are interchangeable for the same reasons....See MoreLooking for glass insert for oval fron door
Comments (12)It appears that the existing door is a hodgepodge...cobbled together by either you or a previous owner. In other words, someone took a plain slab door, cut an oval hole in it, placed a “fancy” glass insert into the oval hole and added a giant kick plate, all in an attempt to create a grand entrance. Frankly, I think you should replace the entire door....See Moremillworkman
