Klinger inspired Seashell light shade

Ok, since I hijacked Cindy's thread, I am starting a new one. but Klinger can hijack mine if she wants to. Here she is. I sill want to add a pix of it later in evening. I used tacky glue with sand in between the shells after my disaster with liquid leading. Then I added more gold and crystal beads in between some of the shells I could not get the

sand to stayput. MIght be hard to see. I also added some different shells because several of them were too sticky with the leading. what a mess.

Thanks SLow for telling me about the putty, but I still would love to try the Buceras way.

Hi, Sarah.. I am coming into this thread late in the game but I did read through all the posts. I wanted to share a couple of thoughts and experiences but I am short on time so I will apologize in advance if I sound short or harsh. I have a red dining room and I have grown to hate it. My wood is a medium to dark oak and I think it does nothing for it. I think it will do much less for your darker and more formal wood. My sister just did her dining room in a blue (leaning towards teal) and it looks smashing with her dark wood. I am the LAST person to choose blue.. it's just not one of "my colors" but I have to say I think it works very well in your room. I tend to green and I still prefer the blue mockups over the greens. You keep referring to this as the "formal dining room" but the southern living elements you are wanting to decorate around are much more casual to me. I think you need to stop and take a breath and think about whether you want a formal dining room as your furniture suggests or a casual family style dining room like your bowl suggests. If you want the formal dining room then I'd use the tuscan bowl and the other southern living pieces in the kitchen. Whether the dishes in the china cab are valuable monetarily or or personally, they are on display for a reason, I'd presume? Are they family heirlooms? I would never suggest that you store them away-- if for no other reason, because they work much better with your furniture and with the gorgeous shutters. I strongly recommend that you look at pictures in the gallery and review the ones shared in this post with similar furniture and see if you can find a style that is cohesive and approaches what you see in your minds eye. I don't mean this disrespectfully (because I have been there myself) but you are going in the direction of a real mish mash of styles and your furniture is such a strong element in the room I don't think it's a room that will gracefully accept the eclectic look. I agree with all others on the shutters-- love them! They look beautiful as they are.

WOWOWOW!! I love that big blue ball! (Does it fill up with water when it rains?) That is SOOO cool. And thanks so much for sharing tips on how you did it. I just went to an art exhibition of garden sculptures. I'll link my blog below where I posted photos if you want to check it out. Unfortunately, the battery on my camera died before I got to a lot of it (including much of the concrete and mosaic work they had GRRRR). But my point is--short story long--the artists offered each piece for sale so each had a price tag. Do you know what you could sell that blue ball for in the bay area???? I'm talking 4 figures. I can't say that you're getting good advice on the sink issue until you answer another question or two...do you have a "real" master bath with two sinks? And did you cap off the plumbing but leave it accessable in your daughters bath? If you answered yes to both, leave the long counter. You don't have to plan for a family that does not live in your home and two sinks in a one person bathroom is rediculous (I've had it...it's awful). IF you capped off you can advertise it's ready for two sinks when you sell if you want, but don't cut a hole without knowing if it's necessary. If you don't have a real master bath you've probably made a mistake giving it to your daughter and you should plan on making a real one when you move...but again, why do it now? It's an easy fix later. Someone mentioned whispy or gauzie for the window. IMO it's absolutely necessary. If you put in a bamboo shade you've added some texture but it's still a hard texture and your bath is far too high on hard textures and way way low on soft textures and the beach is all about softness. White for your towels and mats...keep it easy and soft (again because it's missing) go fluffy on those mats...fun and fluffy. I wish I had a pic but in my condo appt I went with a color very near your color and loved it. One thing I did to soften the big mirror was to use a bunch of picture frames on the mirror painted in a shabby chic type of white. (does that make sense?) They were all cheap picture frames, but mostly bulky frames, with the pics removed and then I velcroed (double stick velcro in white) the frames to the mirror, with a big one over the sink and the balance scattered around. You'd be amazed how the harsh lines of the wall mirror disapear in the debth of the framed pieces. I am with most in that I don't like the lights, but their placement isn't the issue, it's the harshness of the fixtures themselves...but that's an easy fix if you soften up the rest of the room with texture. Fluffy white mats, towels, white frames on the mirror, a soft breezy gauzy window covering (which could be done over a grass cloth shade if you want more privacy) and some lovely counter accessories (candles and sand, grasses etc) would really make the room sing, and fix all of your issues (IMO) I'd consider doing the gauzy covering by tacking the gauze to a whispy piece of thin beach wood for the curtain rod, and then hot glue sea shells or sand dollars or star fish every five or six inches as if they were holding up the gauze... A collection of antique perfume spritzers would be a lovely accessory to bridge your tween into teen.

