Beginner Wine Book

Hi all,

My son is about to turn 21 and has asked for a book on wines for his birthday. Any great recommendations on books that would be good for a beginner?

You've got to love a kid who decides against an iPod in favor of learning about wine!

When my family found out my intrest in wine I was given "Guide to Wine" by fiona sims
Pretty good book, basic knowledge of all regions.

Not exactly a coffee table book but very informative. Then add in a gorgeous wine book with a hard cover and beautiful photography like "The World's Greatest Wine Estates : A Modern Perspective" by Robert M. Parker.

You could also give him a subscription to "Wine Spectator."

I guess this is an old-ish thread, but with the holidays approaching its still relevant. As a beginner myself, I've checked out a decent number of bonsai books in the past year. Despite many recommendations here and elsewhere, I found "The Complete book of Bonsai by Harry Tomlunson" to be so basic as to be almost useless. You can find similar info all over the internet by reading any introductory material on bonsai. At least for me, it was way too basic and high level to be of much use. I did however have the fortune to be gifted a copy of Deborah Koreshoff's out of print Bonsai book, which I find invaluable and amazing. Quite accessible to a beginner, and I think it will be many years before I am at the point where I need more depth than is in this book. It's probably expensive to buy, but well worth it. I can't figure out why its no longer in print, given the high quality of the content. I also had a chance to browse a friends copy of John Naka's Bonsai Techniques I, which I found very technical and difficult to relate to at my current skill level. I'm sure its a great book, but I decided its not for me, at least not now or anytime soon. Daniel

Best Rose Book for beginners

Rose viewing is right here in the gallery forum there much better truer pics than a glossy expensive book can offer and alot of people have great skills in getting real nice picks I tend to think some of em are pros but I know it is a passion of sharing they posses Zone rose growing is a very good idea but you can read up Chances are there posting there zone like you did Types of roses Well there are many from climbers HTS to ground covers oldfasions ect ect ect sometimes you can read a lil bit on the general rose forum for a better discription but youll catch on from a HT to a climber in no time I found organic rose growing to be a very good place to post about pest and problems a webb site from a rather humorus guy named Bob he,ll tell you lots too he has 1000's of em too including pics it is very informative from whos who to where to pest site prep how to buy ect ect ect it's not a nice glossy book but for a beginner I reccomend it highly after a while you can buy the book if you want but by far the pics here show a rose as it realy is... if you find a rose you want but still want to see it dont hessitate to ask for a pic or two of it someone proberly has it Roses and everything about em copy save and read away he has 1000's of good pics too Bobs humor and visit us often http://www.rose-roses.com/index.html

My MOSAIC BIBLE: 300+ Mosaic Tips, Techniques, Templates and Trade Secrets by Bonnie Fitzgerald I checked out this book at my local library, and immediately knew that this was a fantastic (everything you ever wanted to know about... ) book on Mosaics, so I ordered a copy from the Internet. Before I even start a mosaic project now, I review the information about surfaces, adhesives, indoor vs. outdoor, grouts... . Several years ago, I visited my son in Northern Virginia. And, knowing that Bonnie Fitzgerald was from this area, I contacted her via email before my trip. She was teaching a Children's Mosaic Class, and invited me to stop by. What a wonderful experience; she is a very personable & talented mosaic artist. It was cool seeing the talent and excitement of the children, too, and talking with them about their mosaic projects! Can you recommend good orchid books for beginners?

This question comes up a lot! The two most commonly suggested books are Ortho's All about Orchids and the Sunset publisher's book on Orchids. Several forum members, including me, are also quite fond of Orchids Simplified by Henry Jaworski. FLAME 747 suggested "An Introduction to Orchids" published by the South Florida Orchid Society. Other excellent sources include: Taylor's "All About Orchids" (great pictures); Rebecca Northen's "Home Orchid Growing" Orchid Growing Basics (Schoser) Gardener's Guide to Growing Orchids (Ritterhausen) Orchid Growing for Wimps (Zachos) Jack Kramer's "Orchid Growing Indoors" In addition, Mary Noble has several good books for beginners: You can Grow Orchids, You Can Grow Cattleya Orchids, and You Can Grow Phalaenopsis Orchids." All are excellent for the beginner. If you want to know more about species, then The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Orchids, edited by Alec Pridgeon is also a good source. For a more detailed listing, and a suggested reading list for more experienced growers (intermediate level and advanced), check out Linda's Orchid Page at She has many good suggestions.

ccj berry or the Joy of home wine making by terry Gary(I think thats it.)Or from Vines to wines which is a big book I heard is a good book, but If you do not mind searching the computer for him you can find some good info. on vinting. I have a free wine 21 chapters 170(9) somthing pages from Online, but please understand as soon as I post it It will not show that is just my luck with the computer anyways.-------- I have to go now , but you could come even if you have a book, and I will try to post the link after I copy it on to papper.

Thanks for the suggestions. Barnmom, the Wine for Dummies looks like it is just what I am looking for. I'm off to the bookstore tonight. (We have a lovely little independent bookstore in our town and I have become fanatical about supporting them because it's such a lovely store.)

I've decided to do the book, a small wine rack and a couple of bottles to get him started. Then we will go to dinner at the little restaurant owned by the Frenchman, and I will have Frank introduce him to a couple of nice French wines.
