Just Curious to Know How Many People............

really enjoy going to a wedding, do most people feel obligated. When it is a family member that is one thing but lots of people get invited when they hardly even know the couple.

Same goes for "showers", people not only have to buy a wedding gift but also a shower gift. Everything is so expensive these days, by the time you buy new clothes for the wedding, maybe pay for a hotel, buy wedding gifts, shower gifts, you have to mortgage your house.

Generally speaking, I'll decline the invitation if I don't know the couple well. Of course there are weddings I go to where I don't really know either the bride or groom, but my husband knows one of them well.

I'm also the sort of person who doesn't feel the need to buy a new outfit to go to a wedding, though it is a fantastic excuse if I'm just looking for a reason to buy something new for myself. And my first consideration when buying any gift is my budget, then I start thinking about the recipient.

every shower I go to, I'm glad to go to. Even at the expense of buying two gifts. I've gotten better at declining shower invites.

Some weddings I've gone to, I wish I didn't have to. I know the bride and groom, but the wedding isn't going to be that fun--or doesn't turn out to be that fun.

In my case it's the large extended family that I hardly know, and I sit around making small talk w/ these ultra conventional people--perfectly nice, but really boring conversation. And the music nowadays isn't that enjoyable. Dancing to techno-pop just seems like work.

however, I also know, in the two weddings I'm thinking of, I have great, great affection of the bride and groom. It's not their fault that the family is so big and so boring. And everybody *else* loved the music. My being there was a way to convey my regard.

There are other weddings (and sometimes showers I don't attend but do send a gift to) where family politics distates that I attend. They're cousins, and though I don't consider them close, their parents would be insulted if we didn't show up.

I like power equipment, but don't use a mower due to grass allergies. I use a tractor, mostly to move dirt, manure, and mulch for gardens, and a heavy duty weed whizzer that has a couple of blades as well as a string trimmer. In general I do smaller yard and garden jobs with hand tools since I like the quiet of my rural area and would rather listen to birds than have to wear ear protection.

I second that it depends on the plant and the person. My Dad has been gardening much longer than I, although this is his first year winter sowing (thanks to one chatty mommy who likes to quilt). He likes everything to be neat and orderly and calculated. Everything is strategically placed so nothing is out crowded and he would never just chuck an entire packet of seeds into a milk jug. I'm a little less fussy. I put a whole packet of seeds in a milk jug and split up half a packet between two 2-liter soda bottles. If the seeds are really small I might sprinkle the whole packet into a soda bottle anyway...or if they are really big I might split the pack in half between two milk jugs...or if there aren't very many seeds in the pack then it doesn't matter which I use I dump it all in...catching on? ;) I don't mess with thinning either unless a seedling is looking really sickly. I actually love the look of a dense patch of plants all sort of fighting up to reach the sun. If they start to look yucky you can always go back and thin later or dig it up and start new.

Mary_c, thank you for the article with the facts. The real story is nothing like what the OP posted. The article clearly says, "They [she and husband] left the service in 2005 when their enlistments were up." So this is not a case of being asked to "finish the four years" of enlistment as the OP wrote in the post. She is IRR. A person IRR can apply for a waiver. Some are granted but not all are. I do think that it is asking a lot to expect former troops to remain ready for the rest of their lives and not ever get on with their life. This fact is downplayed by recruiters and some recruiters even lie to applicants about what the real obligation is when you sign and take the oath, so it may not be clear to many who join. I am wondering who signed to take care of the children when they were active duty? Where are they now?

I once worked as a refrigeration technician in a large hospital and we wore uniforms on the job. We reported to work in civilian clothes and had to done a uniform before entering the shop. Whenever we had to make a service call we had to done a long blue lab coat and immediately upon returning to the shop we had to remove the coat and put it in the laundry and if we happened to spill something or get dirt on our uniforms we had to change out immediately. At the end of the day we had to shower and put all our work clothes in the laundry then we dressed out in our civvies to go home. They had a large garment rack in the shop with a minimum of 4 sets of uniforms and 6 lab coats at all times. There was a laborer from the laundry that came to the shop 3 or four times a day to get our laundry or return clean uniforms and coats. In some areas of the hospital they had small table top refrigerators at the nurses station where they would temporarily hold suspected contagious cultures until they could be transported to the lab. In some instances once the culture was put in the little refrigerator it was locked and the entire refrigerator was carried to the lab. If the lab determined it was in fact a contagious culture, they would seal the entire refrigerator in a plastic bag and send it down to the refrigeration shop where we performed an extensive decontamination proceedure, and once we completed that we had to immediately shower and put on a clean uniform. Oh yes, and the uniform and lab coat we took off had to go in a special bag that went to a decontamination procedure at the laundry.

I do only go to the weddings that I want to. DH is very involved with young professionals, and is invited to many weddings. I generally shop for the department shower gift, and add a small something that is more personal to that. As for the weddings, I do enjoy them. I have attended everything from cake and punch receptions to the full blown 60K bash. I guess we are lucky that he works with people we like!

I must add, the year the "sunshine club" decided to assign seats at the Christmas dinner wasn't fun. I got up and moved to an overflow table where a very nice couple was sent, because the woman making the seating charts had "forgotten" them! The people at the company -- well, some are great, others are not so much -- we had barely said hello, when three other couples joined me saying "no one should feel excluded at a company event!"

I hate showers, even my own! I'm just not into the whole getting together with the girls and playing stupid games thing. I'd rather just have a nice night out with ALL my friends and no gifts. Now that almost everyone I know is married, it's been nice to not have to do those things. But I guess that means soon it will be baby showers, which are worse. Groups of girls playing stupid games talking about giving birth- UGH!

I attend weddings that I want to attend. But as for people I barely know, I have no problem sending my regrets and then a nice card. Friends' weddings have been really fun lately, and most are not doing traditional showers, thankfully.
