Patio French Doors Replacement Advice

I wasn't sure where to post this as there are no forums dedicated to "doors" and I did find some threads discussing doors on the "windows" forum.

The double doors are used frequently as the exterior entry is the kitchen. They are rusted and rotting as is the surrounding wood frame (at the bottom) and are 13 years old. I live in Houston, TX.

The doors seem to be wood covered in aluminum (painted white inside and out)and I don't know the make but they came with this Village Builder patio home when we bought it new.

I've done searches on the internet but nothing I found addresses the humid south.

It seems a fiberglass door would be the best for our situation/frequent use of the doors. What kind of cost can I expect including installation?

I'm not sure if I should get estimates from replacement "window" companies locally or someone specializing in exterior doors?

I really need help as my husband will just wait until the doors fall off (one of the bottom hinges has completely come away from the wall with the screws sticking out when one opens the door).

I work for a distributor, I cant give you a real good idea on price, but your best bet is either a quality fiberglass door painted with exterior latex paint or an all vinyl hinged patio door which most better vinyl window manufactures make and many sell with high grade multi-point locks. Do your research on anything before you buy it, and also look at an installers work before you hire him. The price really depends on options, but they're close to the same in price.

For rogers windows.... Dude I'm sending someone your way for and Andersen FWH6068APLR. Hope you are good for your word.

+1 I would start with who even makes the doors and narrow the list from there. I would expand the door opening as well depending on the work required to do so. A 4' French door is petty worthless by todays standards. Post up a picture of the current interior and exterior of the door.

We installed an Anderson sliding french doors two years ago. Love it! It was expensive but worh every penny! If we had the room to do true french doors that swing open we would have done that. Don't give it a second thought! They really upgraded the look of our home and set the tone for our kitchen remodel and updated our whole first floor. The Anderson door glides well, feels solid and looks beautiful.

If the job is planned out in advance, it should take about one day to remove the door and hardware, frame and install the new door and trim. Painting would take an appropriate amount of time to allow drying between coats. If drywalling is needed on the inside, that would also take some additional time. If you want custom windows or other accent to make up the difference in width between the garage door and the french doors, that would also take more time.

You are welcome. I'd use WoW if they were here (same area) for my own house LOL. Anyway, the sliding door is under-serviced no doubt. And it's been replaced a few times as well in the last 20 years. Basically, there is something going on where a lot of debris and water get into the track. I think the exposure directly to the outside and a lot of yard debris (leaves, dirt from the ditch that blows up in windy weather, etc). And that starts the downward decline. Perhaps the last install was bad. But we really want to do away with a slider completely this time and simply avoid having to keep cleaning the track and servicing it. Even with a new sliding door, the shoulder surgeries have left their arms weak and I think it's best to avoid that type of door going forward

I am not a window expert but I have recently replaced 4 French patio doors. I am in Fla and replaced mine with impact glass door. First I think I had your patio doors and they are not aluminum but they are steel that is why they rotted and rusted. They are junky contractor grade and only have a small life span. I am only going to recommend a material because I replaced mine with a product sold by Lowes called West Palm Series doors they are made by Yale Oegron and sold by Lowes. I will not recommend these doors to you. I have had so many problems with these doors, don't even get me started. It has taken years and I now have one falling off the hinges! Yikes the screws just backed out. So I recommend the Aluminum frame it will hold up just get a great door. Everyone down here speaks of PGT I don't know if they are available in your area. I just ordered and I am installing a PGT single hung window and I will have to say it is a quality product.