Thanks everyone!! This forum is great! I stopped at a store that sells BM today and picked up these swatches and keep going back and forth. Now I'll analyze them again and again in the light tomorrow!! I will post pic once i decide. I never expected this to be so hard! Do you think the color will go ok with my bedding okay? Yes, debelli, the light does play on the colors a lot in these pics. That's what's making this so difficult. I like the colors how they look in both pics so i don't want to get it wrong. I think the second pic of the foyer looks like it might be close.

Calamity, I thought your's was cool too, specially since you said you kinda threw it together. Wish my kinda's turned out half that good.. I liked the soupy grout idea.

Thanks all you mosaic goddesses, I'm glad you like it, I'm happy with it too, specially after I screwed it so royally with the leading mess. DH mentioned maybe we should do all of our light fixtures in the house, so I guess that means he likes it. LOL

Ooooo, Ahhhhhh....that is sooo pretty!! Sounds like you got a lot of learning experience out of it, too, LOL! Good for you for sticking with it and getting it just right. I'm afraid I have a tendency to throw in the towel if something gets too hard and I get too frustrated!

Geesh! Mermaid castle!! LOL I love that name, been trying to come up with a name for my mosaic room, maybe I will just name it Mermaid Castle. Funny. I already renamed our pool area Mermaid Cove and plan to make up a couple signs.

Slow, I'm actually making over a clay pot to a yellow brick road for Sir Wiggle to sit on. Thought it was fitting for the Alice in Wonderland rabbit!! Oh my.. I just mixed up my fairy tales and only just figured it out as I am typing. ROFL

Well, it's my story, and I'm allowed to make it whatever I want.. Half way done, need to post a pix. and making up lots of clay word tiles for various upcoming projects.

Yes, I have been bitten by the mosaic everything that doesn't move bug!!!!

Hi, I am interested in doing something along these lines & would like to know the basic process you used to make your shell lamp progect.

I am expecially interested in how you attached the shells to the frame with out impacting the look. Also what this you use for the frame work?

oh my gosh CharO, it's been awhile since I finished , so hope I remember correctly. I believe I used alenes tacky glue to attach the shells, arranging them as I went around. I originally put liquid leading all around the shells trying for the stained glass look a few of us were trying, but that was a disaster, so I had to scrape that off and take off most of the shells. PITA. I started over just using glue, shells, adding pearls and throwing sand in between.

it was fairly simple, the lamp was a cheapo from Lowes i think cost less than $20 and very plain glass shade, and it worked perfect for this.

I did discover lately when I glue shells to my hurricane lamps that mastic works wonderfully on shells that are hollow so you can then glue them to a base. You can buy mastic at almost any home improvement store in the tile area. You might want to try that..

Trying to catch up on reading, and glad to see this thread again. BETTYC: I bought a large punched tin sconce in PV, and I'm going to have it wired so the cord hangs down to a plug - that is if I can find a spot in this crowded house to hang it. If the cord bothers you, you could always cover it w/those covers, paint it the same as your wall, or in my case, I might even make it appear as a hanging cord, and cover it w/some kind of funky decorations. I suppose there are all kinds of things we could use to make the cord blend in.
