newbie wants wine advice (please)

I am not a wine expert so am not sure what I am looking for - hope someone here can help.

I like to drink dry wines. Prefer Shiraz or a Merlot.

My husband has started drinking wine but likes it sweet. I am convinced of the health benefits of drinking red wine and I am wondering if there is a sweet red wine out there. I would like to find one that we can both drink.

I think that Chianti is a sweet wine but if I remember correctly it is REALLY sweet - don't think I can stomach that. Any one have any suggestions?

Chianti is very dry.
If he really wants a sweet wine, I would try any of the Kosher concord grape wines.....they are very sweet!
Port is also another sweet wine, ruby port is a lovely shade of red and quite sweet.....and very delicious!
But if he is looking for just a little sweet, how about a beaujolaise?

red zinfidel. not sweet, but try to wean your husband to a drier red but less intense than a merlot...gee, it sounds like i know what i am talking about..no, only what i LIKE.

Try a red zin or a pinot. Good reds, but not sweet. He may just not be ready for INTENSE reds like you like.

Then, you slip in a shiraz...then a nice cab and before long he is drinking the merlot you bought for youself..you sure you want THAT?

Altho' peonies grow to the size of shrubs every year, they aren't classified as such. Can you name the shrub in the photo above? Depending on what the botanical name might be, you may get more helpful suggestions about whether or not to trim it down. There are shrubs that benefit from being pruned every year whereas others are best left to their own devices. In the absence of a positive I.D., it's probably a good idea to leave it for a season to allow you to observe its behavior/bloom time/flower color. Good for you that the bed is now curved rather than linear. You many find that "ditching" the bed works better than lining the edges with stones but you'll decide what works best for you. The formal beds are ditched in nearly every botanical/public garden I've either visited or seen pictures of which is why I adapted my own garden beds to that method. Sorry I don't have a recent photo to give you a visual. As I mentioned above, I consulted my neighbor prior to ditching the beds and he reiterated that it was much easier to mow around them if they were ditched. I can tell you from experience that weeds/grass will grow up between your river rocks and you'll be hard pressed to kill them without using chemicals or vinegar. You'll find your own garden priorities but I recommend you consider this: perennial gardening isn't a goal with a finite end date. Rather, it's a journey. There are plenty of detours along the way.

I have Happy Returns and it's very nice. I don't know the other 2. I agree with spacing 18" apart and in a triangle - one at the back and 2 in the front or vice versa. Also, put an inch or 2 of mulch on the soil. I would water them more than twice a week if it is really hot weather until their roots are established. Good luck!

I am not sure what you are asking. Do you want to know which Heuchera/Heucherella would work for your lighting situation? I love Hostas also but for interest and to add color and showcase the Hostas I am using the Heuchera mostly on the boarder because that area gets more sun. I have some pretty deep shade and the Hercs do not seem to do good with that much shade. This is a pic of a deep shade area. It is hostas, Heuchera, ferns, and Bunnera Jack Frost. The yellow flower is a pot of a Calla Lily that I set out every year. I like it even before it blooms because it has beautiful large white spotted leaves. The hosta leaves cover the pot and it looks like it is planted in the garden.

Red, sparkly, and slightly sweet is the description of the French wine "Vin du Bugey Cerdon". The version by Renardat-Fache is my favorite. An astonishingly delicious wine with the taste of bubbly strawberries, cherries, and berries, it is wonderful and inexpensive for a wine of this quality. It is also relatively low alcohol (about 8%). Just do an internet search on google and you'll find lots of retailers to send you some. Enjoy! Jim

If you want to introduce him to hardier reds - maybe start with a late harvest. The grapes are left on the vine longer and produce more sugar. These red wines will be labeled "late harvest"!

Maybe try port. Some late harvests Zins have residual sugar that appeal to sweeter palettes. Most of the cheaper style Cabs they are now marketing are extreame fruit forward styles that make it easier for a newbie to become accostomed to. (Big Red, Ray's Station, 3 Moose, 3 Theives)

I don't claim to be an expert (though I have been making my own beer and wine for 20+ years) and the wine experts/connoisseurs are probably going to cringe at this suggestion. My husband and I prefer dry wines too. However, our lovely daughter detests dry wines (she's more of a Boon's farm drinker). Since we usually have close to 200 bottles of wine on hand at our home, I'm not about to go out and buy a cheap sweet wine when she comes home for a visit. The solution to the problem is simple.........she pours herself a glass of whatever we have open and then sweetens it to suit her taste with sugar. We have a lot of friends who prefer sweet wines and I have shared our daughter's little secret with them. They have all tried it and rave about the improved taste of the wine. While the connoisseurs will turn up their noses at this suggestion, it does work. It's just like iced tea.....some like it plain, some like it slightly sweetened and some like it extra sweet.

I being a winemaker for over 20 yr, I also agree with bettylou, but I would suggest corn syrup over the sugar.
Many wineries use this product to sweeten the wine.
