You would need to plan any improvements with an eye toward providing countermeasures to the particularly unusual imbalances of the exterior design elements. These are probably causing you to recognize some issues with "curb appeal", beyond adding some landscaping. Are there any modifications to the building itself that can be considered or permitted, and if so, to what extent?
Otherwise your answer would be to add as many plantings to the blank areas as possible.

A few questions before others pick up the ball - as for "curb appeal"; is additional landscaping something for you or primarily to appeal to passersby? The picture in the thread is pretty small and enlarging it gave me an entire screen of the upstairs window.

Where are you, what's your zone? How much lawn/space do you have and what are your plans for using it - additional hardscaping like paths, patios, walls; need play areas, fencing, gardens? How big is your budget? How much maintenance are you willing to do; are you DIYers or would you best be served by a landscape designer creating and implementing a plan for you? Do you like trees, shrubs, conifers, perennial flower beds, more formal plantings or cottage gardens? Rather than foundation plantings would you consider a stand alone deciduous specimen tree in the lawn to eventually provide shade and break up the bulk of the house? Would an island bed with a grouping of conifers, or conifers and a flowering ornamental (crabapple, plum, cherry, etc.) be of interest? Is immediate important or would you plant with an eye to the future? Is there a view from the inside looking out that you'd like to frame?

Sorry, but I occasionally lurk on the Landscape Design forum and have caught on to the kind of input those folks seem to like before making attempts to help.

Which side of the house is considered the 'curb' side? Are you on a lake?

Can you move the lights above the garages to the sides instead? Could you put one of those fake vents above the garage or something to pull the eye upward and to pull the garages together?

I'm no landscaper and I don't have PS. I don't understand much of the first posters response either :-)

How about a few large pots of flowers? A flagpole or tall pine? Maybe a few flowering crabs?

I agree with the previous suggestion of moving the lights to the sides of the garage doors. Also consider painting the garage doors to blend in with the house- they are really standing out with the white color, and the focus is on them instead of the front door, which looks dark right now. White (or another color) could be used there to help it stand out and look welcoming. I would also consider moving your urn to the front porch with some annuals- again, more welcoming, and the welcoming feel will be at the door instead of the garage.

The beds around the house are extremely narrow. Make sure that you get shrubs that are small at maturity. It almost looks like you have hollies there now- they get quite large, though take to pruning well. Maybe even a groundcover with some height would be best- don't know your zone or sun exposure, but liriope can grow in any sun conditions and looks like it would cover your foundation. Maybe mix in some daylilies. Repeat that groundcover at the right corner so that it's cohesive. You could visit a local garden center for advice. Also, there's some lawn to the left of the photo- if that's yours, you could think about planting there.

I really like the overall look of your house. Some simple plantings and simple changes would do a lot.

nalcar-I wouldn't mind doing that in the future, but really am clueless as to what to add to make it look better...maybe some kind of gable roof?

duluthinbloomz4 - Sounds like you know alot about landscaping! I have no idea what the zone is, but the home is in North Carolina. I don't have a green thumb so shrubs & flowers that are easy maintence are definately better! The driveway takes up all of the front & there is a small yard in front of the garage. The area by the entry way is what I am really looking to improve. Thanks!

whenicit- Thank you for your suggestions! We are on the lake & most homes here have better views from the lake but I would really like to bring alittle more of that to the front of the house.

Thanks cat tail! The bed in the front IS very narrow & with the entry steps coming out into it, I'm kinda lost what to do here. Does liriope keep it's leaves in cold weather? I will have to search that. Thanks!

Here's a photo of liriope. It would do well in your zone, and is customarily used to edge walkways, driveways or planting beds. It's a periannual that keeps it's color year round.

A pretty planter on the front stoop with bright colored annuals would be pretty. Since it looks as though your front door area stays shaded, you might think about something like impatiens for color, along with some draping ivy.

Sorry, don't know anything about plants, but I think that your idea to add a gable would look great. Here is one less costly example, just adding a quasi-pediment and with additional elements to balance the area under the window by the door. An additional ornament could fix the large expanse of space over the garages. Others' suggestions to move the lights down where they could do some good were spot-on. You have a very nice looking lakeside house, IMHO.

nalcar- That is beautiful! Something like that was exactly what I was looking for! The entry part of this home just needed something but I wasn't sure quite what could be done with it. Thank you so much for photoshopping that for me!! I can't wait to show DH...he had his heart set on this home because of the location on the lake & I agreed if he would change the exterior entry of the home.

You're so very welcome. Your mentioning the gable gave me enough to go on, and I think it really wouldn't take much to make your home look like you want. Any time you have an idea you want to see, just ask.
