We just built our first raised bed and SFG!
Comments (4)I think you are right about the strawberries, with their runners, they would take over. I'd love to do a single 4x4 box devoted to strawberries though. Here's what I've planted: Tomato Onion Basil Nasturtium Tomato Carrot Parsley Basil Tomato Onion Basil Carrot Tomato Marigold Beet Basil Bean Beet Spinach Marigold Bean Carrot Beet Spinach Bean Spinach Spinach Carrot Bean Carrot Beet Mesclun Cucumber Brussel sprout Onion Mesclun Cucumber Mesclun Carrot BeetGrn Cucumber BeetGrn Onion Mesclun Cucumber Brussel sprout Carrot Nasturtium...See MoreJust built new raised box bed, questions?
Comments (33)a few thoughts to add to this excellect discussion. Does no one add sand? I've heard pros & cons. Also when you bury manure deeper than 8 inches it naturally mixes in with the soil well even if it's fresh. different animals produce manure with differnt nutrients. fowl from turkey and chicken farms and processing plants are super high in nitrogen but will grown giant greens and broccoli or burn up everything. You can get horse manure from stables and people who keep horses. Sheep and cow stuff from dairies and slaughter houses. Check with 4-H they can tell you who is raising animals and would love to get rid of all kinds of poop. I get great leaf mold in the fall when people leave bags of leaves on curbs in plastic bags. the leaves age just fine left alone in the bags all winter long. I've had difficulty with large amounts of pete moss in that it blows around quickly. If you can get neighbors un treated lawn clippings they are very good with some extra nitrogen....See MoreDitching the bed skirt -- how to 'prettify' box spring?
Comments (12)These are all wonderful ideas, thank you!! Mitchdesj, thanks so much for your ideas. Although I do own a sewing machine and have done a couple of projects in the past (made DH's wedding vest, and made a bunch of curtains), life isn't going to allow me the relative luxury of a sewing project right now. So I will have to go with more immediate solutions. We are sleeping in our guest room on a futon right now, so finding a "right now" solution that we can have in place when we load all the furniture back in is a must!! Les, the colors you suggested are definite contenders. I might like that sage a whole lot ... can't wait to get home and check the quilt to see how that might work! You know, it had never, ever occurred to me to find a way to reuse our current bedskirt as a boxspring cover. Honestly, I have no idea if the color would work, so that gives me something else I can go home and check. Johnatemp, your bedroom is beautiful -- thank you for sharing your idea and your picture. Cameron, thank you for the link. It's great to have this kind of head start on my "research". I do love knowing there are companies out there who make exactly what I need. :-) Again, everyone, thanks for coming through with the great advice and ideas. There's a reason I come here with these kinds of questions! Alice...See MoreNew Raised Beds Vegetable Plants are Dying and/or Yellow Please Help!
Comments (7)The tree trimmings appeared to be very well composted. The consistency was very nice but the 90' temperature of the material would lead me to believe gardengal48 that you could be correct and it was a nitrogen shortage. Idaho_Gardener I would like to read more about the short and long chain acids so please post a link. Honestly you are speaking about my knowledge at this point. He did add some fertilizer and has seen an improvement. He kept a sample of unfertilized soil to get tested. Gumby all plants were purchased or started from seeds planted in the garden. It wasn't a transplant or hardening off issue. He is an experienced gardener and some of the plants from the same source grew in his traditional in-ground row garden just fine. Toxcrusadr- He recently added some fertilizer Wayne- These beds are 18" tall on flat ground. They drain well and drowning isn't an issue. The beds are in a spot had has gardened for years. They really aren't wood chips but instead compost made and sold by a company that operates a tree trimming service. They also sell topsoil and a garden mix. There were no discernible wood pieces or parts in this compost. It was very dark and crumbly like all other composts I've made or purchased. Magic Bean Compost Product Description I will find out exactly what he fertilized with and post and update. I haven't see the plants since he applied the fertilizer but he did tell me everything is doing much better. Thanks for the help...See Moremclarke
