Okay, so I probably misspelled that last word, I have no clue. But I just wanted to alert you all to a wonderful after dinner drink called Black Sambuca. I had it last fall at an Italian restaurant in the Chelsea section of NYC with my sister and brother-in-law and it was so unforgettable! I bought a bottle today and am enjoying a small bit (it's a real butt-kicker) of Romana Black. Tastes like liquid black licorice! Now I have to figure out a recipe to use it in.

Sambuca is an age old classic Itallian liqueur. Romana is the best quality brand you will find around most retail. Other annisette based liquerurs are Ouzo (Greece) and Pernod (France)

You asked about recipes..........Sambuca is sometimes put into cannoli filling. Use the white not the black - unless you don't mind grey filling!

You can also make Italian ice cream cake rolls and soak the cake with it.

I had it in Tiramisu once but did not care for the combination personally.

Sambuca is also used in pizzelle.

Sambuca is traditionally served with three coffee beans in the glass. Some people have coffee and cream, with the Sambuca added into it.

I had a fish dish once in a restaurant that had Sambuca in the glaze but I did not care for it. Sometimes chefs get too "carried away" when they try to be inovative and creative.

Any recipe you have that calls for peppermint can use annisette (Sambuca) as a substitute.

Yah, I've known about Sambuca, it's the Black Sambuca that was a revelation to me. That's the flavor I really like. I'm just not aware of any good pairing for a black licorice flavor like that.

I've included a link below to a fantastic article on container soils and how water moves through them. The article also has recipes for free draining mediums you can mix yourself. I think the 511 medium would be perfect for a half barrel. It would be worth your while to begin again, drilling the necessary holes, placing some mesh over them, and using a more durable, free draining soil that will hold up well and give your plants' roots better aeration along with excellent drainage. It really helps when you know what the purpose of soil is, and what plants actually require... and Al's article in the link covers it all. It dispels some old wive's tales, gives excellent and very pertinent information, and if there's anything you don't understand about the concept of a more durable, fast draining medium, please feel free to ask us! We're all here to help! :-) I use the recipe for Gritty Mix in all my long term plantings, which would be my house plants, and I'm going to use the 511 medium for some large patio pots I have outside. Some will contain annuals, and others will hold my Japanese Maples and other trees, or roses. Either way, the larger pots get wheeled back inside the unheated garage at season's end. I'm waiting on pins and needles, too, for the nicer weather of spring to stay with us a while! I'd like nothing better than to get all the plant material out of the garage! Happy Gardening! The last one we have has a daphne in it - we got that daphne 23 years ago when we got married - all of the sources I looked at said that daphnes were very short lived - Ha! (tricked by paying attention to generic sources AGAIN!) The daphne has gotten big, and is going strong. This winter the barrel finally collapsed on one side, the plant sank over sideways a bit, but is still going strong months later - I think it must have rooted into the ground a long time ago. It is sort of hidden behind a Duchesse de Brabant, and so I just avert my eyes when I go by it, although I do look at the foliage to make sure it is still doing OK. Sometimes I just like to wait and see what happens - I am not a neat & tidy gardener at all. That's why I like old roses! Jackie

"Jim, when you say rum cherries, do you mean pin cherries?" I have come to realize that I have not correctly identified the wild cherries. I know them by the appearance of the trees but haven't attached the correct names in some cases. There are three, possibly four, which are familiar to me. Black cherry (Prunus serotina) is a large tree from the forests of Pennsylvania from which we get cherry lumber, a very attractive wood for making furniture. Pin cherry (Prunus pensylvanica) is a small tree. That is the one which is so abundant around here and from which I have harvested cherries for cherry bounce. I just checked near my house and found that birds have largely beaten me to the harvest. Choke cherry (Prunus virginiana) is a large shrub. The fruit can be very astringent, although it varies from one plant to another. So far as I can tell, all wild cherries are useful for making cherry bounce. The fruits of all are about 1/4" diameter and have more pit than flesh. Some are just more easily harvested than others. It would be difficult to pick black cherries from 70 foot tall trees in the forest. Picking from pin cherry trees can be done without a ladder if you aren't too short. I'm still a bit uncertain about the taxonomy, but this is the best I can do right now. Jim

I'm all for supporting BevMo, which used to be Beverages & More, was run into the ground by dumb buyers, then repurchased by the original founders when it was almost comatose. They brought it back to life and have done a good job. I went there to buy Scotch for my handyman when I wanted to give him a bonus. Just went in and said, "Who knows the most about Scotch here?" and sure enough, was guided to a terrific Scotch my guy had never tried and absolutely loved. However, if I need something really special I go to a local store in San Francisco which is renowned for having the best of everything, and if they don't have it they can get it. A friend and I tried the Pappy Van Winkle 20-yr old Bourbon in a restaurant and this store was the one I immediately thought of to buy a bottle - and sure enough, they had it and could ship one to my friend (and one to me, LOL). Stupendous stuff, a real after-dinner sipper. Don't know if you're into port and madeira? My favs are the Dow 30 yr Old Tawny Port and I was just introduced to the 15 year-old Verdelho Madeira from Henrique & Henrique's at a local Portugese-Brazilian restaurant. Much better than the super-sweet Malmsey Madeiras you find in most places; this was more like a dry sherry crossed with a tawny port. Really luscious!

Most quality liquor companies have recipe booklets you can get if you write to them.

Sambuca Romana has a website with recipes.

This is thread has been around a few weeks, but I'd love it if it got revived.

But first I have to admit that, before composing my thoughts to post a reply, I got up and poured myself a glass of Sambuca! On a late Saturday afternoon! All by myself! HavenÂt had one in months, but your post inspired me.

I guess you can tell I'm a huge fan of Sambuca. I also love the French version, Anisette, most particularly Marie Brizard. I love them with espresso, either alongside the cup or poured right in it! Years ago at Italian restaurants, particularly in the Bronx, when you ordered your espresso and Sambuca, you got more than those LITTLE ITTY BITTY espresso cups Â you were brought an entire POT of espresso (called a macchinetta, itÂs a stovetop espresso maker). And if there were enough of you at the table ordering Sambuca or Anisette, they LEFT THE ENTIRE BOTTLE AT THE TABLE! Ah, but that was long ago and in another timeÂ

I love all kinds of liqueurs, and now and then we'll sip one (or two) after dinner. My DH likes to zip up his French toast with Frangelica or Grand Marnier instead of vanilla. We like to add a bit of Chambourd (raspberry flavor) to hot sake Â m-m-m-m! I remember having Pisa Nut Â an almond flavored liqueur from Italy but canÂt find it in stores. And who doesnÂt love a bit of BaileyÂs once in a while?

We had this in a sushi place on Maui. I think they called it Purple Haze. I'm a long time fan of coffee and 'buca.
