A lot depends on your sleeping patterns. Down (as any other pillow) usually comes in three different levels offirmness/fullness. I am a stomach sleeper so I go for the least firm/full. Side and back sleepers need more.

I bought a down pillow from IKEA for around $15 (it was on sale) and honestly I was hoping it would compress a little, but so far it has not. I have had it 6 months and it is just as fat as ever. I bought a fat one thinking it would compress. I may have to take some of the stuffing out of it!! What a comfortable pillow though!!

I can't help with a recommendation for a down pillow (I use memory foam), but I can tell you that since you bought it from Land's End, you can either get your money back or get a new one (assuming they still sell the product).

I bought a pair of leather slippers from Land's End, and in less than one year, one of them got a hole through the sole. I called them, sent the shoes back, and they sent a new pair, which have been fine for many years. Sometimes you just get a lemon I guess.

So just give them a call. They're very nice about returns, and you may even be able to take the pillow to Sears to return it rather than shipping it.

parma, I'm a back sleeper or side sleeper (sleeping on my tummy makes my back really hurt in the morning--yours doesn't?)...maybe that's it.

uxorial, you know, I was thinking about getting memory foam instead--do you sleep on your back or side? And which memory foam pillow do you have/would you recommend? Re the return--maybe if I screw my courage to the sticking point...it has been two years, although I looked at the catalog copy just today and it said "will give you many years" of comfort/sleep, whatever, but the point was "many years". Two is not many :).

DH is also a side sleeper and had to give up his beloved down pillow for something firmer. Now he wakes up with no aches. I've always been a stomach sleeper with no ill effects at all.

If you still want down, get it with the most fill as possible.

parma, I wonder if that might be it. The pillow I got says it's for side and back sleepers, but maybe I should just go with something firmer anyway. Too firm and I'll get a headache, though--I'm like the princess and the pea :)

They will either send you a new one of the same pillow or they will refund your money. No questions asked. Guaranteed. Period. Just like they say. They keep your order history for 3 years, so they will still have a record of what you paid for it.

RE the memory foam pillows, I've gone through three of them so far, over the past five years or so. The first one I got at Target (it was a "8" shaped one). It lost its memory after a short time and I couldn't use it any more. I didn't really like the shape of it; I had to put another regular pillow under it to make it high enough.

So I replaced that one with another memory foam pillow, but shaped like a regular pillow. (I still had to use another pillow under it, though.) I don't remember where I got that one, but the brand is Sleep Innovations. I probably got it at Fred Meyer or Target.

That one also failed me after a while. I recently got a new pillow at IKEA, and it' fine so far. They have many to choose from; I think the one I bought was about $15.

The problem I have is that my ears are shaped weird, and regular pillows push on the hard curved part of my ear and make it hurt. I need either a very squishy pillow or a very soft foam one. I just wish I could find a plain old foam pillow from the 1970s. There are none to be found; they're all memory foam now.

BTW, I mostly sleep on my side, but if my shoulder (or ear!) starts to hurt, I'll sleep on my back for a while. Basically, I just flop around like a fish all night. :)

I bought mine from Fairy Down. Have had it for 8 years and still as nice as new. Also bought their down spread which has held up through many washings as has theh pillow. They are located in NZ and I bought these while visiting there. But they now have a US website.

I have a friend, had neck problems/headaches etc. went through pillow after pillow all prices, after I got our new Q sz. solid, (not core filled) (not curved) memory foam pillows, which we both dearly love! she decided to give them a try, she ordered two hubby got one also, they take a week for some people to get used to, but after that, she has told me she'd never give it up, she even takes it along on vacations to relatives,I would not want to try to pry it away from her, no more neck pains or headaches after all these years of suffering.

thanks, emagineer...I'll look them up too. Anything from New Zealand has a leg up on the competition, as far as I'm concerned :) -- I'd love to live there one day and my favorite songwriter comes from there, so they obviously produce superior goods of all kinds :)

susieq, I am really thinking I need to lookg into a memory foam pillow (IKEA again! or where did you get yours?) before I spring for a down. Thanks for posting your (and your friend's) experience. I'm vicariously thrilled for her!

Well, uxorial, we found ourselves at Ikea this very weekend, and both DH and I got memory foam pillows--he got the unformed and I got the soft formed one.

We *love* them so far. And for the price, if they need replacing every year, not a problem.

I have down pillows from Pacific Coast Feather Company. They are hyper cleaned as I have allergies, and I've never had a problem. They've been on my bed since 1997 and still are as comfy as the day I bought them. I'm a stomach/side sleeper and these are 100% down, but I do use two of them.

They sell that brand in Costco, but I bought mine from QVC under their name Northern Nights.

It's pricey but the best pillow I've found that prevents morning headaches and stiff neck muscles is the tempurpedic.

If you're a side sleeper, the cutout allows room for your shoulder. It's so comfy.......I love the way the pillow wraps around the top of the shoulder!

Fly, We both should have moved there 10 years ago when the dollar was insanely low. The last time I visited was 5 years ago and a lot of imagration had occurred buying farms and businesses. It is the most beautiful country to visit and I love the people there.

This is OT, but McDonalds puts beets on their Big Macs in NZ and I loved them. Also, one of the hotels I stayed in was right across from the Cadbury factory. Talk about wafting aromas to die for. Cadbury chocolate is 100% better there than what we know of here with the use of pure cream and butter. They also have chocolate chips for cookies which I have not found anywhere else, even on the net.
