Do people give you mosaic things?

I've felt I was fortunate because people keep giving me things. When I first started this my next door neighbors Dad who didn't do stained glass brought me over about 5 boxes of assorted glass, I still have some of it. Last week when I went to work one of the guys had saved a lighted sign from work that was going to get thrown away on my day off. I know have a light box!!The guys at work bring me broken dishes, styrafoam , lot's of stuff. When Jane and I went out last week, the first place we went to the lady said she had saved three bowling balls for her, the next place another lady had a box of dishes in her trunk for her. It's so cool how people are so generous, gotta love it. I try and pass it on by giving people stuff I've made, and Janie is also very generous with her projects. What have you had given to you, and what kind of stuff have you passed on?

Just the one lady at work gave me some dishes and those broken cups. I think I'll make a frame from them for her.

Heck I wish people would remember that I'll take anything broken but they just throw it away instead.You're lucky!

Violetta, This might not have anything to do with your MJC, but it is something to consider. I've noticed in the past, when emptying out pots at the end of the season that some of the pots seemed water logged at the bottom. It wasn't until I read the following about water movement in soils that I understood why. "There is, in every pot, what is called a "perched water table" (PWT). This is water that occupies a layer of soil that is always saturated & will not drain at the bottom of the pot. It can evaporate or be used by the plant, but physical forces will not allow it to drain." Maybe MJC's roots are into this layer already and can't get enough oxygen. Agree also about God's will. Plenty happens that is NOT His will---because WE have the free will to do as we please. It is the discernment of His will that is the difficult part... trying to figure out which path or action would best serve that will.... and those are usually found by following the commandments, the golden rule, etc. By acting in accordance with those tenets we have a better chance of placing our actions in God's will than by doing whatever we damn well please, regardless of the consequences. I know many people think religion useless, but I am a pragmatist and think quite the opposite. If a person is truly trying to live in accordance to God's will, by looking carefully at his or her actions in the light of the commandments and the example lived by Jesus (or Buddha, or other revered prophets), that process makes the person a better citizen and improves our society.

I was so excited about Doone's tip, I forgot what I wanted to add to the subject...LOL I struggle with this too. And I know that the value of items can change dramatically over the years...what is worth nothing today is worth lots tomorrow. So I ask myself these questions...if it's a common item and readily available, costs less than $5 (more or less), then it's fair game. If I have any doubts at all, I don't usually use it. But then again, I've seen antique mosaics worth tons of money....I figure it has something to do with the objects used in the mosaic as well as it's condition and age.

I save all plastic bags and give them to my sister to crochet mats for the homeless. She can use any that's he can cut loops out of including toilet paper ones if you open the ends instead of tearing down the side. I takes 5 or 600 bags to make one mat. she can also use dry cleaning bags, .like I said it would be any cylindrical bags. The mats are 6 ft long and 2 1/2 feet wide and have a carrying handle and loops to hold them together when they carry them. I save bread bags. I use those for all kinds of things. I guess o got that from my DM. I have just started using worn out socks for rags. My DH goes through socks fast. I use single slippers for on my Swiffer. I saved the bottom part of my old litter box and cleaned it up really good and use that for soaking clothes in OXy CLean. I also save twisty ties. I have some of those nut jars too. Mine had fruit in them at the restaurants I cooked at. Here is the big one. I save almost all of the glass jars that I get. I use them for canning. If they have the rubber inside of the lid they work. I like the small ones, so if I want to give something to somebody They don't have to return the jar. I always make pickled beets and give some away. I boil the lids just like I would Kerr or Ball lids and fill the jars and screw them on tight. I had one jar that wouldn't work once because the lid wouldn't tighten. It just kept turning. I just made sure I used that one first. then I threw it away. I also put other things in them

My mother-in-law (who doesn't even like me much!) got me a set of French doors for glass on glass work through freecycle!

My neighbors bring me broken plates and a very special friend/neighbor brings me "creepy-heads" to mosaic my bowling ball with faces.

I'm thrilled with what they bring and haven't had to pass on any of it yet!

My stained glass store owner collects those M&M figures (the plain and the peanut M&M's doing silly things together). I took one into him and he gave me about 6 pounds of bullseye glass for free!

Barter is a good thing (and in that case I was actually just trying to get rid of one more thing collecting dust!)!

I get a lot of tile scraps from floor jobs from various people. I had a stained glass artist give me 2 five gallon buckets of small scraps and 5 boxes of scraps 12" and smaller. All kinds of glass in there for me to sort(still sorting). She was moving and it was easier for her to give it away than move it cross country.

My class gets broken tile donations from tile stores also broken dishes from the thrift store that is in the same complex as the school is.

I am baaad, I go so often (I call it doing the circuit!) to all my ts haunts, that they all know and save me stuff now! I got a little tmbler(kids size) that way so I really like having the two tumblers!!! That reminds me, gotta go get those bbs!!!.....

I was going to say no, not so far..and then yesterday I got a call from a friend who has a set of dishes in the trunk of her car. she had them for her daughter and somewhere, along the ride home, she hit a speed bump, fairly fast...
so, she called me and asked if I wanted some broken dishes..lol

Very cool,gosh pea, you sure got some great stuff. Calamity gets stuff all the time, makes me drool. lol.

Nope, I haven't been so lucky yet, but I am working on it. I was standing in line next to a guy who ended up telling me he installs tile for a living. I walked out the door with his phone number and a promise that he would save scraps for me. I'm crossing my fingers that he will!

Now people like to give me things that are already mosaic...store bought stuff. baaah...to get some broken dishes or stuff like that would be so GREAT.
